I need info...

Hello WoW side of amp! I've got many questions that need some answering, because wiki doesn't help out much...

I'm not new to wow but I'm still a newb. I played WoW on and off for 3 months and made many (I mean a lot) characters, most of them I leveled to their high 20s and low 30s, except my main hunter which is 40. I stopped playing since September and went back to GW. In the last few days, I got fed up with GW. So, here I am, back in WoW.

I've decided that I would make 2 new characters (caster and melee) that I would level all the way to 70, from the following classes: Mage, Warlock, Warrior, Paladin and Shaman.

For these classes I would like to know the following things:
(Please, I know it's a lot to ask, but could I get 2 answers per question? 1 for the casters and 1 for the melee)

1) How well do they solo?
2) How steep is the learning curve?
3) Which is more gear dependent?
4) What are the roles expected from these classes in a raid/dungeon?
5) Which attributes should I prioritize when choosing gear?

Another thing that I'd like to know is what the difference between a slow and a fast weapon is, apart from their speed. Why would someone equip a slower weapon over a faster one?

Also, coming from GW and playing mostly a warrior, I've grown accustomed to doing little to no self healing, depending mostly on monks to heal me. I'd like to know if the melee classes can heal themselves in a quick way while sustaining damage (such as using Lion's Comfort from GW).

Well, that's all I'd like to know for now.

I know it's a lot to ask in a single post, but any help will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks.

RE: I need info...

Well, since I'm currently levelling a Shaman, and none of the others, I'll try to answer your Shaman questions. Keep in mind that I'm currently playing an Enhance Shaman, which is basically a mix of caster and melee, more melee though.

1) How well do they solo?
-Enhance Shamans solo very well, they can take on 2-3 enemies their level, provided they aren't elite. (You can tell if an enemy is elite if they have a golden dragon around their picture icon.)

2) How steep is the learning curve?
-Not too steep, though it takes a bit to find the balance for managing your mana. Also, watching your healthbar is tough at first.

3) Which is more gear dependent?
-Melee classes are much more gear dependent than caster classes, mainly because caster classes have the means to kite and don't need to be in range.

4) What are the roles expected from these classes in a raid/dungeon?
-Shamans can be melee dps, caster dps, or healers. If they're Enhance, they can offtank. But the most desired trait of Shamans are their totems.

5) Which attributes should I prioritize when choosing gear?
-Caster Shamans and Healing Shamans depend on Intellect and Spirit. All classes should have stamina. Melee Shamans focus more on Strength and Agility.

Another thing that I'd like to know is what the difference between a slow and a fast weapon is, apart from their speed. Why would someone equip a slower weapon over a faster one?

-The slower the weapon, the bigger damage per hit. One thing to note is that the slower your weapon is, the more aggro you can cause. Hitting for 100 dmg once every 2 seconds will cause more threat than hitting 50 dmg every second.

-Overgeneralizing, but a 1.00 Sword will do the same damage as a 2.00 sword, it just takes more hits for the 1.00.

-But for Enhance Shamans, you generally want slower weapons. Why? The Weapon Spells. These are not the same as Ritualists in GW. The Weapon Spells are a 30 min duration spell that causes your weapon to have an additional effect. The slower the weapon, the higher damage you gain from Flametongue Weapon.

Also, coming from GW and playing mostly a warrior, I've grown accustomed to doing little to no self healing, depending mostly on monks to heal me. I'd like to know if the melee classes can heal themselves in a quick way while sustaining damage (such as using Lion's Comfort from GW).

-Enhance Shamans, Paladins, and Druids all have self heals powerful enough to use them as the Main Healer in a group. Warriors have a skill that converts rage into health. Rogues have no self healing. But if you use a Warrior, make sure you look into First Aid. It allows you to turn materials into bandages you can use to heal yourself after battle.

RE: I need info...

From what you've told me, Shamans are a swiss-knife type class. Thanks for all the information, it's greatly appreciated! I look forward to the rest of the classes.

No, it's not a lot to ask we're just as friendly as the people from GW, and we'll always help a friend in need ^_^

Ok, so to start off you're trying to decide on a few classes and my honest opinion is that you'll mostly likely have to find out for yourself. But we can try and help you out on making a decision. :)

1. How well do they solo?

Mages solo pretty easily, especially frost mages. But the catch is that it doesn't get easy until level 20 or so and the downtime can be a pain sometimes, but after that it's cake. (At least you get to make your own food and water)

Warlocks are probably the best class to solo with, after level 10 you will probably never have to drink or eat again unlike the mage, you get mana and life draining skills and an array of pets, from caster, dps and tank pets, whatever you need you will probably have it by your disposal.

