| All gfx effects are gone! |
|
|
|
Yesterday I logged in to the game like I do everyday. And all looked well. I said hihi to eveybody, and joined lani/Char for some wailer fun. But when I switched on my invulnerability shields I didn't get the greens glows, sparkles, anything. Then Char started to throw on the fire shields and I only got the rocks floating around me, not the actual fire. I had not changed any settings, but it looked like I had been put in some sort of graphics safe mode. I tried to play with the settings, but nothing seemed to help. The game played fine otherwise, so we went on, but I didn't see any of the fire attacks that Char blasted. The whole game was just not as fun.
Do any of you have seen or heard something like this before? Or perhaps have some idea what I could try to get my gfx effects back? Is there actually such a thing as safe mode?

There is such a thing as "Safe Mode" that brings down your graphics to crap. You might have switched it on when you got to the "I agree" part of the shortcut clicking, as it is right next to the button that says "I agree." Just uncheck the box and it should go back to normal.
But other than that, I'm clueless.
Edit: You might have put your GFX graphics to the lowest. So you might want to check that out.

I can't check right now, but I believe that there's a setting in the advanced graphics or something that will return you to the default graphic settings or optimal graphic settings. Something like that.
Use that and then tweak from there if you need to.
If that doesn't resolve it, there could be a glitch in your graphics drivers, update them.
EDIT: AFTERTHOUGHT: Did you try simply rebooting your system?

I logged in once to find my character's feet sticking out of the middle of his back. In fact, when I quit to the login screen, I found that all my character's feet were sticking out of the middle of their backs!
After a log out and re-boot it was all better... Hopefully this, or the other suggestions above will clear up the problem.
However, on the topic of messed up graphics, I have had a problem from day one, and no one seems to want to answer my pleas for help!
The water in the game does not look like water. It reflects an image of the first thing I saw at the time I logged or zoned in. This happens all the time, no matter where I am, or what water I am looking at.
I have gotten used to it, but it is still really irritating. In fact, the webbing between the struts of my Tech-Wings disappears when I look past my character at water.
No graphics settings seem to help this phenomena, and my computer's graphics abilities are very good. Any ideas? Anyone else ever have this happen?

It sounds like particle effects have been set to zero, or the drop effects when camera's close to avatar setting has gone always on.
Hmm, could we (I) get the following?:
- Comparison pics. Before / After
- Also, a DXdiag dump would be nice (would like that anyway for that other USB related issue)
- And, did you (or Microsoft or NCSoft)update anything prior to the loss of effects.
- Also nice would be your current settings. I really wish CoX had a config file for that, would be sooo much easier to trouble shoot stuff then.
In closing, I know it's not the thing to do these days, but did you as NC Support about it? Might be they've seen this before, or not as the case may be.
Edit: There's a safe-mode option in the launcher (The old one, not PlayNC's) where you see the update stuff.

Thanks for all the suggestions! When I came home from work today I went through all the tricks. I updated my video drivers, verified all COH files, and made sure the safe box was not ticked. I don't know what was the problem yesterday, but after all that I had my graphics back. Although I seemed it was a bit more laggy than before. So I lowered two settings (particle effects from 50,000 to 25,000 and something else from very high to high), and then everything seemed quite happy. I still think my PC is slowly dieing. It is over 3 years old now, and I think it is time for something new.
Oh, and welcome to GameAmp, Wyloc! I have no idea about the water effects. Very weird, but kind of neat too.

ATI radeon 9X00 series videocard by any chance?
I had this exact problem with the 9800 Pro. Basically it didn't do some post-processing. This was in the time when ice wasn't showing in the Frostfire Mission as well. There was this quality setting for reflections that you could lower to minimal as I recall. This didn't make it pretty, but atleast not the weird effects. I don't recall if the X1600 I had for a bit had the same issue, I think not, but I ended up moving to to a pc with a Nvidia 7950 GS in it and that fixed 9 out of 10 Gfx issues I ever had.

