| Retrieving registry from backed up HDD. |
|
|
|
I backed up one of my hard drives to an external one before I had it formatted.
Is there some way to open up the registry from the external drive, using regedit or anything? It's namely to recover my old CoD4 CD key from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Activision/CoD4

i don't know for sure what you mean, but i can atleast try :D
make a new txt document with notepad, now the most important part, name the file; ilikeapples
then open that .txt file and write:
Start command
then save it as a .BAT file, so just write .bat after the filename and save it.
now run that ilikeapples.bat file and simply typ in; regedit
(i'm sure there's an easier way, but hey, i'm special ^^)

First check if you actually really backed the registry files up. Since they're locked when windows is running this may not be the case. They ought to be in:
$:\windows\system32\config\system
$:\windows\system32\config\software
$:\windows\system32\config\sam
$:\windows\system32\config\security
$:\windows\system32\config\default
Where $ is your external drive.
I suspect your key to be in software.
The second part is tougher.
You need a regeditor that will take paths.
Eh what? Well, regedit that comes with Windows will automatically load in all the registry files in the path C:\windows\system32\config\ and I don't think you can tell it to look elsewhere on startup. I'd not recommend trying what "Import" does either.
So you either need a 3rd party registry-tool that will allow you to open registry files in another location than C:\windows (and doesn't save to that location either), or find a generic text editor that will open the files.

Just move to the proper reg key.

Which would work if it concerned the Active Registry of the current installation of Windows, not the one on an external disk as is the case here.
A for effort.

Thanks Lani you helped a lot. I went against your advice and imported the software file. I selected CoD4 before pressing import so it asked me if I wanted to paste over it so I selected yes and it pasted my cod4key CD-key and it's all good :)
Thanks.

Easier to do it first then reformat. :) Maybe I forgot to type that. oops.. Even so.. Even after formating.. unless he did a Full Destructive Format... it may still be there.
I know a lot of stuff in the registry remains when I reformat unless I do a full format.
F- for giving grades on a forum. :)
