GW2 and the future of GW?

In another post Wyat_hawke said something that made go "huh?".
He does that more often, I'm not that smart, but this time I decided to go and see what everyone else thinks. Wyat called GW old. Now I'm old too, so I remember over nine years ago when EverQuest came out, a monthly subion game still running today. So if GW is old, that game must be a geriatric.
In my perception, GW is barely into middle-age. Looking around, general life expectancy of an MMOG seems to be about 5 to 6 years, after that they tend to remain on life-support still. But, it seems that ArenaNet is set upon taking a page from SOE's book of blunders by going for a #2 sequel. It might be of interest to note that John Smedley, CEO of SOE, and the Devil according to many a StarWars Galaxies pre-CU & pre-NGE fans, has been publicly saying that naming EQ-II was a mistake. So maybe ArenaNet will rename their game in time.

So what's my usual rambling verbosity leading up to this time? Well, this: GW2 has been announced for a while now and everyone's had time to think about it. What will you do when GW2 comes out?
  • Immediately drop GW and never look back.
  • Keep playing GW and ignore GW2.
  • Play both.
  • Transfer to WOW
  • transfer to any of the dozens of other MMOGs available?

Would it affect your choice if GW2 would end up using a subion based model, which I highly doubt they will btw. Any other factors that would influence your choices?

RE: GW2 and the future of GW?

Since GW2 is free to play, I will most likely give it a try when its released, like I do alot of other MMO's. As for playing it.. I'll play GW til I get tired of it. I enjoy helping people and I enjoy the company I'm around.

Hopefully it will continue in GW2, but you never can tell. As for other MMO's.. I'll still play other games, outside of GW as I do now. :)

If Guild Wars 2 is more fun than guild wars 1 I will move to guild wars 2. If guild wars 2 isn't as fun as guild wars 1 I will drop guild wars 2.

RE: GW2 and the future of GW?

One problem that occurred to me about playing both is that, both games will have holiday events at the same time!!! [presumably] So they might have to double the length of events or something to compensate.

Anyway, my main game is probably going to be The Agency [spy MMO] when it comes out (HG:L was a big disappointment). I'll probably try to pop in for holiday events in GW1 and may or may not pick up GW2 as a secondary game depending on how it turns out.

I'm planning on playing GW until GW2 arrives, at which point I will play it as my primary MMO. If it doesn't live up to expectations, I may consider WoW, however.

Actually I am NOT playing GW currently and havnt in about 3 months, but when GW2 comes out that will drag me in like GW1 did, which would mean I would play it once a day, ranging from various hours of gametime

Both, though if GW2 is at least as good as GW1, I expect to spend most of my time in GW2 (always up for new content).

They've said a million times there won't be a subion fee, but even if there was, I doubt it would affect my playing habits. I've tried several subion-based RPG's, and GW is actually the only one that I WOULD pay for, as the others always feel lacking somehow.

RE: GW2 and the future of GW?

Both, depending how much free time i have that is.

I'd pay for GW2 if it had a submission as i got my hands on a CC now. The only thing i never liked about Monthly Payments is that you pay the same cash for a *normal* game in the store, and then again a monthly payment. That's something that scares me off, double the price, no thanks.
No Monthly Fees don't scare me off too much, but the fact you got to pay up 40-50 up front (even ordering just a account serial online) and pay up your monthly fee aswell makes it bloody expensive.

I prefer one/one, either a monthly payment and perhaps a tenner in the store for the CD's, or no payment and for 40-50 in the store like any *normal/new* videogames are sold for.

RE: GW2 and the future of GW?

Obviuous going to play at least GW2, if its bad I stick with just GW1 (wich I don't think but hey, possible)

I'm expecting from GW2 t have better graphice, storylines would be great as in tyria. All cool stuff like AB, GvG HA, FoW / UW and more new things. Higher level caps, cooler armors. bigger maps. more professions etc.

ofcourse not all would be achieved. but if some are im happy :)

RE: GW2 and the future of GW?

I'm likely to use GW as a break from GW2 IF GW2 retains the same skill over grind concept that GW used to have. The skill system is one of the most important factors for me, we can be pretty sure that the eye candy will be as good in GW2 considering what a great art team they have.

Grind has become more prevelant in GW, it has become the way of stretching the game play while the developers focus on GW2 giving something for the players to do while no new significant content is added. With the increase of PvE only skills came a measure of grind to make them more powerful, this is most obvious with Ursan Blessing, a ridiculously over powered skill (which is great fun!) but which points in the direction of the kind of skill progression that is very common in most MMO's while detracting from the original concept of skill over grind, there is no skill involved with UB - grind the title to max it's power, no need to create your own skillbar UB creates one for you, button mash skills 1, 2 and 3 and your set to take on any foes (as long as you have a competent healer of course).

If UB is the shape of things to come in GW2 then I may aswell go play any number of MMOs out there, I will be very unlikely to commit much time to any game with that kind of skill set up (free or otherwise). If UB is just a band aid in GW to cover up what was a dead elite area and allow more professions into the fray then fine, if it's the future of GW2 I will be dissaponted and not likely to commit as near as much time to it.

