| I need a little help to improve my computer |
|
|
|
Hi all,
In my house there are 3 computers: mine, my brother's and our family computer.
I play GuildWars on the family computer, because mine isn't fast enough.
The specs of my computer are(from dxdiag):
Microsoft Windows XP
AMD athlon processor MMX 3DNow ~1.0gHz
memory(geheugen)320 mb RAM
wisselbestand 423MB used 350MB useable(beschikbaar)
DirectX-version: DirectX 9.0c
under tab screen:
name: Radeon 9200 Series
fabricant(fabrikant): ATI technologies inc.
chiptype: RADEON 9250/9200 series AGP (0x5946)
Dac-type: internal DAC (400MHz)
total memory(totaal geheugen): 128.0 MB
The specs of the family computer are(also from dxdiag):
Microsoft Windows XP
AMD Sempron processor 4300+, MMX, 3DNow, ~1.8GHz
memory(geheugen)448 mb RAM
wisselbestand 275MB used 499MB available(beschikbaar)
DirectX 9.0c
under tab screen:
name: NVIDIA GeForce 6100
fabricant(fabrikant): NVIDIA
chiptype: GeForce 6100
Dac-type: integrated RAMDAC
total memory(totaal geheugen): 256.0 MB
Is there a way I can make my computer as good as the family computer without paying too much money?
AMP already helped me once with this, but i couldnt make a decision.
I have formatted my computer, that didnt help that much, but the specs may have changed a little bit because I checked the specs of my computer a while ago.
Can someone give me some information about the best solution?

Im sure your comp will be able to run gw, but you need more ram, the graphic card IS passable but the 9200 Series is a bit old. And the 1 GHz CPU worries me too but i think if you increase the ram a little bit you might be able to get GW up and running. And you might be able to run it on max graphics with that card too. I would suggest 512 MB or 1 GB to run gw is good for your computer stats. I just wouldnt waste too much money on that comp since it sounds sort of old, just go and get yourself a 512 MB or 1 GB (1GB = 1024 MB) stick and replace the 320 MB with that, don't mix them they might not work togther.
EDIT: At your family computer: Its very common for windows to tell you you have 448 MB of RAM when you have 512 MB so most likely your family computer has 512 MB but windows likes to take a way from that a little, don't know why tho.

Both aren't the best of PC's, both Videocards are quite outdated, the Geforce 6 will still run Guild Wars, but the Radeon is unable.
I have seen the Radeon 9200 in action, because one of the family computers itself had it, (now upgraded), it DID run Guild Wars but i had to install a new fan and Overclock it, something i wouldn't suggest.
Both computers, if i may be so rude, lack on many places, from what i see none of them even have 512MB RAM, minimal of RAM to run Guild Wars ''properly'' is 512, Page files is what is assigned as Extra RAM on the hard drive mostly for emergencies, does create alot more latency because it has to retrieve data from the slower hard drives.
The best way i can see fit is that you spend a bit of money on a new Videocard, you wont need the best cause your entire system would then need an upgrade, but i'd suggest getting one of the Geforce 6-7 Series cards.
Thats the best way to increase performance, upgrading your RAM will also help, but... well.... spend money on the videocard first, more ram will not help you when you still got an old card.
I dont know how much money you have, but the cards im seeing that can easily help you aren't over 80 euro's, even in the budget list, for 60 you can get a Geforce 6200, which is "slightly" better then the computer your gaming on now.
I cant help you much, the only way to improve performance without spending alot of money (define alot) would be to overclock it, but that brings its associated risks aswell, plus its not for those without much knowledge about Computers in the first place.

The CPU will be able to hold Guild Wars, but it will be just like the RAM, a gigantic bottleneck, and forgive me to say this, but even on a 3Ghz Pentium 4 CPU WITH 2GB RAM the Radeon 9200 can't run Guild Wars any higher then at 1024x800 with everything on low, your lucky if you can squeeze out 10 FPS :/
The best way still would atleast spend some cash on a new Videocard then, Guild Wars so far i've seen isnt that CPU heavy, its more Graphics/RAM heavy, especially on a low-budget (Might have been high-tech once though ;) system like that.

