This didn't happen recently though.
I decided to buy WoW. So. I purchased it and brought it home. When i loaded it up and installed it. It asked for a Number key or w/e you call them. I used it and it said it was already in use. So i brought it back to the shop, and they wouldn't return it cause i already opened it.
I got quite annoyed. That's what turned me off WoW. Luckily cause if it had of worked. I wouldn't of had Guild wars. Big waste of 80 bucks or however much it cost back then.
...So, What turned you off WoW. If you don't like it?

when i bought WoW, i forgot to buy the monthly thingy in the shop. so i installed it, and it wouldn't work. so the next day i bought that monthly card or something. it worked and all, but the game was sooooooooooo boring, nothing to do. the pvp wasn't cool (at a low lvl) so i stopped after reaching lvl 30
and got back on GW :D
that's when i said; thank god i have Guild Wars ^^

I bought WoW a long time ago and played for quite a bit. But once I got to see how repetitive it was, I had to force myself to play out of boredom. I stopped playing when I hit level 41 with my Tauren warrior. And the pvp...no balance whatsoever...it almost entirely depends on your gear (unless you're up against someone that really sucks).
Of course, initially I had fun, but after going out and killing *insert mob* a number of times, or picking up *insert item* several times, or a combination of the two...I had to ask myself, "how the hell is this supposed to be fun?". And that's when I quit. :P
I mean, I'm not saying it's a bad game (obviously, with millions of players), but it's just not the game for me.

What turned me off: cartoony, lack of quest direction arrow and the jumping.
-Cartoony: It looks so fake that its not believable. GW is at least a little believable.
-Lack of quest direction arrow: I don't know where these NPCs are, how the heck can you find them? Just explore until you happen upon them? Screw that!
-Jumping: Real men don't jump over obsticles, they map around them.

To the OP: Sure you were trying to create an account in your own region? My brother tried to make an account an failed, then I found out that he was on the American site while we live in Europe.

It's more realistic (altho the cartoony look screws the realistic thing at once :P) you actually need to read your quest log and there it says where you need to go. In Guild Wars, you can finish everything without reading anything, which isnt really RPG-like. Consider the fact that in most games you dont have an arrow pointing the way for you.
I like GW really much, but I didnt know what to do anymore so this week I started WoW and so far I still like it... I heard some stories of ppl tho that they stopped playing when reaching lv30-40 but so far I'm still enjoying it. WoW really gives you the feeling that you are in a vast world, which GW fails at.

I'm going a bith off-topic with this, but... why didn't you just contact Blizzard or Tech Support for WoW?
With enough proof (key + box, ect., ...) they'd probably make sure you got the account and screwed the person who used a keygen.

Yes because people shooting fireballs and raising minions from the dead in guild wars is believable :S and happens in everyday life.

i think the only thing that turned me off WoW was a monthly price, sry not a fan of paying for something after i bought it.
I mean after a year of paying 15 dollars a month its 180 bucks plus the money u spented on the game
and alot of WoW players like to say that u pay for cable every month and u pay for insurance every month, but i have to say i think cable is not a game and has more than one "channel" and as for insurance i think that explains itself

if i may i'll throw in my 2cents worth.
i first played guild wars but went to wow purely because my friends were playing it. i started enjoying it, got used to it and when i hit level 70 it was like getting your diploma.
heres the problem. as most have mentioned its a very repetitive game. every quest is almost carbon copied. im more for pve than pvp and so far in gw i have not been bored yet of the pve.
wow is all about gear. no matter how spasticated your character is under the shell what you wear is what makes or breaks you, which, in my opinion goes against traditional rpg layouts. what i like in gw is that you have to stat your character. and you get to do so the way YOU want to. wow has very little to do with customization unless you get the odd enchant or gem slot upgrade/available to the armor/weapon.
gw definately has it in the graphics department. 2 hardcore wow friends of mine have both said without hesitation the graphics are far superior. not only that but that gw itself has so much diversity with character development with the various professions and how you stat ur character that it can be seemingly endless. i have found when i played wow you can almost spot what level some of the players are simply by the gear that is available around that period of time they are at that level.
gw is kinda like the doctor who tardis. its not whats on the outside that defines you but what you do with it on the inside, and so far, to answer the said question, what turned me off wow, was that it was boring as batshit.
end of statement:p

Narr.... i brought it home and it said the key code was already been used. So after they wouldn't take it back. i just thought, Stuff this.

