For school, my latest assignment is to take a photograph of 'Power'. I was wondering what you guys think says 'power' the most.

Power is kinda tricky to photograph, maybe Lightning/Thunder, Waves or something nature related like that?

Whatever you think says power the most. Doesn't need to be a picture but you can say a photograph that you would think is power.

I dunno, Power can be seen as everything, from being the Boss of a company to just having huge muscles :P
I myself if i'd have th choose a picture, you'd be looking at those military display pictures, where one leads hundreds of thousands of soldiers, thats what i believe is a display of pure power, the power to lead and conquer.
Im not saying anything here about any faction in history, but if theres something i see as true power, its Leadership and the power to gather immense support through & through.

Huh?
Oh wait, it's the age of the 'user let-the-camera-do-the-thinking friendly' Digital Cameras...
It's quite easy at night on an 'old' mirror/reflex camera if you put it on a tripod, point it at the storm, open the shutter and let the lightning photograph itself...
Lessee, the cliché symbol of power of the twentieth century was the full metal jacket. Twenty-first century it's probably a barrel of oil. Or maybe a '747, but that might be a bit crass. Ehm, Knowledge or Information is Power. Bit abstract though. If you can come up with a good way of representing that, you'd get high marks though I think.

i think that freedom is power. the power to defend your freedom or simply the power that comes with freedom.
i do free running so for me power is my ability to go almost anywhere and do almost anything.

Not really, but if there isn't a storm and hasn't been a storm for a while than I can't photograph it.
Trusting the camera is a bad idea anyway, they like to lie to you :P

I'd take a picture of something very tall, imposing, and big (maybe a large building, or tree, or something of that nature), from a very low perspective. Maybe put in something small in the foreground for scale. And make sure that the part of whatever you are photographing that is near the ground is in focus.

Depends on what you want, if you want something very physical you could ofc just go with a pair of big abs, but if you want something abstract I'd like to provide some suggestions ^^
- A naked man (or woman). Is not Man himself the inventor of Power?
- A graveyard. No power will ever defeat Death
- A picture divided in the middle between Hitler and Gandhi
The only ones I could think of atm, I tend to just think up nonsense most of the time. ^^
Good luck with your project, and I must say it sounds like you've got some very fun tasks on your school.

looking at it through the motorist stand point, power could be:
1. a tough looking sports car, like a mustang
2. bicker riding a harley or something
3. monster truck
4. an 18 wheeler
could list more, but this is all i can think of atm.

Although perhaps a bit odd at first, its with the right pictures indeed a display of power, its a nice contrast between ''good'' & ''evil''
Though ofcourse, every person makes up his or her mind the definition of what evil truly is, or good for that matter.
But yeah, that's kind off what i had in mind as a picture, if you could photoshop it nicely with a blurred midline it really would show the power of Leadership.
Money is power aswell, you can basicly buy everything with it. Though perhaps its a bit unreal to display, as no-one has it in infinite amounts.
Energy is power yes, but perhaps a bit farfetch'd, as 100 years back Power was existing already, but not in the exact widespread form of Electricity.
Death is Power, though perhaps it can be seen as a more ''neutral'' power, as its always present, but doesnt exactly rule our lifes completely from day to day.
However, the power to cause death upon another, is an example of Death, but perhaps in a different form then just a resting place for the dead.
Oil is Modern day power, and it rules many things in our lifes even without knowing, without it cars would not drive, plastic would not exist and so on, though still, i find it being a lesser form of Power as once again, when there where no cars, no tanks, and no plastic, Power existed.
Still, each has its own pro's and con's as a power, i cant really judge anything.

Dunno if it's far-fetched or not. I mean does the assignment mean power as in (political/physical/social) might or power as in the means to propel things, the physics definition. Electricity fits the latter, and to some extend the former.
Dunno how Freedom equates to Power though.
Neal Stephenson makes a pretty good argument that in order to be truly free one needs to be powerless in his Chronicles of Thomas Covenant if anyone's read that? Besides that, for absolute freedom you'd need absolute loneliness and that implies there's no-one to enforce power on/for.
Oh, and Death as power? As it's the great equalizer of both the Mighty and the Meek, maybe. I tend to see it as a negator of power than an enforcer though.

Stricly speaking if we are to discuss "Power" in a sociologic matter, for there to be power you need to have two different participants, or a relationship. One cannot say that a person has "power" if he's got no-one to inflict it on. For there to be power, you also need to specify and add a second part, which will be influenced with that power. Whetever that is a rock or a human doesn't matter, you are inflicting and showing your force of power by either throwing the rock, hitting the guy, and etc.
So we've established that you need a receiver for there to be power, someone you can influence (or someone/something that can influence you). I'd like to quote Michel Foucault though, he's hitting the nail when he says that "Power is everywhere...because it comes from everywhere."
Power is, essentially, our ability to interact with other persons or things. It is in every decision, and in every outcome. Power is closely related to our ability as humans to make choices, since power is something you choose to use. Power doesn't use you, it's always the other way around. Power is in my opinion, a vital part of choices. We use power to enact our choices, no power would mean no choices being executed.
To relate back to Foucault, if you want to use power in it¨s broadest sense, take a picture of the entire universe (or at least a sketch of it..)
