| So I just bought the Orange Box... |

This is f***ing outrageous. I'll cut to the chase and inform you straight away that I can't play TF2 online straight out of the box for my account having been 'banned by VAC' or whatever the f*** that is.
Now I've had this steam account for a good three years since I bought Half Life 2 - and played ONLY Half Life 2 with it - and it's been collecting dust and neglect for well over a year, likely two. After hearing all the praise for Portal and TF2 I just couldn't resist, they looked so damn fun!
Portal was a blast, finished it in a measly 2 hours though. I didn't bother installing HL2 or its expansions; I'm not really that interested in it. So I start up TF2 and find a good local server to give it a go on - but what's this? VAC ban? DO NOT F***ING WANT.
So apparently in the two years I haven't USED my steam account for anything at all, I had my steam account 'banned for a cheating infraction'. Okay valve, that's a fairly strong claim against someone that's never played a steam game online in his lifetime. I didn't even INSTALL CS:S or HL2:DM.
So I jump on the Steam Support page and take a look through some of the pages on there in hope of answers, possibly who to contact to resolve this. Wishful thinking Kikuta, but you just wasted $100 AU (thats $95 US) on Portal. Apparently valve will never lift the ban on my account, and that it's my own fault.
Regardless, I've sent a support ticket that I'll have to wait until the weekend is over for a bloody response - more than likely some half-wit telling me to read the 'frequently asked questions' page again. I'll be asking for a full refund if I don't get this shit sorted out, I think they'll prefer to just unban my damn account instead.
But this is what shits me the most: VAC bans your entire account from playing on any VAC secured servers on VAC secured game. You'd think they'd administer the ban to be only effective on the game you've been banned for whatever infraction, not every single f***ing game you've spent god-knows how much money on over the space of god-knows how long you've had your f***ing account! But hey, on the bright side at least I can still play the singleplayer portion of TF2! <_<
If EB don't accept returns for the Orange Box I'm going to go off my f***ing chops.

That sucks.... i hate steam, steam is a d*** and it sucks. I really hope you can get this sorted out, but if you can't through support e-mail's then you need to get person to person or phone call contact to the main head honcho and explain yourself very well. There had to be some sort of mixup, unless they saw your account was inactive so long they banned it for fun or were testing some experimental ban on it or something thinking you were never comming back.

EB won't take it and honestly you can't get mad at them for it. There's no way anyone can accept a return on a PC game that requires a unique CD Key. Sorry man, tough turn of events but in all reality there is probably little they can do about it.

The CR*P THING is that he got VAC banned for cheating, which he didn't. Getting banned for something you didn't do is crap. Seriously. If you did cheat, well then, i can say that sv_cheats 1 isn't cheating. TF2 is indeed fun, and i hope you get your dusty account unbanned. Valve will probably not do it, as it involves digging out a 2 year random ban record, which is probably deleted by now. The reason for the ban might be lost, and if so, Valve will simply say:sorryplzgivusmoarmunnyyoubuyanewsteamaccountkthxbai.
Sad huh?

Aye, it is totally fair that they don't accept the returns for online games. In fact, when I bought the OB off them the first copy they gave me had a CD Key that was already in use! Of course they replaced it, but hey.
And an update on the situation: I am about to lose my f***ing mind.
Since I tried playing TF2 online, ALL games contained in the Orange Box are now running at god-awful frame-rates. Something has just snapped and now even Portal is just lagging like all hell has broken loose. It was running perfectly the day before and now it's just F***ED! I can't beleive this. I can't play ANY of the games I bought now! AND I CAN'T GET A F***ING REFUND FOR IT EITHER!
If the fates don't hate me entirely, my mate that works at EB will be able to turn a blind eye and give me the refund...

wow man, that really sucks. I've used steam for awhile now, and I really haven't had any problems w/it. I think it's a little anoying, specially since it takes up like 34gb+ of my comp (course, i hardly ever use it so i moved it to my ipod, lol), but i never heard of anything like that happening. Course if it is a mistake, valve/vac should be able to take care of it...

If what you say is true, try complaining on a Steam related forum.
All my experiences with Steam have been good ones, it's just some people think of the old Steam from years ago that wouldn't let them install HL2 when it first came out.
If no one else knows your password then you could easily get un-vac-banned but if someone hacked your account and got it banned you'd be screwed over just like you would in Guild Wars.

That's encouraging. I'm certain no-one else knew the password (which I've changed now). I'll be overjoyed if they lift the ban, but do you think if I plead my case well enough they would be able to even transfer the Orange Box key to a new account? Surely they will understand my innocence and at least move the key, not having to un-ban the account...

I doubt they would move the Orange Box to a whole new account without going through a whole bunch of "Send us pictures of your barcode, receipt etc."
It'll be easier unbanning the account, just tell them that you haven't used it in 2 years so how could you be banned for cheating/hacking.
Also tell them that no one else knows your password otherwise you'llut get a reply saying "Does your little brother know your password?" or somehting similar.

Yep, will do. Here's hoping they reply on monday!
If they offer to move it to a new account, I always keep receipts for games so it shouldn't be a problem :)
