The difference is:
Private: Illegal.
Public: Legal.
And what was your favorite GW char to play?

Basically, people who play on private servers are criminal scum and should be shot, preferably in the face, whereas people who play on the regular blizzard servers are not (necessarily) scum and should not (necessarily) be shot in the face.
Now if that's not clear enough for everyone, I don't know what is :)
P.S. zomg, can you imagine bears with laser guns just running around like an elite task force, shooting down all the gold sellers and private server owners? That would be so awesome, Blizzard should do that! This is the best idea I've ever had.

Well, let me just quickly explain what a private server is for those who don't know exactly.
A private server is basically a WoW server that is privately owned by someone other than blizzard that they (and other people that they so choose) can play on without having to pay money to blizzard. Now because it is privately owned the normal blizzard restrictions don't necessarily apply either, so the owner can change the rules of the game as he wishes.
Obviously, this is very much against the rules and I can't really see why people would play on private servers because for one, the population is very low, and being able to bend the rules of the game kind of takes the fun out of it as well. To be quite honest, WoW would be the worst single player game ever made.

Welcome Rank 10 Guy! Hope you like the WoW side of AMP.
Okay, basically the above few posts summarizes what free and private servers are about. I hate to steal your topic, but I have a question for anyone who may read this.
If its illegal to play on a private server, why does Blizz allow them? I just ram a search and saw a HUGE list of servers. Obviously, Blizzard doesnt care that much about people breaking their EULA.
But yeah, I have seen a friend play on a private server, and it gets REALLY boring when you can solo BT... no other interaction needed, just charge in and WTFPWN'DNOOBBBQ!! the enemies....

My guess on that is that blizzard has a HUGE loyal following. The small amount of people running private servers really aren't doing anything to put a dent in the population levels on the legit servers. So although it's illegal, Blizzard isn't bothering with them...at the moment. It's not really worth them expending the resources to go after them.

Like said paid is legal, private is illegal.
If you played a hunter on GW the closest would be a hunter on WoW. But keep in mind the game mechanics are really different, also you have total control over your pet and even the skills it uses.

To those who didn't get it, that's like getting rank 14 way back in the old pvp system.

my personal opinion is also that private servers suck. i know it has been mentioned, but i know someone who plays on a private server, and she got to level 70 in just about a day. she hit level 10 on her first quest. now to me that just would suck all the fun out of the game, and then all that it would be good for is pvp, and private servers have low amounts of people, so you could walk around for hours and not come across another character on some of these relms. battlegrounds might as well be out, because it would take forever to join a battleground. private servers suck

Well it depends, do u have a job? if u do then it barely costs anything. Also $14 a month scares away alot of people, but seriously think about it. how long does a month of school take, it seems forever. Plus the game is 100% worth it. Its a very fun game with new patches constantly coming out.
also, good to see another gw fan coming to WoW. i remember u were in one of my guilds. I recommend joining a server with ur friends, and if u dont like ur friends u can join me and mine on rexxar ^^. me and a couple other friends just started, so itd be cool to have another.

There are paid server transfers, but only from PvP to PvP or RPPVP abd RP to RPPVP, Normal or RP. Normal can only transfer to normal. And you have to pay $20 each time, and there is a 1 month cooldown between server transfers.
Best bet is to pick one with some friends on it and go there. You can always make another toon on a different server.

There are 4 different kinds of servers.
PvP: There are Contested areas, earliest being lvl 15+, where Horde and Alliance can attack each other without warning. This is the server where people talk about getting camped/ganked/etc. But in reality, it's not as bad as people say it is. You do get ganked occasionally, but getting ganked by your level range can be a good learning curve. Getting ganked by 60-70s happens, and until you get your own 60-70, there's not much you can do. Once you get high enough, you can join raids on the opposing faction's town. Stormwind, a popular Alliance town, gets raided 1-2 times a month. This is the server I personally would recommend.
PvE: The only major difference between this and PvP is that you get to pick your battles. You can choose to allow yourself to be attacked.
RP: Role Playing. This is where you actually have to give your character a personality. Refrain from using terms like 'lol'. You can be reported to GMs if you stray out of character.
RPPVP: Combines Role Playing with a PvP server rules.
-------------------
Now, to answer your question about switching servers. You can switch servers from PvP to a PvP or a PvE server. But you cannot switch from a PvE server to a PvP server. You can switch from PvE to PvE.

sumthing i want to add, be careful of pvp servers that have TERRIBLE horde to alliance ratios. my original server was so bad id get ganked at least once during each quest. was so bad i just left to my other friends server.

for the monthly payment, i think it is worth it. you don't have to play like an addict to make it worth it. and i agree to find a server with friends, it makes it alot funner.