Don't forget about paying for not being able to play, for instance, WoW not working, or getting kicked off/ disconnected for an unknown duration. I agree with you 100%. I guess there were private servers or something that one could make a character and whatnot, but my significant other kept getting kicked off by the owner of the server and he told me I should get on a private server cuz it doesnt have a s-u-b-s-c-r-i-p-t-i-o-n (had to get away from the enion or whatever that blasted curse is)

3 things....
Too cartoonish
Monthly fee
Endless, mindless grinding

Because they fail to realise that this is a Guild Wars community, while the World of Warcraft community is a few doors down the hall on the right, just past the water cooler?

However, to get there you will have to grind yourself out to about lvl 30. LOL!!!

Ok time for me to throw in my 2 cents.
I played GW for 2 years, and now I see the PvE as the dullest thing in the world. I was forcing myself to play each day. So I tried the 10 day trial, which ran out today, and I think the game is fun. GW and WoW cannot be compared as they are 2 different games made 2 different ways. But here is my attempt to compare.
Traveling: Though in GW you open the world map you open it and go anywhere you want, WoW requires you to find other ways to get there as the only instant teleport i saw was a Hearthstone which only took you to 1 town once an hour. In WoW you can take flying creatures to certain towns which costs a miniscule amount of money. You can also take boats or zeppelins to get across the world.
World: The GW world honestly is boring and uneventful. Nothing happens in the towns, and the explorables are all pre-set instances. In WoW things change and instances are only experienced as dungeons. Like in the server I was on the town "Crossroads" gets raided daily by alliance ppl (who are real btw) and you see ppl zealously come to protect it. In GW the closest thing to this is Kurzick/Luxon changing town control. In WoW you discover new areas endlessly because the world is so huge.
Storyline: In WoW i havnt even experienced a story yet, mostly it has been "Kill this, collect this" kind of quest. So GW definetly has more diverse quests and storylines.
Pets: This is what makes me love WoW. Pets in GW are hardly even just bodies anymore since you cant make minions from them. This is just my personal love for animals, but I LOVE WoW animals. You can choose from a bunch of different kind, you can have more than one, and they dont take 30 days to switch targets. They also learn skills and each speces has special skills and stats that make them useful for different things.
PvP: I love GW pvp. It has been the only thing i do since pve is so grindfully boring. I like how certain combinations of skills and classes just flow together to make a perfect team or build. I have not experienced PvP in WoW yet, which i am desperately waiting to do.
Skills: In GW the skills either prevent, cause, or mitigate damage. No other uses. In WoW you get all kind of skills. Like one skill lets me see through the pet's eyes and control the pet. Another lets me scan up to 50,000 yards away to survey what is going on. The skills interact more with the game and not just killing.
Professions: GW doesnt have professions, WoW does. These cannot be compared. By professions i mean skinning and fishing and such. Again this is more interaction with the world that GW lacks.
Graphics: To anyone who says the graphics are too cartoony, each game is made its own way. Cartoony graphics dont effect how i play a game because WoW makes up for it with expansive, beautiful environments. Sure GW Graphics are realistic and nice, but switching to WoW (for me! not speaking for anyone else) hasnt been that hard.
So there is my comparison. I have played both and liked both but i cannot playt GW anymore until GW2 comes out because the PvE serves no more purpose. So me, I play WoW for my reason. My reason is that I need a new game until GW2 Comes out.
GW2 FTW!!!!
also i forgot to mention WoW isnt as bad as ppl make it out to be. Half the ppl wo bash WoW in GW havnt tried it yet. So Please, please please please...dont pass judgement until you have tried it.