I'm extremely sure his family comp does in fact have 512, But in most cases windows will not read it correctly. Also i have seen 9200's in action myself and they work just fine. But even with that yeah his comps are still old, im just trying to give him a bit of adivse at a low cost to get gw running on his own comp.

Same as i do, but i've been living with the Radeon 9200 for a full year now, so i've seen what it can run and what it can't, the system it was on had no bottlenecks other then the obvious GPU, as mentioned above.
I got it overclocked with a fan at max (300Mhz Core, 277Mhz Memory) and the best i could get out of it was 20-25 FPS with only Textures at max & post processing on.

I know both computer arent good, but mine isnt good enough to run guildwars (it CAN run guildwars but it loads way to slow), but the family computer is.
I want that my computer becomes as fast as the family computer or maybe faster(when looking at guildwars/gaming speed).
So my main question is actuactly: Can I upgrade my computer to the speed of the family computer or do I need to buy a whole new computer?
My budget isnt set, it can go from 80-150 euros for upgrading or maybe little more, and for a new computer that lasts for a long time maybe more.

Change the Graphics card, way better FPS -> faster
Get atleast 1 gig of RAM
try finding a Geforce 8600GT(same I use), I've seen them for 100-150 euros. Or if you want to stick with a Radeon card buy a X1650, they are almost the same as the Geforce.

Guys, please, your going for the stereotypical things now, your like putting a giant engine into a small car. You got all the power in the world and nothing can truly utilize its potential, He can run the 8800 Ultra in SLi for all he cares, and it wont give that much boost, the entire system would be a massive bottleneck.
Ok, so your budget hovers around 100, that's maybe enough to just get a Motherboard and a stick of RAM if your hoping to get a Gaming Computer.
The best buy i can give you is to Upgrade your RAM, get atleast 512MB, otherwise get 1GB so your completely safe, RAM is a steal these days and its too cheap to get.
As for a Videocard, don't go any further then what your computer can use, the 7 Series will already be an overkill as the weak Processor/CPU will simply have a hard time already, but atleast your graphics will be alright.
Graphic Cards in the 6-7 Series go for under 70 euro's, with 1GB RAM being around 20-30 euro's, your at 100 euro's as you mentioned is your budget.
To be totally true with you, if you want a gaming rig, dont bother upgrading, it will be more expensive buying a new Processor that fits your current motherboard, then just basicly buying a whole new system.
The average (SYSTEM ONLY), for around 300-350 euro's you can really get a nice budget-PC that can easily run Guild Wars and run Crysis in low mode (just exampling)
With system ONLY im meaning that you already have:
Monitor,
Keyboard,
Speakers/headset,
Casing,
Mouse,
DvD/CD player.
Cause you can get a decent motherboard for around 60 euro's,
A nice CPU (AMD is cheaper then Intel) can easily go for just 80 Euro's.
A Power Supply can go as low as 40 Euro's (would get around 350Watts, thats Well Enough for a mid-range system.
RAM (DDR2), just 1GB goes for 25 Euro's or even lower.
A videocard, like in the 7 Series range can go for 70-80 Euro's.
After that your done so far i see, and that all for under 300 Euro's!
We are talking here about building your own system though, but just listen to me for a minute, we're not living in the stone-age anymore, these days User-Friendliness has propelled ''Do It Yourself'' to a whole new level.
As i mentioned countless times before, if you have ANY skill in handling a Screwdriver, your fit for building your own computer.
The manuals provided explain every how-to-install question possible, most of it contain nothing more then just inserting the chip in the right slot, and then Gently Pushing the card into the slot until you hear *click*
Seriously, most people are afraid and refrain from building their own Pc's, and rather spend double the price on a pre-built machine, its too easy these days.
Edit: added additional information on prices.

At the current stock rate that would cost 192 euro's, but he'd have to ship it and so on, dont think thats worth it, plus there might be offers in his own country.
But atleast its an idea.

