I must say considering you havn't used it before you did a good job on the cropping but overall the image kinda looks a bit flat =) The real photoshop works comes in when you start to create your own images from scratch though, rather than just combining images. (Obviously no ones expecting you to do that on your first time xD)

Leppis, a handy tip for you that can make a world of difference:
When working with layers, such as your last one with the overly white flags, select the layer, then go to:
Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation.
That way you can change color & brightness of a layer, so it can blend in more with the background, i discovered it relatively late in my photoshops and it really added a punch to things :)

Just expirement with it, making them darker often is better. Plus perhaps making them 90% transparancy instead of the default 100% also might work.

You have alot to learn. I advise to start messing around with the shape tools. From cutting to pasting. Also, try using the blur tool alot, after cutting out images like you did, using the tool and blurring the edges of the image makes for a better look.

At the first picture, you might want to lower the opacy from the dervish (that's just above your layer window), or you could choose filter > blur/blur more. This makes it a little less.. cut out =D

Bad excuse. Being Dutch you ought to know that should you ever run into someone carrying a scythe, odds are 99.5% in favor of it being a farmer, a 'boer'.

your doing great on your first time -Leppis. just keep it up. as time passes by, youll learn alot more. this is what i did when i got my photoshop and wanted to learn alot. i did tutorials. i always remember the steps one by one after because when im done, im usually interested on what i made. after that, i do more and more tutorials, remember more and more of what to do, then after, i combine those things i learned in tutorials and WALA! made your own thing! :D
take your time on it, dont rush it.

Lmao I know what a farmer is xD
I rather call it a dervish so everyone knows what I mean than talking about the-blue-guy-with-scythe-and-big-piece-of-cloak-on-his-head.
