I'm making Ranger as my secondary prof for the IAS and IMS abilities, but one thing that I was wondering about was Charm Animal...
Just how much use can/do assassins make out of having a pet to tag along with them? Or should I just slip it into my spellbook and let it collect dust?

IT is a waste of 2 skill slots. There are such better skills for those 2 slots( 2 slots i mean charm animal and comfort animal) HOw much damage does a pet really do with out skills. I say absolutly not.

If I were you, I wouldn't take a pet and I have several reasons for it
1) Assassins are not "supposed" to have pet
2) it's rather useless since it doesn't deal a lot of damage unless you invest points beast mastery, but I think you need your points for other, more usefull attributes.
3) it uses skill slots and since you said you wanted IAS and IMS,you probably allready have 2 skills, if you add a rez signet, and then also charm animal and that pet rez skill (dunno what it's called :P), then you have only 3 more slots left.
4) IF you wanted to have a character with a pet and a pet- build, you should have made a ranger
5) if you bring hero/hench monks, they waste their energy on healing your pet.
6) and last and most important reason, if your pet dies, your skills are disabled for like 4 seconds or so, which is extremely annoying, since assassins rely heavily on their attack-skills, especially when you're in the middle of an attack chain.
I hope this helped you out and I hope you make the right decision.

There really doesn't seem much that a sin can do with a pet, as said before it'll cost you 2 slots plus another for the pet skill you want & if you include a res that's half your bar gone leaving you 4 slots for your own chain, heal and defense.
While a Ranger can handle this I've never had much luck doing it with a Sin, maybe others have but it's not terribly efficient.
My current build is A/R Crit Barrager & imo is great fun to play!