Guild Wars runs just fine on our family pc, which has:
- 1 gb RAM
- AMD Athlon 64 3000+
- Radeon 9600 pro
Since that one is 3,5 years old, an equal system shouldn't be too expensive.

I run on a second computer (that bro plays GW on):
Intel 1 ghz
512 mb ram
40 gb harddrive
LALALA
And it plays the game just fine. A 1 ghz is plenty powerful for GW. Ironically enough the 1 ghz has a pci radeon 9250 and has no problems.
If you tweak your machine and keep it clean without it being bogged down with unnecessary processes, some of these old machines can still pull the weight.
To add insult to injury.... I had GW running playable on a old 400mhz a while ago.... It can be done if you know what you are doing :D

thanks for all the reply's, but I'm not sure what to do.
I want a "gaming" computer.
I want to be able to play GuildWars, Call of Duty(1), and Warcraft III.
GuildWars has the highest requirements, so lets focus on that one.
I have GuidWars Prophecies and Nightfall.
I might buy other expansions later.
I've asked a "computer-store-guy" how much the Ram would cost, and he advised me to get 512MB or maybe less because the system wouldn't hold it otherwise.
He did tell me 512MB was 54,- and he couldn't find the price of 1GB in the computer.
I could ofcourse take two RAM-sticks of 512MB, but that would cost 108,-
If I can make my computer as good as the family computer with this, I might do it, but if it wont be as good I dont think it's worth it.
I could also buy a whole new computer, but I dont know how expansive that would be.
Lets say I would buy the pieces and build it my own:
How much would a 2.5-3 GHZ processor(or equivalent) and 1-1.5 MB RAM cost?
Ofcourse I need more than just a processor and some RAM, but I mean how much that, and the graphics card, motherboard etc, would cost all together.
I already have a screen(which is 1024x768) and a keyboard, mouse and speakers.
What is the best thing I could do?
EDIT:
chrisworld, that sound like a very good computer for less than 300 dollar
but do I get that computer+keyboard+mouse+speaker for only 300 dollar?
EDIT2:
I just calculated it from dollar to euro, and i would be around 188,- I don't think that is possible for such a good comp... but what is it?

It seems your using Old RAM (DDR) instead of the newer (DDR2) ram, hence its probably so expensive, as 1GB at most stores of DDR2 ram sells for less then 30 euro's.
If you want a gaming computer, we're talking about expensive, you mean you just want a mid-range computer.
I just checked on a website which is from your country, and i tried to keep everything low, good enough to play Guild Wars, but low enough that perhaps, if you can save up a month of cash or something, you could buy the components, ITS NOT Pre-built cause you can't afford the price tag that comes with it.
Ok, considering you already have a Casing, Hard Drive, Monitor, Keyboard, Mouse, Speakers and a DvD Drive provided, i made up a system as cheap as possible while yet offering nice performance, i could have gone lower, but then your going to brands quite unknown, and often that means you can send back your items after 2 months as they burn out.
Motherboard:
Foxconn K8M890M2MB-RS2H, Socket AM2,
39,72 = 40
http://www.azerty.nl/producten/product_det...et-am2-mic.html
Nice small motherboard, just one PCI-Express slot, but still reliable, has two memory slots for RAM, meaning you can later on upgrade if you want to add another Gigabyte of RAM.
Very cute motherboard, provides all you need and no more, exactly that which keeps the price small.
Processor:
AMD Athlon 64 X2, 4000+ (65w), Socket AM2, Boxed
57,48 = 58
http://www.azerty.nl/producten/product_det...hlon-64-x2.html
This is the most expensive thing in the whole setup, running at 2.1Ghz this Processor was the only one they actually have in stock.
You can go lower Ghz if you dont mind, but there is little difference in price/performance, and you'll save a tenner while going to 1.8Ghz.
Random Access Memory (RAM):
Kingston KVR533D2E4/1G, 1024 MB, DDR2, PC4200, 533 MHz
20,17 = 20
http://www.azerty.nl/producten/product_det...533d2e4-1g.html
With an eye on the future, just buy 1Gigabyte of RAM now, it might be 9 euro's more expensive then 512, but you'll save 1 euro while getting 512MB more.
Plus, if you want in the future, you can easily get another 1GB Chip and fit it in aswell. So you got 2GB in total (Which is enough for all games today)
Videocard:
XFX Geforce 8400GS,GDDR2, PCI Express x16, 256MB
34,71 = 35
http://www.azerty.nl/producten/product_det...rce-8400gs.html
I looked around a bit, lots of Videocards around, and many on that website are being sold with great discounts cause interest in them is low.
This card runs on PCI-Express, and will fit in the motherboard suggested.
Core Speed is everything, there are cheaper cards that offer more memory, but thats a trick, the Core makes the difference in how fast it can process graphics, the memory only saves Textures (the skins/designs & colours on 3D objects)
---------------------------------------------
This brings the price to:
155 in total, not bad i say, and you got a system that will beat your family computer in every aspect.
I can go lower if you want, you can go for the 1.8Ghz Processor, take just 512MB of ram, and then the price will only be: 110

