well i recently recieved good news from my mom that i get to go work for her for the rest of the tax season and ill be earning some good money in it. I calculated the hours and i expect to make $1035.*part time* this got me thinking on making a new computer so AS i am a newb at finding a good motherboard and processor to match it i need help.
Im gonna buy a good case, can transfer my atx psu 500w to the new one. looking around 2.0-3.2 ghz processor speed.
ID like to have a capability of having upto 8 gigs or ram...4 or 8 slots.
also was thinking about SLI cards or those ATI versions but then ill have to buy a new psu. The motherboard should have onboard sound.
looking for a 120gb ram *if you can find me more gb for cheaper be my guest*
i have $1035 US to spend so guys help me out.

8 Gigs of ram huh? Your probably going to spend 1/3rd of the budget on just RAM then, as you'd need 2GB per chip of RAM.
I just checked TigerDirect, for 2GB RAM Chips running at 800Mhz (fastest) DDR2 costs:
$139.99
Thats for 2x 2GB chips, making it 4GB over 2 chips.
= 279.98 So far my calculator says, question though, you need Vista for 8GB, and why do you need 8GB in the first place? Do you for example work with 3D objects example: Cinema 4D, CAD or Photoshopping? Otherwise, 8GB is overkill for any hardcore gamer, overkill in this case just costs money, as atleast 4GB will never be used. I got 4GB of RAM myself, and even Crysis doesnt take up more then 2GB tops.
Just thought i'd inform you about it, before you get a computer that costs more money then you'd actually ever will use the coming years, by then DDR3 RAM is the standard which is even faster, so dont consider it an investment in the future either.

Ok, i thought you meant you want 8GB in the first place, with a 4 Slot motherboard you can upgrade to 8GB RAM, aslong as you make sure you buy RAM chips with 2GB on each. making it 4x 2GB in total then.

its 9 am here....once i wake up and my brain starts working ill see what i can find. As for your case question, theres no compatability persay but you need to make sure your going to have enough room for your mobo, powersupply, hd drives and all that good stuff without it being overly crowded

I dont mind setting up a buildup of components for him either, i do suggest not getting you and me ''against'' eachother, if hes already confused enough about hardware, 2 ''techies" both bringing up spec sheets of what to buy will totally destroy his mind, no offense intented, just saying that it will be too much techtalk to handle ^^
I give the honors to you though if you want, im more at home in European/UK websites then with US&A websites, cause dollars are literally almost twice as much numbers then i see in prices here.

I think HackingHippie will help you with that, you can help him first though, tell us what he doesn't have to buy.
For instance, what do you keep from the old computer?
Monitor? Speakers? Mouse/Keyboard? If so, he can just look for the casing, motherboard etc.
Also, you got Vista yourself? or does that need to be included for the price, as 4GB of RAM will not work on Windows XP 32-bit, it will show up as 3.5 or 3.7GB of RAM. And 8GB wont work at all.

well id like to get vista but then downgrade with an xp cd i have *so that i can switch back and forth* . mouse, keyboard, and monitor is gonna stay with me
speakers im gonna keep cuz i just use a headset so it doesnt matter. i also need a vga input for the graphics cards cuz my monitor is vga only.*blue one*
Reallly i need someone to find me a...
1. motherboard (upto 4 gigs cap. or anything near it) SPending limit $200
2. processor (2.0ghz-3.2ghz) spending limit $150 or $200
3. Case which fits
because the video card, ram, psu,hd and cd drives are easy to shop for when i get the motherboard and case specs.

A couple additional notes from when I built mine:
If you get a new motherboard, and you're thinking of keeping the PSU, make sure the motherboard connections match. Mine was something of an extreme case where I was trying to salvage what I could from a 6 year old computer, but my old PSU wouldn't work. The large motherboard connection was completely wrong, and I also didn't have the secondary 4- or 8-pin connector that is on current models. Currently I've seen both these options
As I understand it, the only way to have the computer recognize more that 4GB os RAM is to have a 64-bit OS.
If you have the opportunity to start buying components early, little by little, TigerDirect runs several specials weekly. The other day, I think I say 2 1GB Corsair PC6400 800mHz memory for about $40 after I think a $40 mail in rebate.

I have a question real quick....do you prefer AMD or Intel processors?
This is the stuff I just ordered
Motherboard and Processor actually only had to get the mother board as I already have the processor
Ramm
Video Card
Not the greatest of stuff but for the cost it is not bad in my opinion.

AMD = Usually cheaper, stay away from their QuadCores for now, they have a bug within them, in February the new batch will be shipped that doesnt have the TLP bug, but for now, Skip it, the only way to solve it is to sacrifice 10%-15% of efficiency, making it worthless. For dualcores AMD is fine though.
Intel = More Expensive, though generally has a wider range of motherboards for Intel CPU's, and their CPU's are known to be less power consuming then their AMD counterparts, Also are better known for OverClock capabilities.
Not trying to bash AMD, i like em as much as i like Intel, but the mistake they made is their fault and their fault alone, their Quadcores (Phenom), at this moment, Suck because of a production line problem.

