| Frost Mage or Protection Paladin? |
|
|
|
Hey all im trying to decide which character to finish leveling next and was trying to decide between mage and pally. I have a ret pally but was thinking of changing him to a protection pally once hes higher lvl and I get +spell gear/spell crit whichever would be more important I'm not sure.
My question is at lvl 70 how well can a protection pally do damage with say..holy shield and other abilites they would use with +spell damage. Basically I was thinking prot since im kinda wanting to play a tank, and use aoe to hit multiple targets at a time. Also do protection paladins use their aoe abilities to tank in instances?
This is the build I was planning on going with but all depends how well end game prot pallys can do damage.. Protection Pally Build

no, pallys' don't use their aoes in instances because it breaks all the CC on mobs and causes wipes, and prot pallys' need stam, you dont need spell crit as a tank. and if you want to do dps w/ a mage, go arcance or fire, frost is more for PvP in others opinion, in mine i think its for mages that don't know how to play anything else, but thats just me. honestly you should ask dru about the mage stuff.

In instances where CC is needed, as a Prot Pally, don't use Consecrate. The rest of the AoE is reactive...meaning it only happens if they hit YOU :p Shield Spikes, Retribution Aura, Holy Shield, and Blessing of Sanctuary are all reactive an hold agro for a Pally tank. I haven't started gearing up for the higher instances yet, as I'm only 53 (halfway to 54). I had to take over the tank role since our GM is moving around trying to find a place to live :p

Ahh ok thanks.. was a bit confused because I've had people tell me aoe breaks aggro but have had prot pallys tell me they keep aggro with aoe. I also think your build makes more sense than mine did as I didn't quite read all the skills.. namely combat expertise with the 10% extra stamina. So then +spell damage could be usefull after all if your tank gear happens to have that in addition to the stamina +def etc. that you would need.
Main reason I was thinking of maybe going with frost mage is being able to kite an elite spawn untill you kill it and was wanting to also be able to farm. Thx guys.

You will have an easier time farming with frost mage because you will kill much faster. As for the AoE aggro thing I am not quite sure what you are talking about exactly. AoE should keep the aggro at the pally, especially if you use rightous fury like your supposed to lol.
As for frost kiting yeah you can kite elites. meh.

I think they mean the problem with paladin tanks is that consecration can break crowd control. But if the paladin is any good, that shouldn't be a problem at all.
Overall, I'd say that for farming a frost mage would be better, but if you want to do a lot of instances later on, it will be easier to find a group as a tank. Depends on what you want to do, really.
Edit: also note that with a good paladin tank you don't really need any crowd control anyway. Which makes dps classes that have no real crowd control (doomkins, shamans, etc.) happy about grouping with you.

end game prot can farm mobs better then any other class in the game, we can easily mow down 10-20 mobs at once and as for instances. if you dont concecrate you WILL NOT KEEP AGGRO, avoiding cc is rather easy but i have seen....some rather retarded prot pallys and as for some basic idea as to how to gear for tanking....you need stam and nothing but stam. end game prot pallys use abour 5k mana tops with 200+ spell dmg and then you funnel the rest into stam, its hard to set a general amount for stam since its always increasing pending on your gear but generally 12k+.
as for mages, as was said frost is pvp. iv seen some good arcane mages but as for how well they work on raids i really couldnt say, fire is the general pve spec now adays and imo is the most enjoyable 1 but thats just me. my mage is frost at 46 and iv played a buddies 70 pyro mage, fire was far more fun but who dosnt have a facination with fire? :P
ultimately the choice falls on what you really want to be doing, tanks are far more needed then yet another dps and u can also spec ret or holy once in awhile for a change where as mage is stuck doing dps and dps alone. hands down id go with pally but that shud be obvious since mines 70 and my mage isnt ;)

To the first quote, any good prot pally will know how to use consecrate effectively with cc in place. Simply you let the cc'ers in your group know how it works. You must consecrate far enough away that you won't break the cc in place and this can be done by pulling the mobs back far enough from cc. Consecrate is one of the best threat generators for the prot pally.
To the second quote, I think you're a little confused. Aoe (consecrate) generates aggro/threat for the prot pally. It will break cc if the cc is in range but it won't break aggro.
With the 2.3 patch and the introduction of the combat expertise talent prot paladins got a nice boost to stamina. As an end game prot paladin of course you want to focus on stamina as every tank does, but you also want to focus on becoming uncrushable and uncritable which means 490+ defense and 102.4% avoidance.
