| More Than One Guild Ladder?? |
|
|
|
Something has been bothering me about GW for a while now, but I haven't been able to nail it down.
Then it came to me last night.
Some of you remember when Guild Wars was supposed to be about the "casual" gamer I'm sure. What happened to that? One of ArenaNet's core philosophies back during Prophecies beta and early days was that someone who didn't have endless hours in which to play the game (me for instance) should still be able to compete (at all levels of the game including and especially in PvP).
That absolutely is not the case any more. If you want to have any chance of putting up a fight in anything other than Random Arenas you have to practicepracticepractice as a team. If you don't have the time to dedicate to this practice, you aren't going to have much luck in PvP (especially GvG and HA, and let's be honest, TA, RA and AB's don't REALLY count). In fact you will get rolled as often as not.
The concept of designing a game with the guy (or gal) who has a job (or two), a significant other, and sometimes wants to get out of the computer chair and do something other than be leet was probably the thing I was most attracted to when I discovered this game (with the "no monthly fee" thing a close second). To bad that concept died on the vine. Guild Wars has become a pretty standard MMO full of time sinks, grinding and leetsters ditching school to pwn noobs.
Even the PvE game has become "un-casualized". Mob patrol patterns and quest and mission difficulties are skewed (I won't go into detail here, but try completing newb cantha with only henchies... you'll see what I mean).
I realise a certain degree of this is the fault of the community and all the elitism, but AN could have resisted that if they had so chosen. It's hard to keep a game "casual" when you offer hundreds of thousands of dollars in prize money for winning.
OK, I got that off my chest. I feel better now. And as I have sat here griping, I came up with an idea that could help alleviate the situation, so my Ranting was semi-productive at least.
Here's the idea: Make more than one ladder. One ladder could be the "official tournament" ladder, and the other(s) could be "casual" (for lack of a better term ATM). Guilds could select whether they wanted to compete with the big boys, or keep it more along the lines of the original game concept.
If you made it this far down, Kudos and thanks. That's all I have for now.

All players in GW are not equal in skill, thats why you have to practice allot to be better than them.

HA is barely PvP now, any gimmick user can get his bambi/wolf/tiger or w/e easy. TA is higher skill than HA will ever be.

Most of PvE has become stupidly easy, and is perfectly suited to the casual gamer, thanks to ANET bringing in PvE skills and w/e.

Elitism =/= not wanting to play with bad players or players that person have never met and wanting to play with good players you know and have played with before.

They are offering prize money and all that crap as an incentive for people to still PvP; after all PvP in GW is slowly dying after numerous screw ups by ANET.

If your continually playing against/beating bad players, then your not going to get really better, part of GvG is about losing to better guilds - learning from your mistakes and adapting. Your idea would be counter-productive and not help new PvPers at all.

I'm a casual player (or at least at the moment).
And I don't find PvE or Lucker PvP (TA, RA, AB's) not that hard.
I've yet to find obstacles which I can't overcome. Although it is true PvE/PvP hasn't become easier (Nightfall was a vacation between 2 semi-hard campaign/expansion).
You just have to get used to the Trial&Error tactics if you ask me. Or try getting some more info before going into new area.
On PvP I can't comment that much ... Very few experience outside AB's, TA's and RA's ... (and that's not officially recognised as PvP).
