in desperate need of a new computer..

Ive done everything i can with this computer. Everything. I am now lead to believe its intentions are clear and that it slowly wants to commit to the first ever computer suicide.

Anyways. In light of these events ive convinced my parents to let me build my own computer. Now, i havent been keeping up with the latest in tech news, so im not sure whats best to what atm. My budget is between 500-700 dollars. I have all the peripherals, (keyboard, mmouse, speakers, monitor).I just need RAM, processor, motherboard, and video card. As im sure that my cd drive and my soundcard are not the cause of my computers state of wellbeing.
Any help would be immensly appreciated at this moment

RE: in desperate need of a new computer..

I can help you tommorow (that is, for europe) as im on my way to sleep now.
If you can, im not too familiar with American based PC Hardware websites, so if you can give me anything at all, i can look around.

Your budget is 500-700 right? Just Motherboard, Graphics Card, CPU & RAM? I think i can get you a very nice and future proof rig.

I'l look around for you tommorow then ^^

RE: in desperate need of a new computer..

Ok, you got a pretty nice setup, if your going purely for gaming, i might recommend sticking with Windows XP, Vista isn't that ''good'' for gaming, we've been through this and i posted it saying its childish to start a flame war.

Its a known fact Vista simply sucks off some Frames per Second, however, if your ever considering going for SLi (dual Graphic cards), Vista has more support for that. But if your really aiming for squeezing every little bit out of your PC, stick with XP for now, im not saying XP is more awesome, its just less demanding on a system so games work better.

Ok, heres what i dug up: (JUST Newegg)

Kingston HyperX 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Desktop Memory - Retail
$49.99

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820134583

Corsair and Kingston are neck to neck, theres no difference, except a price change, Kingston factories simply spit out more RAM so its cheaper, their equally the same, and mind you, the fancy RAM cooling does nothing, only if you'd get a fan on it the highest % boost known is 3.7, Not Worth It.

Newegg sells mobo's at high pries, your Choice is good.
$100

Your motherboard has Nforce, when it runs, see if you can install Ntune software, this program can run a system-optimize check which you can run for 20 minutes, 3 hours or 6 hours. During this time your system will most likely freeze and reboot, when Ntune is done, your system will be optimized in speed and with the best stability available. It will be right on the edge between stability, while yet sqeeuzing out everything it can get. It also can memorize the setup so you dont have to run it everytime.

Im going for your CPU choice.
$100

There's no real difference between AMD dual cores and Intel dual cores, only a price difference, currently AMD is cheaper, so thats what im choosing for. Me myself am using AMD and previously used Intel, so far i can browse up on the mighty innernetz, theres no big difference between the except price. Intel uses a few less watts, but so far i can go, you get your ''energy saving'' investment back perhaps after 3-4 years. Once again, not worth it in the big picture. Only if you go Video Editing Intel chips are worth it, but im presuming here your not a master moviemaker, and photoshopping is easily done with AMD aswell.

Ok, we're at $250 now says my Calculator, and we already have RAM, CPU and a Mobo, now we need is Graphics, Power supply and a Hard Drive.

XCLIO GOODPOWER 500W ATX 500W Power Supply 115/ 230
$49.99

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16817189005

Looking for a power supply can be very weird, you get barraged by incomprehensive tech-talk and mumbo jumbo, just pay attention to two things:

- Form Factor (ATX in this case)
- Wattage

500 Watts is MORE then enough, im quite sure your system at full load will maybe be at tops 450 watts, you got plenty enough, Brands dont mean much about it, just make sure you keep receipts always. (incase of power aswell, plug your computer on a surge-protected multi-plug, incase of lightning strikes, your entire system probably isn't roasted, just a tip)

We're at $300 now, im adding 10-20 extra cause im not too familiar with newegg and your listing prices i think are the delivery costs or something, anyways, we're at $320 now then.

Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST3500320AS 500GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive
$119.99

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16822148288

Hard Drives aren't the cheapest, and your choice was good, i went for Seagate because it has 32MB Cache instead of 8MB, this generally speeds up things alot faster, and your paying a bit more, but in return, you'll get more HDD performance aswell.
Seagate, Western Digital, their both very good companies, i prefer Western Digital myself, but Newegg doesn't seem to have a huge variety in Hard Drives.

Ok, at $440 now, all that's left, Graphics!(most expensive so far i see aswell.

XFX GeForce 8800 GT XXX Video Card - 256MB DDR3, PCI Express 2.0, SLI Ready, (Dual Link) Dual DVI, HDTV, Video Card
$230

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/se...1&sku=P450-8820

I went for this one because its cheaper, and 256MB's are fine for now, it costs alot more to get 512, although perhaps in this year a few games can come out that fill your card's texture space entirely, the price you save now is fine.

This puts us at a total of $670, i got one more deal for you which is optional if you don't mind a slightly bigger price.

FX PVT88PYDQ4 GeForce 8800GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card
$270

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814150259

This makes the total price according to my calculator,
$710, I chose for XFX and this card in particular cause you save a tenner on free games you get with it, you can also give $10 more and get those free games, thats entirely up to you.

The only difference between this card and the other one is that this one has 256 megabytes more texture space, making it more future proof, however, as i said, not many games that fill up 256 in the first place yet.

I choose XFX because generally its a company i like and hear good news about, the cards they provide are almost always already standard overclocked meaning if yours goes kawoosh because of it, you got warranty to get a replacement (doesnt happen often at all, just saying)

I think you got yourself a very nice system here, i browsed most on Newegg as you can see, you can also search for the same stuff on TigerDirect if you want, though prices probably compare in total if you order it at one site or the other.

Best of luck with your choice, but so far i can think your system is now complete!

Another place I go to get parts is TigerDirect. I got most of the stuff for my current PC there.

Erm, please, Read First, Post Later. You just made yourself a public laughing stock with what you said.

The 8800GT was already recommended, infact, twice, two different versions, how you managed to miss that is beyond me.

Second, Having Vista means nothing in future proof, Microsoft already stated that mainstream support for Windows XP lasts till 2014.
Link if you dont believe.

Yes, ofcourse Vista is the future, Etcetera Etcetera, next up is Windows Vienna, THATS the future. It goes on and on and on.
But for now, Vista simply sucks a lil more power from your computer then is needed when your aiming for Gaming, and dont bring me any load of bollocks about ''DirectX 10'', thats a downright Fail for now, every game i had had DX9 support, and the difference between DX 10 vs DX 9 is.. wow.. more shaders, just a wee bit more, just, not worth it for now.

Besides, he's already paying alot, he can pay for Vista a later time, for now, he can stick with XP.

No offense or harm intented.

RE: in desperate need of a new computer..

you plan on upgrading to SLI any time soon?

if not then you could probably save some bucks by getting a single slot PCI-ex mobo instead.

here's one with an nvidia nforce chipset:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813131042

and another with an AMD chipset:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813186136

what's the differents between AMD and nforce chipsets?, i honestly don't know (didn't really do any research on that) but the price on that AMD is attractive.

Seems like another person fell for Vista's clever marketing.
Also, are you using the same case from your old PC?

RE: in desperate need of a new computer..

Havent turned it off in 3 years? No, your joking, or am i misunderstanding, you let it run 24/7? 0_o

Anyways, i know how you feel, i upgraded since 2 months ago, before i had one of the lamest system specs known to mankind, i could game, and thats exactly where it stopped aswell.
I *could*, meaning yes, it ran most games, but you find higher framerates at your local Museum's paintings.

Well, if you need some good PC maintenance programs for your new rig, to keep it running like clockwork, just PM me.
Though i do think you probably already have all kinds of stuff doing their jobs like registry cleaners and so on.

Do report it when your new systems up and running!
