Uhm, supposedly EQ2 has the best anti-gold sell spam SOE has to offer. In fact it's their system now being migrated/integrated in all SOE games....
But it's not just SOE. You'll find the same problem in NCSoft or Blizzard games. I've come to accept that since MMORPGs are part of life, and SPAM is part of life, you'll have SPAM in MMORPGS. Mind you, SOE is the only Publisher I know of that allows trial-accounts to send tells and trade, which is not helping.
I still get the occasional tell and at least one e-mail per session in City of Heroes/Villains too. Nothing like in Vanguard Saga of Heroes though, where you'd average one per minute on 'bad' hours.
MMORPG (Roleplaying): Mostly Men Online Role-Playing Girls
MMORPG (Acheivement): Miserable Malcontents Online Rehashing Past Glories
MMORPG (PvP): Macho Men Obviously Really Prefer Griefing
MMORPG (itemization): Misers May Obfuscate Recently Purchased Gold
MMORPG (Social): Virtual Worlds with Virtual Wealth and achievements, but with Real People with Real Feelings.

Hrm maybe SOE should disable the important functions of a trial account so that this can be cut down alot?

You'd be surprised at how many times that suggestion has been offered. For some reason SOE keeps failing to do just that. They do succeed at repeatedly hiring people away from IGE, the main gold seller in the world. Maybe that's SOE's strategy.

Let's face it, no game is ever going to get rid of gold sellers completely and as far as I have seen SOE is doing a lot to minimize the impact on players.
Way back in March 2007 they put Restrictions on Buddy Keys similar to those they have on Trial Accounts. Read about that on their news article Changes to Buddy Key Accounts.
They also put in Server Side Spam Filters in July.
Plus, if you get mail that is spam you just have to click the Report button. Now how easy is that! :-)

For several months after the spam filters were added many of us enjoyed only seeing the purple notification that a spam tell had been sent but text could only be viewed if it was clicked on. Now I only see the occasional gold spam from V I C sale .com and it is usually after I pass one of their bots. I report the spam right away and the bot is usually gone in about 20 minutes. The bots are fairly easy to spot as they will be a low level toon with a weird name that is just parked by the mailbox.
I did not know SOE had hired any folks from IGE here in North America; interest bit of info in that tid bit.

Here's Lum the Mad's reasonably neutral article on it. I probably should say relatively neutral:
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/v...-Hires-IGE-Exec
It didn't get as much heat as could be expected as soon after whole Sony slaughters a Goat and shows titties thing happened.

Sometimes I wonder why people bother to bad-mouth Sony&SOE.
