So, I figure I would split up my babbly posts through out the network and you guys get the joy of my current one. I would like to appologize for any major typos before hand as my fingers are a bit sluggish due to the extreme cold and what not. The story begins...
If any of you didn't get a chance to see anything about the exteme weather we had in the Midwest US yesterday let me give a wee recap: There was rain... lots and lots and lots and lots of rain...
See I can recap short if need be *grin*. I'm located in Missouri and there was a state of emergancy declared yesterday actually due to all the flooding. Where I live there were about 50% of the streets closed due to flooding, and in the out skirting towns there were buildings under water. So needless to say it was quite wet here. The main street next to my house was one of those on the flooded lists actually. Of course I am at work during most of this, and I work until 10 PM my time. With all the closed streets I didn't make it home until almost 11 PM. When I got home I noticed something quite odd about the house... it was dark (very dark).
The Boyfriend greeted me at the door telling me he needed my help out back, and he needed it now. As I crutched (yes I'm still not walking due to a broken ankle) through the very dark house I noticed a few candles lighting the way. I was getting quite worried by this point. He led me out the back door and helped me down the 3 cement steps leading to our back yard (I haven't been down them on the crutches yet b/f this to be honest), he then walked over to the scary door leading to our very creepy basement. He threw it open and shined a flash light into the stairwell leading to the cellar... And then I saw it, the water that is. He used one of his legs to pry open the final door at the bottom of the stairs leading to the basement, and revealed to me around 3 1/2 feet of water covering the floor. He then handed me the phone and told me, "If you hear a splash, or me yell, you need to call 911" (he can be very encouraging at times). He then preceded to do what I can only call a "wall climb" into the basement (it was quite impressive actually), and after about 5 min he climbed back out.
He was apparently needed to get down there and turn off all the power that we had down there, so he could turn our main breaker back on up stiars. Thankfully he is a smart guy and around 7PM when the heat went off, he went down stairs to find out what was wrong with the furnace (a very old one by the way), and saw the water gathering and rising quickly. He killed the power b/c he didn't want a fire or what not to happen due to the electrical cords and what not that were plugged in down stairs, and was smart enough to wait for me to get home b/f taking that scary journey down there to get it shut off at the source. I'm quite happy he waited to be honest, coming home to a drowned boyfriend wouldn't be a good way to end a work day.
So we have been with out heat since last night, they say we are supposed to get snow today, but the good news is our drain down there really does rock, the rain stopped sometime early this morning, and the water is just about gone (yay for not having to remove the water w/ a pump!!!), but we hve to now let the furnace and gas lines dry out before we can get the heat going again.
So I sit here in my sweat pants, socks, t-shirt, and zip up sweater, shivering, trying to make myself get up and put on work clothes... I do know there is heat at work, I won't be cold all day, but getting myself there this morning (yes it is still morning to me!) isn't going to be a pleasant journey at all.
And um... I guess that ends my babbly post...

Great succinct second paragraph, third spoiled it a bit, but i love the babbling actually so don't mind. Kudo's to Transmission for prompt action, and you're so lucky your basement's draining. My parental home had this happen, then it started to freeze. Ended up with a condemned home due to structural issues with the foundation (i.e. the cellar's walls).
Still, being cold sucks.

Ouch, that stinks.
I know what it feels like to have a basement flooded, and it really stinks. Unfortunatly, I had my good computer down here, so it broke, and had to get it repaired. Good for you to have a smart person around the house.

Pfft, that sounds like my Tuesday morning routine. Please a spit of rain is nothing. You Missourians are wusses! Yeah I said it, W-U-S-S-E-S.
Well none less, I guess for the wusses it was a heroing tale. So you have electric but no electric downstairs because of the Noak like flood? Or are you posting from work "gasp" Im telling!

You think that is bad? (lots of stories start out with those words, but this one really is bad...)
A few years ago when I lived in Wisconsin, I owned a small 1 story house with an unfinished basement. The basement ceiling was only about 5 feet high, so I had to duck to go down there. As you can imagine, I didnt go down there very often...
So, one day after a shower, I hear splashes downstairs. Odd, what could that be? Why, it is a broken sewer pipe! Yay! My basement was flooded with about a foot of raw sewage (yes, not just shower water, but toilet backup too)
Imagine you are on a road trip and you need to go really bad, so you stop at some horrible little rest-stop in the middle of nowhere, and find that the last 5 people never flushed the toilet... Well this was about 1000x worse.
What a fun day. Calling in to work: "Boss, I cant come in today, there is a foot of sewage in my basement."

Well, we have heat now! *cheer* Now all we have to do is hope our water heater drys out so we can have hot water... ever wash long hair in nothing but cold water? Ever do it in the morning when you first wake up? I would NOT reccomend it to anyone. The heat is quite nice though. And we haven't had any house explosions or what not, so we are doing quite well right now.

Not with cold water no, but i do it with cold beer every now and then.
Not in the morning though, it tends to raise eyebrows at work if you do :-)

I can't imagine that beer would be good for your hair... and doesn't that smell kinda stick with you for a while when you do that?

Guess again. Ever notice those expensive shampoo's with natural wheat and/or barley extracts and such for extra health and shine?
I wouldn't recommend using the US Budweiser though, that's not beer, it's Pilsener.
And you do rinse after washing so the smell is faint and not unpleasant.

I have to say I've never used any of those expensive shampoo's... I tend to get the cheap $1 stuff (yay for sauve!), and just wash my hair two times, throw on the cheap conditioner, rinse really, really well, and I'm good to go. Hell, there are even some days that I actually brush it *grin* not today of course, today it just goes back into the bun to be forgotten about until I get home from work.
And any beer smell is unpleasant, well at least to me, never could find a beer that didn't make my stomach a bit queesy just from the smell of it (yes I've tried the imported stuff also). I think I'll just stick to the cheap shampoo *grin*

No, you have to wash your hair in Vodka.
It sucks not having hot water, my old apt always had water heater problems. Getting up in the morning and taking an ice cold shower is great way to start a crappy day. Hope your Basement dries out quick. Luckily I live in Michigan where the lakes slow down the bad storms 90% of the time, but that 10% it doesn't can be a doosy.

Oh I couldn't imagine washing anything other than my hair in the shower right now... I kinda leaned over the edge of the bath tub to make sure none of the rest of me would have to feel that icey stuff other than my hands and my head. I'm doing the super fun "heating water up on the stove for a suedo sponge bath" thingy.
I can imagine that the lakes there would be nice for holding rain, but in that pesky 10% time does it make the lakes flood which makes things even worse?

The great thing about the lake is most of the time it works like this: What ever amount of rain you get, we only half that. If the temp there is 25 it will be 40 here, and if its 95 there it will be 80 here. Now thats most of the time, but sometimes it reverses in heavy numbers. Sometimes when you get 3in of snow we will get 3ft, and if it does get really hot here it is also humid as all heck. So its a give take, every storm we get is a role of the dice. Yesterday it was 50 out and today its 34, they predict snow this weekend but in the 60's on Monday. I haven't been able to feel my finger tips all day.
