You don't get the joke, you perhaps haven't seen 300, in there, the only thing the Spartans wear is a cape and a cloth, that's it, also, lots of waxed abs.

Oh don't worry. I know 300 is a joke. Mostly on its audience :-)
Oh and the leather straps kilts didn't survive the 2400+ years since the battle at Thermopylae, hence they're missing from the set shown.

lol @ the pic, nice job, make one with no armor, an aegis, and a paragon spear (spiraling is narrow or a darksong spear), red guild cape, 1.5k glad gauntlets, 15k glad boots, and a 15k glad skirt... again, no top... then you'll have it about as close as you can get ;)
to anyone thinking that 300 is accurate, c'mon, lol, it's Frank Miller! though i do own the movie and a fully functioning spartan '300' sword the movie is just that.
they based the armor off of the statue of leonidas that's in sparta to this day:
they actually wore bronze armor like what lani posted, etc, and the actual casualites that they caused were indeed at the 'hot gates' but not anything like what the movie depicted, they more or less used guerilla tactics as the enemy filtered through the narrow passageway. and the numbers of greek figthers was more acurately claimed at just over 4000, not 300! lol...

viking vs. spartan (greek hoplite) that easily goes to the greek's as a whole unit. greek's had much better structure and formations than vikings did. (same with romans: eg: why the roman's steam rolled 'barbarians' (which later turned into vikings) so easily)
1 vs. 1, that greatly depends on the fighter, based on the crude training of a viking (basically none compared to a hoplite or a roman soldier), where it was simply strength over any sort of tact, i'd need to pick the hoplite, i don't care how strong a viking is, swinging one of their swords repeatedly is a daunting task, even for me.
they did an interesting documentary on sword fighting on the discovery channel, they had two men go at it with stage swords (unedged), the one swinging a Claymore and in viking style chain armor (midevil), the other with a gladius and a round shield and roman-style armor. the chap with the claymore tired out after about 2 minutes of fighting one guy, who was just in a defensive stance, perrying and blocking, after the guy with the claymore could barely swing it anymore, the other chap just moved in, smacked him with the shield and 'ran' him through as acurately as possible.
the middleages style soldier was just sweating bullets like mad. i'll try to find it on youtube, but yea, both these guys were bigger and fit.
also remember, that viking's were really documented around 6th-7th century, whereas spartans and greek were ancient, BC times 700-600BC, 1000 years before vikings, and still had better tactics, particularly if you compare the difference in time! edit: i know viking's have been around longer, but based on documented history and tactics, they still used very crude tactics by comparrison 1000 years after unit fighting was created.
so, yea, i need to side with the ancient warriors over a viking, though personally i think a samurai would whip both a viking and a hoplite, that's just me. lol. ;) (that's 1 v 1)

tee-hee, i actually am working on a Katana, i aquired a folded steel blank from japan and am going to make my own handle and balance it to my liking and style preference (i hate dragons and the standard decorations and wraps that are on most oriental swords) ;)
then i'll hit a few select things with it to make sure it works and put it on display with my other blades. *grin*

edit: you cannot swing a katana like other swords, you'll break it. lol, so if anyone ever wants to get one and use it, buy one of those fake-wood ones then buy a 'how to' book or video on how to wield a katana properly...
i broke one from being an idiot and folded ones are expensive.

Come on Silly, you know as well as I do that if it's a dirty term it's bound to be British. Scratch an Englishman and you find a priate. Be proud of it man. :-)
Oh and for the interested Battle of Thermopylae at wikipedia, with Greek army estimates of between 3 and 6 thousand, including a 300 man honour guard of Spartans, who may or may not have been part of the overal Lakedeamonian army (Lakedeamonia was the Spartan nation folks)
