Stan XX, my inv/ss tank just reached lvl 40 last weekend after three years (I need to learn to focus). He's been a wonderful toon and extremely survivable. Then I experience the carnies with him for the first time. Holy cow! I'm watching my health and endurance steadily drop. I was actually hesitant to run in and footstomp everything because I keep getting taken out.
Any recommendations or am I just screwed?
Thanks,
Randy

Invulnerability has a HUGE hole in it's resistance to...you guessed it...Psionic damage. Carnies are the DEVIL!
In my opinion, your best bet is to avoid the carnies at all costs. I don't think you can get enough set bonuses to really make a difference.
I had a similar issue with my Fire Tank. For the 40-50 levels I mostly joined big teams and did missions that included a lot of smash/lethal damage. The Praetorian arcs aren't a bad idea, there's some psi damage, but not a whole lot.
Scanner missions with Council are lovely. :)

Yep. Stay clear of the carnies, they are the worse villain type for tankers.
Not only do they do nasty amounts of psi damage, their mistresses turn invunerable, send out loads of phantasms and clones that deal more psi damage but when they die they drain a bit of endurance from the people in the area.
Your endurance goes and any toggles you had on drop and you loose any protection you may of had. Death for tankers.
If your forced to face the little buggers then concentrate on enemies your better prepared for. Namely the strongmen, assistants and the fire breathing ones. Let the rest of your team deal with the mistresses.

Actually, Illusionists, Master Illusionists, and possibly the Ring Mistresses are the only Carnies that use Psi damage. Illusionists are easily taken care of if you run in and KO blow them (make sure they aren't phased!). KO Blow has a guaranteed Mag 3 hold, meaning it will hold any minion or LT who doesn't have hold resistance. Illusionists do not have hold resistance, so they'll be held. Make sure the team knows to take them out first, and you *should* be fine.
Master Illusionists give everyone headaches. They summon 3 extra Illusionists. Blind had no positional setting, so even /SR scrappers have a hard time dealing with them. They can stack enough holds on you to break integration and other *weaker* mezz shields. The key to taking them down is to have a strong team with buffs and debuffs to strengthen your protection. Heals directly counter incoming damage, so use them if you have them. If you are solo, Lucks (Purple insps) provide 12.5% defense against *ALL* damage types. Two or three of those and you'll be very hard to hit with that psi damage. Also, Sturdies (Orange insps) provide 25% resistance to all damage, so two or three of those will also help greatly against Master Illusionists.
If you have partaken in any Rikti Zone Invasions, you may have, or be close to getting, the Elusive Mind power from the Watchman (Watchwoman) Accolade. This power lasts for 1 minute and has a 25 minute base recharge. I'm not sure of the actual resistance and defense numbers, but I do know it gives a significant amount of Resistance and Defense to Psi damage for its duration. If you have or get that power, it'll shore up the Psi hole in Invulnerability quite well, for a little while at least.
Beyond those options, remember that Dull Pain gives anywhere from 40-60% more HP to you, depending on how you have it slotted. Activate it before going into a fight against a Psi wielding foe, and you'll have that much more HP for them to have to cut through, giving you and/or your team time to take em out before they take you down.

I had the same problem with my Inv/SS-Tank as I first had to fight carnies and it never got any better.
I could mow through everthing, but a single Ring Mistress or Master Illusionist could take me down.
There are only 2 ways to deal with it.
1.Don't go into a carnie-mish alone.
A single teammate is enough.
2.Clear every minion around the Boss, then face her 1 on 1 and burn a lot of inspirations (purples are most important).
After I got the Elusive Mind Accolade it got a little bit better, but still they are pain in the a***
You can still try to avoid carnie mish.
Go to Firebase Zulu and do some mishs there.

I personally don't have much issue with Carnies, outside of end drain at 50. The psi damage from Bosses has been reduced from the IO bonuses I've got rolling, plus elusive mind. As most of you know, I solo....ALOT and the only time Carnies get close is when I get surprised with more than one boss at a time, and even then I hit Dull Pain and maybe a green or 2 and I'm good. If you want my info on how I've slotted everything gimme a shout in game @Deadman54.
P.S If anyone would like verification of this, ask Nas, I'm a Carnie killer....ok ok so she does most of the killing when we team, lol

On the plus about Carnies, they're vulnerable to Lethal Damage. So a true Carnie Killing Tank would be a Willpower/Axe or Willpower/DB. :)

In my book those guys do rank as one of the worst baddies to fight besides arachnos and malta. In recent months I think they somehow buffed up the carnies end drain to the point that they have become a massive threat for any melee char that goes toe to toe with em. Whenever one bites it, they do a end drain and weakens a char further thats usually already weak from the fight. Its crazy, it really is especailly for those of us who love the invul set.
However in my book, thats what friends are for. I hardly run around alone on the server anymore and I have sg mates that I maintain voicechat communication with on top of those on my global who have my back as much as I would have theirs if they needed my aid. I'm never too proud enough to call for a little kinetic help or call in an emp for a little endurance boost or fortitude to help me get through those tough missions. (ppl with kinetics or empathy would be your best friends against them)
So when I fight carnies, I prefer not to fight em by myself anymore if i can help it. If i have to, I go through em slowly. I use ranged pulling tactics to try and get them to come at me in as small groups as possible. It's slow work but it does get the job done and you'll come out of it with alot less debt.

Thanks for advice all. The carnies weren't so bad when I was playing my dark/dark scrapper so it was a pretty big shock to eat dirt so quick. I think I'll just avoid the carnies and check out a few other story lines that I haven't done yet.
