Protect Your Computer

So, this afternoon, something odd happened on the forums, and some crazy link was spammed everywhere. I didn't click the link, but as I tell a couple people did. I heard reports of, screen just flashed off a browser window. Although this can seem harmless, it could also be very very bad. I just thought I would spend a couple moments to give some advice to some of the regular everyday computer users, because being a gamer doesnt always mean that your an expert on PC safety.

#1 most important thing is, Antivirus. If you dont have any, turn off your computer, the government is prolly watching you, because some dude in a trailer is buying C4 and routing his packets through your machine. There are tons of great products out there for AV. Some of the best are even free. I have found Kaspersky and CA to be my favorites, hands down. And both offer free 30-day fully functioning trials. But for those not willing to pay, the free ones AVG and Avast are also decent.

The other most important thing to note about AV software is that, the bigger most advertised are the worst. Being in the repair business, Norton's and Mcafee are my biggest money makers. They slow down computers, and miss alot of viruses, and that keeps me in business.

I urge anyone, especially those who clicked on Dru's link today, to do a quick free scan at http://housecall.antivirus.com

#2 is adware and spyware protection. Although some of the products I mentioned have awesome AV capabilities, nothing is really good as a stand alone solution for spyware protection and removal. I use a combination of freeware and shareware programs to clean systems. Most popular of these is Spy-Bot Search and Destroy and Ad-aware. Great programs, and fairly easy to use. Another great utility is a program called CCleaner, formerly Crap Cleaner.

#3 if you run everything I told ya, and still have junk on your machine, you can run a program called Hijack This, create a log of what the flip is going on your computer, and send me the log, and I will try and help.

Here's the links for every program I talked about:

Kaspersky
Computer Associates
Trend Micro Free Virus Scan
Avast
AVG
Spybot
Ad-Aware
CCleaner
Hijack This

Keep in mind, this info I am offering as free advice, and I will not be held legally liable if you use one of these programs and your computer implodes.

I will be creating brief tutorials on these programs for one of my clients, and if its cool with the forum admins, Ill post em here too.

Now that you mention it, I feel like sueing you.... :P
But naw, I think people around here know better than to go legal on your arse, so no worries about that. :)

Can't say for the bigbadboss, but I think the tutorials seem like a good idea. Especially now. ^^
