I do a cursed lands farm. Secondary profession doesn't really matter, but I've chosen Warrior on mine, because I'm usually at melee range, and it will give me an extra point or 2 of damage, now and them.

I've been farming with my monk for over two years, so I don't see that. In fact I would say the most common farming builds are either assassin primary or secondary.
Now, for your question. Generally, a monk in team play doesn't use smite. There are some exceptions, mostly in undead heavy areas like the shards of Orr. For pve monking, usually the secondary doesn't matter beause if healing, most to all of your skills are heal, and any others are protection. You can use mesmer for hex removal/every management.
For farming, the most common is 55 monking, using dervish secondary for mystic regen. No, it's not as strong as it was, but when used with SoA and Shielding hands, it can keep up with the degen, and you take no damage.
Currently another popular team concept is the 600/smiter. Mesmer secondary for the 600 and necro for the smiter.
If you want to see any monk farming builds or see them in use, feel free to pm me. IGN - Faith Pilearstad

Yea don't use a smiting monk in pve unless your farming. Pretty much any other class can do damage better. But no class can heal or protect as well as a monk can, Focus on the strong points.

Smiting monks in PvE are awesome.
Mo/Rt
10 channeling
14 smiting
rest in divine favor, something like 6-8
Reversal of Damage
Smite Hex
Smite Condition
Spear of Light
Ancestors Rage
Splinter Weapon
any decent elite from smiting line
some other awesome skill
I forgot what I used, but at one point I wanted basically a damage and buff bot, and this is almost as good as a MM in the party if you have a warrior to spam splinter on.
the two extra skills could be some form of energy management.
But that's for teamplay, monk farming is different.

Mesmer
to explain, most smiting will usually end up being signets or shield of judgement, this is of course if you stray from the tried and trusted methods of farming (55 and 600 hp monks)
signets can be powered with maantra of inions for better recharge time
shield of judgement coupled with arcane echo and blessed aura (+ enchantment duration) means you'll almost always have it up.
interesting idea for a team build
first let the entire party know you're not a healer
then use
Mantra of inions (30-40% faster recharge mesmer, inpiration magic)
blessed signet (energy gain)
retribution (on as many people as you can)
bane signet/smite hex
castigation signet/smite condition
strength of honor (for melee attackers only)
signet of judgement
rez of choice
its so far out there it might work, or just blow up in your face
the later if you want to help the party stay alive

There's an alternative ritualist smiter that I like.
Strength of Honor
Judges Insight
Offering of Spirit (E)
Bloodsong
Splinter Weapon
Ancestors Rage
Smite Hex
Smite Condition
10 channeling
breakpoint above 9 for smiting, rest in whatever attrib Offering of Spirit is under.

My monk messes around with a supportive smite build in PvE.
Its a welcome change to healing or protection.
Put all your points in smiting and divine favor.
Reversal of damage
Smite condition
Smite hex
Blessed light (E)
Castigation signet
Judges insight (don't use this on yourself :-p)
Smiters boon
a res of choice
With smiters boon on, you can heal quite a bit while preventing damage with reversal and removing hexes/conditions. for big heals there's Blessed Light, just don't spam it.
It's not the best build I've ever made but it works in PvE.
Have'nt tried it in PvP though I have a slight feeling it won't do so well ;-).

Offering of Spirit is under channeling, so attributes would be:
14 Channeling (12+1+1)
12 Smiting
