So what is it you love about the server you are on?

So during the 8 hour drive to my hometown for the holiday's I had time to think about the MMO games I have played and how the same game can sometimes be a very different experience depending on what server you choose when you start your character. Having said that tell us all about your favorite game server experience and your worst one.

RE: So what is it you love about the server you are on?

Ok I'm biased... I'd have to say it makes a BIG difference having my guild on the Butcherblock server where I play. I just can't bring myself to play anywhere else. I tried creating a toon on Oasis one time but it just was not as much fun. Butcherblock may not be the busiest server... almost everyone promotes Antonia Bayle... but we have a really great community on Butcherblock.

...The only time I picked a server other than where I knew someone was when I played UO. I played on Baja a little but did not enjoy it near as much as when I played on Napa Valley where most of the people I knew were playing.

Well...in EQ2 I love the thrill of PvP. This is probably my favorite game for PvP (which is amazing because I really don't care for it normally). Of course being in an RP guild makes it even better.

The only other game I had a server attachment to, was UO. Napa Valley. Was not my first choice, but I was convinced to move there and then I couldn't leave. The community was just wonderful.

In any game I play, I think it's the community that you have with other characters that really makes a person want to stay.

RE: So what is it you love about the server you are on?

Of all the games I have played the one with the most server attachment would have to be Shadowbane and the Vengeance server. In EQ2 early on I tried several servers just to get a feel for things and then settled on Highkeep and really like it. As seems to be my luck in these games Highkeep was merged with Butcherblock which I still feel has a slightly older more experiecned player base that matches our playstyle better than some of the other server. It is very interesting how the same game can seem so different just based on the player base of a particular server even though it is the same game with the exception being special use servers like PVP vs PVE or roleplay servers.

That puts me in mind of an article I read about a year and a half ago. It was about a study that showed/argued that the name of a server has an influence on what kind of people pick it to play. More aggressive names tend to attract more aggressive players and such. Pretty obvious if you think about it.

In vanguard the old Flamehammer or Gulgrethor servers had a much rougher crowd for its playerbase than say Hilsbury or Florendyl (RP server), which is why I'll never understand the choices made at the server merger there. It seems they opted to create a mix of "roughnecks" and "carebears" on each server or something. In the end this just caused lots of conflict, more sub-cancellations and lots of server-transfers.

Anyway, the article showed several researched WOW servers and a clear trend could be seen. Regardless of PVP/PvE/RPG rulesets. I tried to find it but no luck so far, I'll try again later today.

MMORPG (PvP): Macho Men Obviously Really Prefer Griefing
MMORPG (itemization): Misers May Obfuscate Recently Purchased Gold
MMORPG (Social): Virtual Worlds with Virtual Wealth and achievements, but with Real People with Real Feelings.