I do already have a casing (the thing around the stuff which protects it against dust and stuff right?), a keyboard, mouse, speakers and a CD drive. But do I already have a hard drive which is good enough?
But I think you didn't understand me good, 150,- isn't a problem, I could go 50 or maybe even 100 higher.
If it would go 50-100 euro higher I want it to last for a long time.
Anyway thanks again!

Yes, that metal thing is the casing, does it look like one of these designs?
Aslong as its anything like this ^ big it will fit.
THIS ^ IS NOT THE RIGHT CASING.
As for the Hard Drive, i dont know, the only thing i know is that you might have to re-activate Windows (you undoubtably have a valid serial code so thats no problem) because your running new hardware.
To check your Hard Drive space go to ''My Computer'', then Right Click and select C: D: Partitions and click on ''Properties(Eigenschappen in Dutch)
That should tell you exactly what you need.
As for adding 100 more, we'll make the budget 250 Euro's then ok?
Il go check the same website again later on this afternoon to make a new 2-buy list.

total size is 19.1 GB
EDIT:
If you're going to look at buying some better pieces, could you make it slightly less than 250? If a system which costs 250 would be way better you can make 250 of it.

Ok, im raising the budget to 250 euro's then, let's see what i can dig up, im using the same website again, cause its a good one and trustworthy to order from.
Motherboard:
ECS AMD690GM-M2,Retail
42,88 = 43
http://www.azerty.nl/producten/product_det...md690gm-m2.html
A more advanced Motherboard, it has a better Audio/Sound chip and offers 2 more USB ports.
The previous adviced Motherboard also was out of stock for the coming 2 weeks, and even then still unknown if it will arrive even this month.
CPU:
AMD Athlon 64 X2, 5000+ (65W), Socket AM2, Boxed
87,31 = 87
http://www.azerty.nl/producten/product_det...hlon-64-x2.html
With a bigger budget its better to invest in a faster Processor aswell, this one runs at 2.6Ghz and should suffice, some good comments about it, especially about the surprisingly silent stock-cooling fan, usually those provided make alot of noise.
Power Supply:
Xilence 350W,350Watt, Retail
28,18 = 28

I added a Power Supply this time, this one is guaranteed to be compatible with the motherboard adviced. 350 Watts easily is enough for your PC.
NOTE: Just because it says 350 Watts doesn't mean your computer actually uses 350 Watts, it only means it can provide Up To 350 Watts of power.
Your computer, at full load would most likely consume no more then 250-300 Watts.
RAM:
2x Kingston KVR533D2E4/1G, 1024 MB, DDR2, PC4200, 533 MHz
20,17 x 2 = 4
http://www.azerty.nl/producten/product_det...533d2e4-1g.html
Exactly the same RAM as before, but now two of them, meaning you get 2GB of RAM and you dont have to worry about getting another one, 2GB is well enough for any games these days, and by the time they will require more, your more in need of a better Graphics card ^^
Graphics Card:
Asus EN7300GS, 256 MB, DDR2, PCI Express x16
40,51 = 41