Now that you mention graphic problems. Has anyone else had a problem with costumes for their Masterminds minions? I have noticed lately that my Thugs when Upgraded do not display the proper costume pieces. I usually have to hit the Bruiser twice to make it apply.
*RE: Glad to here you got your problem fixed Phe! Now maybe you can tell if it is your video card, or Lani is just holding out on you with the Fire Shields. :P

You HIT your minions and you're surprised they're not showing the desired alacrity? Try honey instead of vinegar sometime :-)
Seriously, update issue. probably Network related. Don't play while the wife's on as well and it might not happen then.
Or get her her own DSL connection ;-)

Yeah, I'm still running a 9800 Pro so I had that problem as well (Can't wait till I get my new Laptop for college. That thing is going to be amazing compared to this 3+ year old piece of junk.) I just lowered my water effects settings and it doesn't happen anymore. I wouldn't be surprised if Wyloc (Unwelcome btw) has a 9800 Pro too. If that's the case then I can confirm that just lowering the "water effects" settings is the way to go.
And yeah, yay for Phedre and teh power of teh reboot. So say we all.

As to the messed up water reflections, or rather lack of any real water effects...
I have an ATI RADEON X 1950 XTX 512mb GDDR4 video card. It probably is some slight bit of incompatibility that messes up the water's effect.
The only other problem I ever had with this card is that I had to upgrade my power supply to get enough juice to it, and the darn thing takes up 2 bay slots, so I had to take out the aether-net card. Luckly I can get by just fine on wi-fi connections :) hehe. The darn thing is BIG!

The X1950 XTX is a very decent card and no mistake. I think the issue lies with CoX's favor towards nVidia cards.
Find that reflection setting, tone it down and you should be rid of the weird effects. Water will look like sludge rather than water but in the sewers that'll be somewhat more immersive :-)
Oh and it's just ethernet, not aether :-)

It is tattooed on my forehead...
:)
Lets see, I see it alot in books I read. although I dont read as much fantasy now-a-days. For some reason the phrase/name "AEther Fox" springs to mind, but I also cant remember what it is . Ok, I cant be really really specific. My brain doesnt work that way.
I think the last time I remember seeing it was in a theoretical physics paper regarding the wave theory of light. aether is the term that is used to describe the theoretical medium through which light waves are transmitted. It isnt a very good theory, and not widely held, but it is an attempt to explain the wave / particle duality of light. Better theories explain light's odd behavior via multi-dimensional aspects of space-time. I believe that so called 'string theory' also attempts to explain the behavior of light, but 'string theory' really can not be called a proper scientific theory as it is fundamentally untestable.
Seems like I may have also seen it recently replaying the old Final Fantasy games on the Playstation. But I may be misremembering there.

I know this was an issue i noticed a long time ago and thought it was fixed....
The issue I was seeing was in how you upgraded the henchmen. If you did the 2nd upgrade first, then the 1st upgrade, they wouldn't upgrade properly and forced you to hit the 2nd upgrade again.
So, just do them in order and the full upgrade will take effect. Oh, and give it about a couple seconds between the upgrades. Haven't played the Thugs in a while and when i did, I forgot to check to see if that little quandry was fixed.

ok, now I know my brain is going. Yes, Aether Storm, and other Magic: The Gathering cards... duh! *bonks forehead*
It has been years since I last played. Still have my collection though, about 25,000 cards at last estimate. That must be the source of the residual traces of spelling!
Shoot, I even had a total non-creature, anti-creature, deck built around Aether Storm cards. Ohh, it was wicked! Sure annoyed my buddy when he pulled out his all creature goblin deck! hehhe
And, Aetherfox is one of the fonts I used in a game I designed. I knew that one sounded familiar too! I design and self-publish board games on the side. Actually, one game is more a Magic style card game, but where everyone draws from the same 5 decks, and it is Sci-Fi based. Someday I might even finish the website for it, and get around to selling a few copies! hahaha

Also, according to the readme it's "e-mailware; that is, if you like it, please e-mail the author at: [ the guy's e-mail address ]"
And yes, it is a very nice font.
And yeah, if you're willing to dig out your old cards and throw a deck together I'm up for a game anytime. It never hurts to have too many dueling buddies. ^.^
Edit: Your collection must be from the golden days man, cause Aether storm last came out in Fifth. I'm scared you might have a few moxes and lotuses (loti???) waiting in the wings lol.

Sweet. I don't know about flying all the way to Nebraska, but if you've got some kind of IM I'd be happy to play you online. That's usually where my friend and I do most of our dueling.
And don't get too worried about getting off topic. Everyone's problems have been solved and on top of that we're villains. If we can't break the rules every now and then we might as well stay on the blue side. ^.^

Hmm, Ive never played over IM before. But I bet it could be done. The only truble I see is not being able to remember what all cards you had out, and what they do. Especially any new cards (more new than a couple years ago) as I wouldnt have a clue. Shoot, I still use Ice Age and Forth Edition cards!
