GW passes the 5mil mark

http://www.tgdaily.com/content/view/36234/98/

QUOTE

Bellevue (WA) - Blizzard's 800-pound gorilla World of Warcraft isn’t the only relevant game in the MMORPG genre.

We were told by NCsoft and ArenaNet that worldwide sales of the Guild Wars franchise recently surpassed five million units. To be fair, we have to note that this number does not mean that there are five million Guild Wars gamers in the world. It is simply an indication how many game boxes of the franchise have sold so far. This includes the original Guild Wars game, as well as expansions such as Factions, Nightfall and Eye of the North. Looks to us like a decent run-up to the release of Guild Wars 2, a title that is expected to hit the market in late 2008 or early 2009.

Apparently, PC gaming isn’t dying, but is evolving from single-player scenarios into huge virtual communities. The two most popular titles alone attract an audience of 15 million gamers these days.

the number might be a little less but 5mil is impressive.

this line made my day:

Wasn't the WoW around 8mill?

Really nice to see GW almost beating that crap game! =)

I so miss playing gw, but i really am not into that with the comp i have atm. Been almost 6 months now.. still hanging on the forum though. :p

Prolly going for a job to get new comp for GW2 as my parents stated they're not going to pay for a new comp anymore. :/

Yeah, but i think for WoW it was actual activated accounts, Anet counted using Bought Campaigns, not actual activated/existing accounts. :P

Don't want to break any dreams here, but as you can see, its per sold campaign, remember that most have several campaigns per account, so roughly said maybe tops 2- 2 1/2 Million Players in Guild Wars ^^

RE: GW passes the 5mil mark

If memory serves, the 3 million mark was reached shortly after the release of Factions. Meaning the last 2 million consists of Nightfall sales, the tail end of the Factions sale, plus late comers. These days I still see Prophecies in the stores, but not the other two campaigns.

Overall I'd guess about 800.000 to 1.200.000 active players, worldwide. I'm counting 1 person with 3 accounts as 1 active player. "Active" is a bit of a difficult term here as with other games you can simply go with who paid for their subion. With GW, it's a lot easier to come back for a bit.

Wow, by comparison has 9 million active subscribers, according to Blizzard, 5.5 of which are EU/US subscribers together.

That number actually comes across as rather low to me. Perhaps I'm misreading it, I'm reading it as the 5 Million covers the purchases of Guild Wars and its expansions.

I'm sure the average guild wars player owns at least 2 of the game/its expansion. While most players probably have 3 or all 4.

This would mean that the actual GW community is probably made up of less than 2 million players world wide. Don't get me wrong, selling a million copies of any game is in absolutely no way considered a failure...but I had thought GW was bigger than that.

RE: GW passes the 5mil mark

I hope the boom hasn't even started yet, i know 2005 was an explosion, 2006 was still good, but end of 2006 and 2007 the game "died" to some people. Im just hoping GW gets a second wind and climbs to be like WoW (in player size) where you mention the name guildwars in RL and lots of ppl jump on you asking what you play as and your IGN and lets group togther, like the way when you mention WoW today in RL. And I am not bashing WoW, but i would like to see revenge. When ever i ask any WoW player that plays WoW alot and has at least played gw or seen gw, they always come up with the 2 famous words "it sucks" for no reason and stuff like: "it sucks lvl 20, 8 skills no jump/swim" WoW is a good game but i want some of those smug players to suffer, so heres my shout out!

I hope GW2 Reachs over the pop of WoW, and beats Wow into the ground over and over and over and i get to do a fun "up yours" at all the little smug wow players. As i feel my victory is fulfilled... How dramatic i am, :) Whoot.

If you arent a smug little wow player dont get offended by my post above, if your not smug then that had nothing to do with you.

RE: GW passes the 5mil mark

I understand what you mean Chris, and there is a big chance, Considering i heard GW2 will not come with monthly fees, and we already heard the *rumors* of predicted plans, it will feature alot of things that made other succesfull MMO's ''WIN''

But for the ''classic'' GW? Dont expect anything, you can expect a second wind, as it goes cheaper and cheaper in stores, meaning many will go for a try out. But the game just lacks that punch to actually be inviting to many.

Most ex-WoW'ers dont like the grind aspect, but they do often tell me that they miss the ''free'' feeling as you can have in WoW, maybe GW2 will have that, but thats then, for now, dont expect it to go sky high in popularity.

RE: GW passes the 5mil mark

Nasty truth is:

Even if the campaigns has been sold millions, that doesn't mean that GW gets more players. To be honest, because quite many of GW players are students of some sort, they have to "quit" GW for some time to get their IRL back to trails and prolly after that they won't get back to play because of what it did to them. It'll count the numbers down a lot, not up. Why? Addiction is nasty thing to be real when it happens to you.

Still, even if students drop out, there's always new players around. Many of them just get Proph + EotN, or Proph + NF + EotN. Factions wasn't so good as ppl hoped and I think that's the reason for it's "unpopularity".

Revenge isn't redress, it's a wheel, turning backwards.

I guess school's a bit different from the workplace.
I think one in ten of the people I meet even plays MMOG's, half of those will be playing either GW or WOW and the rest one of the tons of other MMOGs. A lot of LotrO in my company actually.
The people I know who do play WOW all play on different servers, except for the RPers who're all in the same guild even. Guess being of a school age allows for a bigger server transfer budget than being employed. Go figure :-)

RE: GW passes the 5mil mark

5 mill items sold,

most people got more chapters (Prop fac NF eotn) so that would reduce the amount of players big time.. and some people even got 2 accounts. so it aint even close to 5 mil players
