Hello, I was just wondering if anyone could help me. Since I've installed Guild Wars on my new computer (which has vista) the game seems to flicker, as in I play ingame and then for a split second I get my desktop screen flick on! The flicker literally last half a second but I get it every couple mins or so.
I've no idea what on earth might be causing this, considering it's a pretty new computer I doubt or at least hope it wouldn't be the video card.....I can't see that because I play crysis on this computer fine :S
Wondering if anyone can help me out! :(
Thanks in advance :)

Well Vista isnt all that great to play games with. Dont think it supports games as well as XP or any other program does. I get the same thing on this Laptop which also has Vista.

It might help to know what machine and if it is a after market video card. Like for instance.... Smack a 8800GT in a stock Dell with a 400watt power supply=TROUBLE!!!

Well i have Vista, but i never had this problem! :S
what you could try and this helped me with ANY game if it was not working, running it as a Admin. that helped me mostly but yeh try that.
Studies show that 92% of teens listen to rap. If you are part of the 8% that listens to real music the add this to your signature.

Not True, i ran the system with a 400Watt trashcan and it worked marvelously, and even now I've only upgraded to 500Watts because i got a newer & better performing PSU.
Motherboard: Asus M2N-E SLi
CPU: AM2 Athlon 64 X2 +5600 2.8 Ghz OC'd @ 3Ghz (non-stock cooling)
RAM: 4x 1GB DDR2 PC-6400 800Mhz
OS: Windows XP Professional (32-bit)
Sound card: Creative Audigy SE
320GB Western Digital HDD (Sata2)
500GB Western Digital HDD (Sata2)
And, here's your shocker:
GPU: PNY 8800GT 512MB, with additional McGuyver Style Copperplating for cooling.
Its performing no different with +100 more watts at its disposal.
On-Topic:
I've browser Teh InturWebz and found nada on your problem, although quite a few posts have been found of Flickering problems, all the answers where Either Re-Downloading drivers (FIRST download the new ones, THEN uninstall using Control Panel's "Add/Remove Software" the drivers. Reboot, and THEN clean install your new drivers)
The other was turning off Anti-Aliasing if that was on.
Sadly, none of those that had the problem made a reply confirming it helped, leaving doubt that either it did indeed solve it, or didn't do a thing.
I'd suggest you just try downloading and installing new drivers regardless, it could be that something got corrupted, or your running old drivers that might not be entirely Vista-supporting.

Notice how I said Dell??? This sounds like a home build machine? If you take a computer manufactured machine and do that you are in fact asking for trouble. The PSU used in most off the shelf systems are only rated at a max...And any time on a crap PSU=disaster!!! Since watts are not really the factor here.... To be technical its whats being put out on the 12v rail.. Most junk PSUs only give 12-17 amps on the rail and a good Video Card can eat those amps like candy. My PSU is pushing 32 amps on the 12v rail...But I spent 100$+ for it.....Junk stock PSUs can't handle the amp drain of a good video card!

Didn't see the connection between Dell using awful PSU's, not that im not in for a good night of Dell Bashing, just didn't spot the connection that soon. The Sarcasm wasn't that obvious for me ^^

Was not intended to be sarcasm... It could be any off the shelf system. IE...Dell,Hp,Compaq,IBM..... These system specs are made for the purpose they were made for (browsing, light gaming, anything with the onboard stuff it comes with).
A weak PSU is one (if not the) leading cause of video card problems.

Well, back to the original poster.
I also get that while running GW on my Vista laptop. I believe it has something to do with an update that occurred in January, as that's when I noticed it start. It happens less often if you run GW as an administrator, but I haven't been able to come up with a solution, nor seen one on any forum.

Happened to me when I played on Vista too. There probably is some way to fix it but I couldn't figure it out so I just played it on my other computer.

Wow thanks for the help guys! I'm glad I'm not the only one with this issue, I've actually been running it on admin all ready! I seriously hate vista so much, why'd they make something that's not half as good as XP! :X Seems all my trouble with games has been vista!
Anyways going to give it a shot at compatability mode (xp) if that doesn't work I'll give a go at re-installing the drivers!
Thanks again for your help guys, good to see a nice community on a forum :)