Warriors can be tricky to solo, you depend heavily on gear so it can get costly at times, make sure to always have bandages , potions and food with you before venturing out and try to get the best weapon you can afford either by buying on AH or a drop from an instance. It gets easy on leveling once the warrior gets its level 40 talent which is either bloodlust (fury) or mortal strike (arms).

Paladins are easy to solo with, they can perform multiple roles, they can heal, dps and tank. They can be just as gear dependent as the warrior sometimes, but the paladin class is a little more forgiving on that. They make great characters to solo with and at higher levels they can pretty much solo anything.

Shaman is another class that it's easy to solo with, they are like a swiss army knife, they can heal and dps as either melee or caster. The melee part is a very heavy gear dependent tree, the dps caster not so much.

2. How steep is the learning curve?

It is actually pretty easily, because you will start with a couple of skills but as you level up you will learn more, but giving you time to master one before the next one becomes available.

3. Which is more gear dependent?

Melee classes are more gear dependent than casters.

4. What are the roles expected from these classes in a raid/dungeon?

Mages is dps and that's what they do best, also crown control since they can sheep enemies and make them unable to do anything, also provide food water and portals to various cities to the party, and they are usually the top dps in groups. Also you will have no problems finding groups, and you only need one set of gear since you will always be dps.

Warlocks is pretty much like the mage, but they do shadow and fire damage only, depending on the talents they can rival the mage in dps.

Warriors are usually the tanks, at lower levels it doesn't really matter what spec you are to tank - as long as you use a shield, one handed weapon, defensive stance and sunder armor, and taunt when nedeed you will be ok - but at higher levels you will have to be protection speced and that can hurt your solo capabilities by making it slower if you were either arms or fury.

Paladins at higher levels are usually healers (and they are really good at it too), but they can be dps and tanks too. A nice geared paladin with the right talents can do any of those tasks easily. But at end game people will mostly like expect you to heal.

Shamans are almost like the paladins and their destiny at end game will be mostly like to be healers, unless your guild gives you another option. And even at lower level instances people will expect the shaman to heal.

Those are simply what people expect from those classes but don't forget the final decision is yours and what you like to do the most.

5. Which attributes should I prioritize when choosing gear?

That is going to depend on your class and the talents you choose, but a quick guide line (assuming you were speced to only solo)

Mages intellect, stamina, spell critical, spell damage gear but the latter is found mostly in mid-high level gear.

Warlocks stamina, intellect and spell damage.

Warriors dps, strength and stamina as much as you can.

Paladins is going to depend on your talents, if going melee dps probably like the warrior, if healer then healing gear with intellect, stamina, +healing, spirit and so on.

Shamans are the same thing as the paladins, if you're a caster than of course you need caster gear with intellect, +spell damage, if you're m elee strength, agility, stamina.

What the difference between a slow and a fast weapon is, apart from their speed. Why would someone equip a slower weapon over a faster one?

Slower speed = burst damage, usually preferred in PvP, almost as if it was a spike in GW but from a single player.

Fast weapons = usually good for classes that dual wield, like shamans, rogues, and warriors. They usually use a lower attack speed weapon in the main hand and a fast one in the off hand.

As for the healing, the only way to heal yourself in battle if you're getting hit and you don't have any healing skills is drinking a potion and that has a 2 minute cooldown so use it wisely.

Anyways these are mainly guide lines and if you have any other questions please feel free to ask :)

Ps: If I made any mistake please correct me ^_^

RE: I need info...

Thanks a lot for all the information!

I've decided that I'll make a warlock and a paladin.

Thanks again for the info!

EDIT: I forgot to ask, but is there any way to transfer gold from alliance to horde apart from having a friend and using the neutral AH? because I'd like to re-roll horde, but I don't want to have to throw away ~200gold. If there isn't, I'll just have to stay alliance. Thanks!!

You're welcome! Good choice on the classes too, hopefully you take them to level 70 and enjoy the end game. :)

Like Cress said no there isn't another way, unless you have another account. Why not roll a horde toon on the Turalyon realm... I play there... alone lolz