As an ex-GW Ranger who recently converted to wow i can higly recomend it for the cost. There feels like MUCH more content and although the mechanics underiding the game are different it's very easy for GW player to pick up.
Aside from Hunter I've found Rogue to be a nice playstyle that I enjoy as much as I did ranger. I can attack with ranged weapons(as with most classes) and I have a huge dodge/evasion chance like GW ranger stances lead too.
Problem I have is getting to lvl 20 and stopping before I realise I've hardly done anything.

| QUOTE | Alliance:
Out of the two choices which you have for the Alliance there is one major difference. Dwarves start out with a much higher amount of hit points and Elves start out with a much higher percentage of dodge (that's in addition to the +1% they get as a racial benefit). What does that mean? That means that dwarves can take more of a beating, which is nice since you don't actually get your pet until level 10, and Elves get hit less often then dwarves do. In the end it all evens out, but that is pretty much the only major difference between the two. Which would you prefer? Double the amount of HP or double the amount of Dodge percentage?
Setting that difference aside Dwarves have a racialy innate talent with Guns (+5 bonus) which pretty much makes them one level higher then other hunters in respect to their skill with their ranged weaponry. Once again, in the lower levels (prior to 30) this is going to give you a slight advantage. But in the longrun it really won't make much difference when you hit the endgame. Elves on the other hand, even though they lack this inherent bonus get a nifty little trick which is unavailable to dwarves and which I find quite invaluable given the right situation... stealth. Elves can stealth, albeit a stationary stealth. Meaning they can't move at all. BUT this ability is quite nice if you're going AFK for a few moments and don't feel like getting ganked by a passing mob or Horde opponent. Or if you're setting yourself up into a nice sniping position. Stationary stealth is the best sort of camoflage you need to prevent from being noticed from a distance. Now this stealt! h pales in comparison to that of a rogue, pretty much anyone who passes within melee range of you will discover you sitting there all by your lonesome. But, considering its a free ability... you can't really complain.
On the flipside Dwarves have a nice tracking ability which allows them to spot treasure chests on their overhead minimap. Not in itself a very Hunter oriented ability but it's just a nice little bonus. But Dwarves also recieve a stoneform ability which gives them some nice immunities at the cost of speed. A nice little ability to have when put in a bind. For instance if your pet drops aggro and you're stuck melee'ing the beast. But those are the differences between the two. You also have their resistance bonuses. Elves get a +10 nature resistance while Dwarves get a +10 frost resistance. Basically Elves are better off against Druids and Dwarves are better off against frost spec'd mages. That's pretty much what it boils down to.
Horde:
Now with the Horde you have a bit more of choice. Statistically Orc's and Tauren start out with a little bit more hitpoints then a Troll does. However the Troll has more of a dodge bonus then his counterparts. See my previous comments for the Alliance for a reminder of the pro's and con's of this aspect.
Now on the upside Troll's have a higher regeneration rate then his counterparts which helps with having slightly less hitpoints. But on the downside Troll's have a bonus (+5) to thrown weaponry. Which is, for lack of a better word, absolutely useless to a Hunter. If you're using thrown weaponry as oppossed to your rifle/bow/crossbow then you're doing something wrong with your Hunter. However, Trolls get two other abilities which are very nice. A +5% damage bonus against beasts (which you will be fighting primarily) and an instant cast rage which you can use when your backed into a corner. Both are very handy to have.
Tauren seem to be the popular choice for Hunters on the Horde side. Why? I'm not to sure but that's what I see running around all the time. Tauren, like Night Elves, recieve a +10 resist bonus to Nature spells as well as a really nice racial trait: War Stomp. Basically it stuns up to five creatures within your area. Nice to have if your pet drops aggro. They also get a +15 bonus to Herbalism but that's not really pertinent to Hunters. If you want to be an apothacary, that's fine, but we're not discussing that in this guide.
Finally you have Orc's which, is my primary choice for Horde Hunters. Orcs, other then having the second highest HP rating, recieve a +5 racial bonus to Axes, his pet's melee damage is increased by +5% which is really nice, a +25% resistance to knockout and stuns which is really REALLY nice and an instant cast fury which ups his strength by 25%.
Overview:
Now like I said before each race has it's pro's and con's but ultimately there is no single "best" race of which to choose from. Each has it's perks and it's ultimately up to you to decide how you want to play your hunter. No one race is better then the others and it's not really possible to "gimp" yourself in this regard. So choose carefully and enjoy your choice. |

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
LOL, ok be ready for comments like these:
"Dirty Nelf... huntard!"
Ok, I'll explain hunters are one of the most played classes in the entire game and a lot of people hate them, they are fun to play with and are very good for PvP but there is the prejudice. Also the Nelf/Hunter combination is the most played combo in the whole game.
Another thing to remember is that you will have so many options that you will probably try out different combinations before you really find out your favorite class. But good luck, and if you want to try Horde, I'm on the Turalyon (US) server just hit me the ign is in sig.

and i copy NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
due the fact im a horde character. and they dont interact all to well. I play on Rexxar, and my IGN: Kelnozz. If u do wish to join me a good hunter is orcs, since they their pets get increased dmg. Also trolls get bow mastery, but then again blood elves have some advantages to. better roll a dice =\