I soooooooooo agree with you on everything. The main reason I have stuck with AMD is because of cost. Being married with children I am always looking to keep the PC costs down:)

Aye, off-topic:
AMD's error with the Quadcores came from the fact they started to produce smaller CPU's, same as Intel did a few months before them. However, heres the flaw:
When Intel invested millions in equipment to produce smaller chips, they first tested and produced old designs, from the previous size. To make sure everything was alright and go from there.
Now AMD came, and as we know AMD has some money troubles as off late, so they immediatly did not only Invest in multi-million dollar equipment, but also immediatly went on trying out whole new CPU designs. This is where the TLP bug appeared in their Quadcores, all cores came past the tests, but the TLP bug has a very minute chance of happening, its expected to pop up after 2 weeks of full CPU load (only under full load), so for example, if you'd have it at full load 12 hours a day, you'd have a guaranteed freeze every month)
For us general consumers, ''Lawl'' who cares, i mean, even i crash my PC sometimes due to using just way too much browsers etc. at the same time.
But what *general* consumer goes Quadcore already? For games? Not worth it seeing the price, Exactly, Servers.
Now Servers need to be reliable, thats the highest priority, companies spend millions on that to keep their websites running, and you just cant afford having a guaranteed freeze every 2 weeks now can you? Exactly, so AMD made a big mistake, and solved the bug now.
But for now, all Quadcores they sell to ordinary customers are discounted to bargain prices, for what reason? Simply, its easier to try and sell half broken items rather then throwing them away, but still, in this case, their haste to outsmart Intel backfired.
Thats the General story that is, others tell something different, but along the main lines, thats what it comes to.

If you want a no-or-low hassle option, I'd suggest looking on newegg and looking into their section bare bones systems.
Just about all come with a case, motherboard, CPU, and power supply, some even have ram too. a lot seem to come with onboard audio too.

i dont care on which processor i pick... I first need to know the price of the selected processor and motherboard so i can see if i wanna go SLI or crossfire because I also will make an extra 300 bucks over the months so i think i can sli 2 geforce 8800s.
If i were to sli 2 8800s or 8600s how many watts would i need in the psu? because i just bought a new psu from newegg and its still under 30 days so i can get my money back.

Well, HackingHippie can do it tonight, otherwise il do it for you, but im too tired atthe moment to think clear, let alone make a good component list.

Yeah, save a ''little'' bit, save around 3K more to buy a pre-build Computer while you can get all components for over half the price, you think building a computer is hard? The only requirement is you know how to handle a screwdriver, and most components is just click N play', only the motherboard and Power Supply need screws to attached them to the case, the rest stays put even if you dont use anything on them.

ew alienware isnt what i expect when i try to make myself a top of the notch pc... besides i think you get better pride when you make your computer then waste $4000!!! If i were a chip n dales dancer .. then that money frows from my butt. but unfortunatly im not.
id rather anyways have lifetime hardware support because system errors i can get around by bios or regestry.

I am in the same search as you for components to build your own. I see you picked out the GTS version, I looked at that one, the GT and the 8600 GT and from what I have read, reviewed and what not the 8800 GT actually a better buy. It is either slightly under or depending on game(s) better than the GTS.
8800 GT
But still very nice card you picked out. I am also more favorable to AMD Processor and Mobo, I suppose Nvidia cards as well....maybe its just me but they seem to more gamer friendly. But I am sure others can disagree and praise ATI and Intel.

Nice one, i beat you to it though, around 20 minutes ago i send away a PM on a journey towards his Inbox, it was about that Videocard in particular.
I adviced the 8800GT or 8800GTS 512MB aswell, as the GTS 640-320MB versions cost (in europe) more, while they actually have less power then the 8800GT.

For motherboard and CPU i found this for Intel, Intel's more expensive though, but in Dualcores theres no big difference between AMD or Intel, so if you want cheaper CPU's AMD is your choice, if you want Quadcore, stick with Intel though.
Motherboard:
ASUS P5N-E SLI LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 650i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard
$120
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813131142
This motherboard has 4 RAM slots for up to 800Mhz 8GB RAM, should suffice for future upgrades.
This motherboard also comes with SLi, so in the future you can just buy and install a second 8800GT and run them in SLi at the highest speed.
CPU/Processor:
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Conroe 2.4GHz 4M shared L2 Cache LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor
$230
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16819115003
This CPU is the best you can find in the Dualcore class for Intel, the E6600 (just like the Quad 6600) has according to alot of articles simply the best performance/price ratio.
If you want cheaper CPU's, then i guess you have to move to AMD, as you can get more GHz for a cheaper price for dualcores.
AMD Motherboard:
ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe AM2 NVIDIA nForce 570 SLI MCP ATX AMD Motherboard
$135
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813131013
[i]This is a good yet cheap motherboard, comes with SLi aswell for future upgrades, and it also supports 4 slots for up to 8GB ram at the fastest speed for DDR2
AMD CPU/Processor:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ Windsor 3.0GHz 2 x 1MB L2 Cache Socket AM2 125W Dual-Core Processor
$160
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16819103773
AMD Processors are cheaper in price then Intel's, at the expense they consume a few watts more. AMD has simply the lowest prices for Dualcores.
For a case, just look for any ATX case, ATX is the standard case size where most motherboards easily fit in.

just curious could you also find for me a better *probably would be more expensive* processor because i could extend it over the next few months... cuz i would spend such a little portion of the money i make.
Ill look on those cards closer.

Well, i'd then advice you to go Quadcore, as Ghz doesnt really count everything in a processor, its also about the cache and such. If you really want to spend more, but be future proof, go Quadcore.
Prices like that and an average motherboard start with $500. (just before i start searching)