I can see the reasoning for GW2 - creating a true MMO out of GW isnt a bad thing if they avoid the obvious pitfalls of boss camping, ganking etc.

Too many un-answered questions about GW2 at this point to give any honest answer except to say it is highly unlikely that I will neglect my beloved Necro in GW and will continue to dip in even if GW2 meets all my expectations of what I want from an MMO.

In my opinion, GW is old for the following reasons.
1) Most of the very best players have quit for various reasons, and been replaced by others who wouldn't have stood a chance before.

2) The game has been oversaturated with skills. A lot do roughly the same, some do exactly the same, some do pretty much nothing. With the amount of skills in the game, skill balance has suffered due to the ridiculously high number of different combos that cannot possibly be tested by the balancers. Also, trying to learn what they all do is a very steep task for new players, which will no doubt put some off.

3) Everything that can be done in the game has been done by many, so there isn't much to strive for.

4) People know a lot about the mechanics of the game so it's more a case of "that will work" or "that won't work" rather than trying stuff, because what's the point of trying stuff when you know from your basic understanding of the game that it fundamentally won't work?

5) The economy is pretty much screwed, everything is either worth next to nothing or stupid amounts of gold and ectos.

When GW2 comes out, I'll buy it. If the PvP turns out to be crap in it, I'll drop it and go back to GW1, I assume there will still be people playing GW1. Depending on how good it is, I may drop GW1, or I may play both. I won't be switching to another MMO, especially WoW. No matter how much ANet sucks at PR and how often their promises are broken, it's nothing compared to the other companies.

EDIT: Of course, if GW2 has a monthly subion, I won't buy it. Simple as that.

RE: GW2 and the future of GW?

Probably play GW2 (if I get a better computer by then) most of the time and switch back to GW from time to time.
Also play other MMO's off course. Right now I have GW, Archlord, Silkroad and ShadowBane on my pc. =]

Also, GW2 is still work for the (not so near) future. Still too many loopholes. *I kinda pointed out one not too long ago*

Noone knows the future, so time will tell.

Anyone else have thoughts on this?

"GW forevah!" or "GW2 is the new black" or mix-n-match?

RE: GW2 and the future of GW?

Mix-N'-Match for me, seeing as Guild Wars 2 will have some bonuses for old GW players.

Though Guild Wars 2 is ofcourse welcoming, they've obviously learned alot from Guild Wars, what people like and don't like, the do's and dont's.

They also know that giving it the ability to run (not play) on basicly every system, is a big bonus.

Im quite sure Guild Wars 2 will feature not only top things Guild Wars offers, but also that ideas are influenced by other top games, such as WoW.

No-one should bash it just because i said that, because its an RPG just like any other, with its own theme & taste.
However, Original idea's are scarce, and if a plan is succesfull, you convert it, you keep the architecture, but wrap it in a new skin, so instead of for example having massive Raids with cartoonish characters, you call it different, and ofcourse have more realistic polygons fighting.

Im welcoming such idea's, i dont hate them, every game has its own style, and Guild Wars players that like the game know that, they prefer this over something else.

RE: GW2 and the future of GW?

After putting so much work into my GW characters and their Monuments, I will at least buy GW2 if they keep the no subion policy.

I have always been strongly against pay-2-play games, coming from a primarily FPS gaming background, my initial ~$50 to buy the game should be more then enough to get as much enjoyment as I want out of it. So if they go subion I will be disappointed and will not play it, but that doesn't sound likely.

I expect GW2 to be full of improvements on an already awesome game - so unless those expectations are grossly disappointed I imagine I will primarily play GW2. How much I will still play GW will depend on how good GW2 is, how many of my gaming buddies pick it up, and if I decide I need other trophies in HoM to "inherit" other stuff.

And of course I will continue to take breaks and do some killing in my FPS games.

I can understand this approach, and you needn't worry. I doubt ArenaNet will do a subscr!ption after saying they won't. 50 bucks for an FPS in perpetuum or until the company goes croak ought to be enough. Thing is, for me that is, FPS games are by and large a bunch of maps, often user generated with precious little of what in the MMORPG market (my background) is called content.

That's where GW is lacking in comparison to all those monthly sub games and the reason why a lot of people left shortly after Factions. It barely had any compared to Prophecies. Prophecies had a very nice campaign, great content. Good quality, low quantity. That's what you tend to pay for with a monthly fee. Content.

It's no coincidence by the way that Guildwars' instanced system shares a lot with the old Battlenet system of lobbies and maps (cities/outposts and missions).
Now for PvP, all the content you need are the maps to stand on, battle-flavours and ladders 'n stuff to show who's top dawg. Oh, and a lot of balancing. PvE requires a bit more manpower to make and maintain.

So for me that's a concern. I doubt GW2 will have the richness of world and content I expect from a MMORPG, the same way GW lacked that in the end. So I'm hoping GW2 will be really casual friendly.
