10 Million Players

QUOTE
World of Warcraft's community continues to grow, recently hitting a new high of 10 million subscribers around the world. In the three years since the game was first released, the way it has been embraced around the world has far surpassed our expectations, and we're grateful to all of the players who made that possible. We just wanted to take a moment to share the news, welcome the many new and returning players who entered the game over the holidays, and thank all of you for your ongoing support and enthusiasm.

QUOTE
"It's very gratifying to see gamers around the world continuing to show such enthusiasm and support for World of Warcraft," said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. "We're always pleased to welcome new players to the game, and we're looking forward to sharing the next major content update with the entire community in the months ahead."

Well, thats 10 million, folks. Were doing good so far and I can't wait to see how many it is when WoTLK comes out. Gonna be great.

In other news, Blizzard is reported to be the worlds fastest growing company. With all the money they have been making off of their popular video game "World of Warcraft" Blizzard plans to drain the Indian ocean and create a new continent to be named "Azeroth". This new continent will "Be a haven to all gamers. A place for safety from the likes of Jack Thomson and Hillary Clinton". This is the first news story to push Britney Spears out of the headlines.

That's a nice rebound from September.

Wonder what caused that dip, and the rebound?

Edit: Might as well include the image :-)

Well maybe it was everyone gearing up for Warhammer? Which is now being pushed back to June so people decided to play again for the holidays? WoW really takes off around October - Februarry with lots and lots of holday garbage quests and rewards so EVERYONE is on to get that stuff so they can try to sell it for mad cash in the summer lmao.

And Rogue you made me LOL IRL! lol

Is that it?
I find the dip very intriguing. if you look at the overall trend and ignore the spike caused by TBC, the growth-trend continues steadily and unabated until June 2007. Which is around the time WAR's delays started being announced. I'd not expect that to cause a dip though. Hearing the game you're waiting for is going to be delayed by about half a year, minimum isn't what'd make me quit a game I'm playing while waiting for that other game to come out.

So, could there be another reason for a big dip in player activity dropping down from july and hitting bottom in Spetember, only to start climbing up again?
I also see smaller peaks around Jan/feb which are common as they're post- Christmas gift times and it's cold and wet outside. :-)

I'd be interested to know if anyone knows of other possible reasons player activity dipped from July to say November, with all time low in September? Mind that this chart shows player activity, not subions or players. People dual-boxing with multiple accounts can have quite an effect on these charts if, for instance, heal-bots became unworkable during that period that might account for it to some extend.

So, ideas anyone?

Oh and 1.1 billion yearly revenue still isn't enough to fund a small continent with. Maybe an island spelling 'Blizzzard' though ;-)

Wasn't that around the time that Blizzard started to REALLY heavily crack down on the gold sellers? That dip could be caused by some of them abandoning WoW.

Also school (primary and college) started in September which probably had an effect. But Blizzard started with TV ads in November/December and so maybe when the school breaks hit in December people went back to WoW or got it for a present. There are so many more ways to get epic gear now that I think that is causing some people to come back as well.

I have no real evidence to support this -- just my opinion.

Heh, you realize it goes up from September upward? School means more play then :-)

Good thought though, but the activity here means logging in once per day. Which most school kids would manage. Not sure if the crack-down on Gold selling could account for about 150.000 accounts becoming inactive. That'd be more than one in ten accounts being a farmer/seller and quitting the business.

I don't buy that, as the Azeroth Gold - US Dollar exchange rate hasn't changed that dramatically over the last half year. That's the best way to judge the effectiveness of any anti-gold sell/farm campaign. If the price of gold doesn't rise significantly, it's more about being seen to act than to act effectively. Not that this is an easy issue to deal with by any means.

No, I think school may have an influence on time played, but not noticeably on 'active account status' and while a crackdown on farming might be part of the dip I think there needs to be at least one more factor. Did Blizzard nerf stuff at the end of summer? There wasn't a big release we're all forgetting was there? Maybe something on another platform? Come on folks, think! Speculate! :-)

RE: 10 Million Players

There were some games for ps3/xbox/wii that came out last year, when did Halo 3 come out? I can't remember, usually when those kind of games come out people tend to take a break from the online games till the buzz wears off.

RE: 10 Million Players

Could be that more people started playing again in September because the holidays were over and people came back from vacations/laying in the sun doing nothing?
