| So long and thanks for all the fish... |
|
|
|
I've had a great run here at CoH Gameamp. I remember first coming here after asking Grifter (aka: Blackhawk) where he got the "Seeker of Monsters" badge (The Hollows). I remember working my way up from a lowbie to staff member. I remember how excited I was when I read the first comment on my Triumphant Heroes story. Good times...
Why am I posting this? About two months ago, I signed my life away to Uncle Sam. Starting May 3, I am entering the US Army's Boot Camp. During the entire 9 weeks, I will be unable to use a computer, and after that, I have 21 weeks where I'm not sure if I can or can't play CoH/post on the site. Although my first big purchase will be a computer that can play the game, I don't know if I will be able to continue on...
All I wanted to say was that you've all been fun to work with, and I hope that when I eventually log back on, everybody here will have level 50 characters that I can use to powerlevel Darkpool :)
So, in the immortal words of Doug Adams, "So long and thanks for all the fish."

GOOD LUCK and thank you! I'm sure if you get a laptop and show any brass or drill sargents CoH they would probably let you play. Just let them make a hero also and it should be all good.

Good luck and tally ho!
I'm an Army vet myself, and I say good luck getting a drill seargant to let you do anything else but train. Later, you just have to wait for a time you can play. At worst, you can find a tap-caf when you get some leave.
Hurry back. I assure you, you will be missed.

What a bummer! Not seeing your blazing eyes on posts is going to take some getting used to. Don't think about it, time will fly and you'll be back patrolling the streets of Paragon City before you know it.
Be safe and good journey. We'll keep a candle lit in the window so you can find your way home.

Thank you!!
Thanks for the awesome story you've been telling and most importantly THANK YOU for serving our country you are truly a hero! I served 6 years in the Army and Michigan National Guard and I look back with great pride on my service.
I have never posted to the site yet but I had to when I saw your post. Here's some advice listen and do exactly what the Drill Instructors tell you and if you see combat keep your head down and on a swivel, eyes peeled!! Physical Training or PT as its called, dont cheat on doing the exercises do them all I was a scrawny 150# 5'7" white boy (while I wasnt a wuss I grew up on a farm raising hogs) it was hard at first but when I graduated I came out at 185# of lean mean green fighting machine!!! Make sure you excel at PT and Marksmanship and you'll go far!!! But the one thing that helped me the most was write, write, write, letters that is I made sure I wrote my mom and dad, girlfriend(whos now my wife),aunts, uncles, friends and make sure they write you back news from home will always make your time go faster in fact the make you write letters home so the more the better!
GOOD LUCK SOLDIER And be safe!!

Damn, we will be one H. P. Lovecraft fan short after you leave. Gonna miss your writings and your witicism. Due to vision problems (since corrected with Lasik) when I was of the right age to enlist, I was unable to get into the military, but my heart is always with you. Take down a few Arch-Villains, but keep the Empathy healers handy, we need you back here safe. There is no teleportation safety net out there, so watch your back and keep alert. Are you gonna be a Tanker, Blaster, Scrapper, Defender, or Controller? Take care, and we all hope you will be back with us soon.

I spent 4 years in the Arty and 4 more in the OH NG Cav. God bless you brother. My advice in basic, do what you are told, but keep your nose down, there will be plenty of time to shine when you get to your duty station. And I agree dont short the PT and listen to the guys in the smokey the bear hats. Finally I counted basic up and down, start off thinking of how much you completed (yeah 1 week done) then after you pass halfway count down and always keep in your mind that basic is only temporary.

As many of the others that have posted, I'm prior Army National Guard (enlisted) and now Navy (officer). My best advice for Boot is to take everything seriously. Once upon a time, the training didn't seem incredibly relevant - now is not that time. Learn to survive, brother. I've lost a classmate overseas, and a couple more have been injured. Always remember that the best soldier is the one that comes home. Thanks for everything concerning the site, and good luck with your future.

Good luck to you I just got out of the Navy 6 months ago did a tour of Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. I had more medals than my O-3, he was not to happy. I hope you best of luck, always remember one secret we all have in the military when it comes to boot camp. It is always a mind game nothing but mind games. How can a man be trusted with a weapon when his mind is not ready to fire it. Just a little advice, you will do fine and one last thing, there is nothing on this earth that has made me feel as accomplished as coming home in full uniform knowing I made it through boot camp. Your now a true hero to us all and forever you will hold the memories of those you love now for they will be the only things you will own.

Have fun in boot, and kick some ass! (In between your drill sergant kicking yours) I'm not a military man, but almost half of my SG is. Get yourself a good gaming laptop, and get back into the action if you can! You will be able to play depending on where you are stationed. Hope you get lucky!

Wow, good for you and I sigh a heavy breath known that in the beginning you choose to play a hero and fight for the greater good, and now in the Real world you are doing the same. I tell ya this speakes volumes for your character. You will do fine in Boot Camp, and remember at Mess its true you can eat as much as you want but you HAVE to eat it all, and usually there is running afterwards so choose wisely :)
Is there a buddy of yours that play CoH that can keep us up to date on your progress? I would really like that.

I'd like to thank the people that responded to my first post. You guys here are awesome!
I've started collecting all the advice that people are giving me about the military. Currently, I'm seeing how much file cabinets are running... :P
Well, if I can't actually play CoH, I'll be sure to post back on the forums as soon as I'm allowed to use the Internet again.
(PS to anybody who was in the Army: Can you use the Internet during AIT?)

Every AIT is different, even when I was on Ft Sill we had a pass every weekend from around 1700 friday to 1700 Sunday. Some friends from basic did not get weekends for the first 1/2 of AIT. Our barracks didnt have phones in the room in AIT either, come to think of it I dont think my first permanent party barracks did either.
From what I observed...
The longer and more technical the AIT the more freedom you get because they are focusing on your "mind". The shorter and more physical they have less time to give you freedom and are not worried about interfering with your though process. This is only what I saw on Ft Sill at the time I waqs there, not any official policy.
I'm not sure If I may have missed it but what is your MOS and where is your basic?
I went to basic in "artillery city" Ft sill OK. I was a 13P MLRS/LANCE Fire Direction. I was stationed in Ft Hood TX, Camp Essayons Korea, then back to Ft Sill in just 4 years. Finally National Gaurd back home in Ohio