Apparantly, this puppy has a faster Core Speed then its ''cheap'' 8 Generation series friends, Remember what i told about Core Speed?
The higher the Core Speed, the more it can process at the same time, Faster = Better.
Memory doesnt matter too much, its just for storing Textures.
You might ask? What does it mean between the two?
Well, as said, The Core handles the graphics processing, and Memory STORES the graphics ''textures'', in other words the colours/stripes and other details on 3D Objects.
What will you notice with Memory? Well, if you got low memory, you will notice the game will stutter for a few moments when you turn around, as it has to load the textures behind you. This is less bothersome then having a Core that cannot handle 3D objects, because even without turning around it would stutter.
Voila! This brings us to the price of:
239,22
Which is slightly under Budget aswell!
You got a system that easily outperforms your Family Computer, and you can run Guild Wars on it on high rest assured.
The only problem might be you have to push your other family members away from it if they want to play games aswell! :)

Ok, you can just get one Chip of RAM and buy this Hard Drive aswell:
Western Digital Caviar SE16 80GB SATA II 7200 8MB
37,20 = 37
http://www.azerty.nl/producten/product_det...ii-7200-8m.html
This Hard Drive provides 80Gigabytes of space, enough for you if you have handled things up to now with just 20Gigabytes.
It also comes with a SATA connection which provides faster speed so your games will load even faster.
EDIT: I choose for Western Digital because it is simply THE BEST Hard Drive manufacturer there is, next comes Seagate.
All others have their problems, and i have had them aswell:
Maxtor & Hitachi, both sell cheap Hard Drives, and remember, You pay for cheap, you get cheap.
If you dont mind using a hard drive for just 3-6 months until it breaks, go for them, if you want one that last atleast 5 years. Go for Western Digital or Seagate, you can browse around for complaints about it.
And you will find Hitachi & Maxtor have more complaints ;)
TIP! You can use your old Hard Drive aswell, although it will be on a slower connection, if you only use it to store Windows on you can put all your games on the new Faster one.
Once windows is loaded nothing basicly matters if the hard drive is fast or not.

Do you mean I can have 2 hard drives at the same time?
So I could put windows on the 20gb one, and all games, other software and things on the new one?
And my computer becomes only faster if I use a bad and a good hard drive instead of only the good hard drive?

YES Exactly, you can use two hard drives at the same time.
Just put the big cable your old hard drive has and plug it into the new motherboard.
Well, you see, a Fast & Slow hard drive doesnt hamper the system much, it depends how you set it up.
The slow hard drive is perfect for just storing windows on, that also means that if something gets infected with a virus, or if your windows starts getting corrupted, when you format that drive you keep all your games and other data.
Windows doesn't require a fast hard drive really, only during the start-up (boot) does it maybe make a 2-3 second difference, is that truly worth it? Because when windows is done loading, your computer wont need much data to read from it anymore.
If you'd for example would put a game on the slow one, it would take up to a minute or two longer to load a level/map, a big difference because it is alot more data it has to load instead of just plain windows.
Edit:
Your computer goes just as fast if you will only use the Fast New Hard drive, the only difference is that you'd have 80GB's instead of 100.
Also, you would have to completely reinstall Windows on a new hard drive, while with the old one you would probably only have to reactivate it due to new hardware being found.
I do suggest if you install windows on just a new hard drive, always make two partitions, one 10-15GB one for just windows and small files, and the rest for other data. So if you have to reinstall windows you dont lose All our files.

Depends what your Computer Store is like, usually stand alone Tech shops has more (excuse me) experienced people, because they also sell parts single, instead of just pre-built machines and the odd video & Audiocard.
Plus they test out systems, which for multi-media shops is basicly "Not Done"
Plus it comes down to the person him/herself, shops naturally want to make the customer pay more for profit.
Glad to have been of Service. ^^
