New Mage, No-so-often player...

I have a little experience with WoW from a few months back. Some of you may know me from the CoH side of Gameamp.

At any rate, I'm looking into a Mage. My experience with WoW, as I said, isn't much. Currently I've got a little Gnome named Glib who's considering Fire as the way to go. However I'm wondering what everyone's thoughts are on how that is for a newish player.

I've played a Paladin and a Rogue up to about the 20ish area, but I wanted to hop over to my nephew's realm (Frostmane, Alliance side) to have some company ingame.

Suggestions? I figure Dru would probably know pretty darned well, but I want to keep it open to everyone.

RE: New Mage, No-so-often player...

Mages are well... mages. They kill, kill and sometimes they die... easily. If you're into the caster thing, likes to have nice little tricks to avoid certain situations, likes to be the top dps in groups, likes to be accepted in most groups, likes to just sit back and dps the crap out of anything in sight, likes to sometimes be one shotted by melee players than the mage is for you. ^_^

LOL, I don't know how to describe the mage any better. But they are very fun to play with, fire is either kill or be killed. In PvE you are the preferred spec for damage, in PvP not so much anymore but still can survive, especially if you're a 3 minute mage (pompyro) that likes to 3 shot SOME mobs/players. But mages also have frost that in PvP is the best spec out of the three, they lack a little damage but make up with more survivability and being the best tree for solo, or arcane the utility tree and with good gear being able to rival fire in damage. Anyways wait for Dru she'll be able to help you more =P

Edit: I forgot to mention that mages are probably one of the cheapest class to play with, I mean that you don't really have to invest heavily in gear at early stages. And can make your own food/water and have ports being able to be in any part of the world in seconds. Before I forget, mages also got buffed with the new patch :)

Well, I'm on a PvP server, so I might be leaning towards the Frost tree. But we'll see what the Great And Powerful Dru says. ;)

Well it sounded in the first post that you are going to be leveling with someone, if that is true then I'm sure you will have no problems unless you get ganked by a much higher level. Frost for sure will help you out on surviving tho, but now with icy veins a lot of people are getting the icy veins, frostbite talents in the frost tree. It just does not help in survival but also ups the fire dps.

RE: New Mage, No-so-often player...

I actually picked up Icy Veins and it was good but I needed improved counter spell and improved dampen magic for arena so I got rid of it again. It is like PoM, nice every 3 minutes but you can live without it. Its a new fad I guess.

As for fire vs ice - everyone gets ice block now (@ level 30) so if you know how to use that well you should be okay. Ice barrier is nice if you think you will have problems with aggro. But if you are going to get ganked you will probably die because the person will be much higher than you so I wouldnt worry about speccing because of it.

Fire is PEW PEW Kill, ice is pew pew slow kite pew pew some more kill. arcane gives you mana regen and +spell power.

I would suggest getting improved arcane missiles they really are a must for any mage no matter fire or ice. Between fire and ice however I think its a personal choice in how you want to play, if you want to kite and slow and control your target then play ice. If you want to nuke em down and kill kill kill then go fire like meum said.

If you have any specific questions I will be mroe than happy to answer them and lots of the guys the have been around here a while can answer too they have mages and they have heard me answer them 100 times lol.

Also my guides have not been updated for a while but they generally hold true for mages, we have not been changed a whole lot since the begining of the game for the most part. We have generally stayed the same.

Dru

RE: New Mage, No-so-often player...

After considering it a bit, I think I'll play the "Meta Game" a little. There's a vast number of Ice based Mages considered pretty darned good in PvP. Therefore, people are going to do what they can to build against them. Fire is viable, thus certainly a possibility. But apparently, no one expects Arcane...so maybe I'll go that route.

Though I'm only level 9 right now. It's not too vital that I make that choice right yet.

(And thanks for the welcome back.)

By the way, someone mentioned leveling with someoen earlier. I probably WON'T be. He's level 69 ATM. :) However, he's my nephew and I buy him things, so hopefully he'll be a good kid and send me some gold. :)

RE: New Mage, No-so-often player...

Give everything a try and see what fits you most. Some people swear by pure fire, some a combo, etc, etc.

See whats suits you and what you find in the metagame. Trial and error.

You know mages can tank, right?

Well give him a 'Gratz on level 70' from gameamp. =] (When he does reach it ofcourse)

Anyways my mage is also arcane and I will say it is different from Fire/frost, its lots of fun. You get to use arcane missiles/explosion ALOT, its kewlz. =]

Have fun with your mage!

RE: New Mage, No-so-often player...

personally, i say go for the Troll Shaman/Orc Warlock/Undead Mage. FOR THE HORDE!!! haha, sorry, i had to throw that in somewhere.

but as far as base stats go, and for beginners, a Gnome Mage is probably your best bet. Casters are the most powerful in this game (sorry rogues and hunters) and Mages have a very straightforward task, they are really the only DPS class that goes THIS straight forward. Maybe the Rogue, but that's different.

Mages are probably good for beginners because they
-are easily accepted into groups
-do tremendous damage
-are generally self sufficient with conjured food/drink
-can teleport
-can farm well
-don't rely on gear much

and several others

Will have to disagree with you a bit on that. I've seen enhance shamans, BM/MM Hunters(most people forget to add in the Pet's damage), and my old assassination rogue top the charts over fire mages, and definately over any warlock.

There may be many variables, such as gear, skill, etc. But you can't legitimately claim Mages/Warlocks/ShadowPriests are the most powerful.

Well BM hunters are for PvP (really good too) in PvE they stay behind MM, but ya mages are not the greatest damage dealer by default. But played right and with decent gear they can be =P
