Yep was just curious to see how many people would leave behind CoH to go play Champions Online which will be cross platformed and stuff. I saw it in last months Gameinformer and it looked really good from the pictures and stuff and the whole idea that you can have your own archvillian and that you dont get stuck with just 1 or 2 sets of power sets but can have all of them. I've played CoH on and off for a few years and its getting pretty old even with all the new things being added. With the whole cross platforming thing I'm just guessing theres gonna be more players since this game has more to offer from what is being said. It sill has like a year to go, but I know I'm gonna get it ^_^ who's gonna join me?

Actually this game is a longer off than a year. Beta time normally takes a year if not longer (like some other games...Pirates of the Burning Seas, CoH itself...among others).
Sure the graphics look great but that is just because this game is coming out 4 years after CoH. Anything looks a little better compared to that. But you look at CoH now and 4 years later it is still one of the best looking games (graphics wise around). Take my word on it, ran at max settings this game has more oohs and aahs than you can imagine.
One thing I did notice about Champions is that it has some eerily similar powers to CoH. I find that almost funny that they are taking from a game that I would think want to separate themselves from. Dark tentacle powers? Sword wielding heroes?
Not holding my breath on this one till its released. Just like Marvel U Online tanked, until tis is out then we shall see how great it is suppose to be. I will remain a CoH'er forever but that doesnt mean I wont check it out. But sadly at this time looks like a very similar knock off to CoH with WoW loot.

I won't drop CoH for Champions, but I've already dropped WoW (again) so I have no issue with running 2 subions. Although who knows, by the time Champions comes out, the elusive Wrath of the Lich King should also be out...so WoW might win my happy back.

I probably will stay with my home, CoH, just because I like it, and they keep adding. And to point something out, you state you can pick your own powers and everything. This means there are going to be powers that are HORRIBLE and one certain selection of powers that is going to be the uber build that everyone has to take because its better for PvP or whatever.

I concur with Grif,
Champions looks like a CoH-2.
Not surprisingly as that's what it is.
Cryptic made no big secret of wanting to do a CoX 2 to rectify "design mistakes" during 2006. NCSoft wouldn't have it though as they realized just about the only mmog-2 that did well/better than it's predecessor is their own Lineage-II and that mostly due to switching from a 2D-isometric view to a 3D bouncing boobies engine. Cryptic saw their chance when the Marvel case got settled and they could do Marvel Universe Online. Then that got canned and it was back to CoX-2 idea's.
NCSoft still not having it though, hence the sell off of CoX at the end of 2007.
So really, Champions Online is Cryptic's "City of Heroes: take 2". The bigger mystery really is, is Cryptic doing StarTrek Online as well or not?
One thing that does tickle my fancy about Champions Online, and no it's not the unproven pitfall littered concept of cross-platform MMOG's, or graphics/animations (I'm sure Cryptic will deliver in this area as they did so before) is the use of Non combat skills.
From what I've been picking seeing so far, which is mainly pimped up video's of carefully staged animations, I'm guesstimating they'll have something to Beta second-half of 2009 and launch in 2010* Not criticizing their vids, everybody does that, but after a few development cycles, you learn to spot the we-don't-have-an-actual-game-yet ones.
Caveat: They have been mucking about with a CoX-2 / MUO / Champions Online for over 1.5 years now. If all of that effort really went into the product that's now becoming Champions Online, 2009 launch might be feasible, if they think an unpolished game at launch will do (i.e. if the money runs out).
MMORPG (Roleplaying): Mostly Men Online Role-Playing Girls
MMORPG (Acheivement): Miserable Malcontents Online Rehashing Past Glories
MMORPG (PvP): Macho Men Obviously Really Prefer Griefing
MMORPG (itemization): Misers May Obfuscate Recently Purchased Gold
MMORPG (Social): Virtual Worlds with Virtual Wealth and achievements, but with Real People with Real Feelings.

I just cant understand how MMORPGs can be done on platform system?
You can only have so many controls on a controller right? So is it going to be combo buttons or such? I went from a platformer to a computerer? player and dont see myself going back (but for only specific games ie: Rock Band/GH).
But none less, game has a long ETA and only time will tell how it will come out. Look at how long MUO was touted to only fold.

SWITCHBLADE GAMING ™ - Make the Switch! Play PC Games with your Controller
Is near fully compatible w/ CoH. There is issue with the right thumbstick not working. But it's possible. I could never get a handle on controller FPSs. But it's possible. It all depends on market out there.
My only concern is the fact you have to pay 4x's ??.
Game + Net + Xbox + Subscrip
*************
*Second Note*
*************
I don't ever nor my wife allow me to get a console. She hates my comp enough as is. But like w/ switchblade .. it allows you to actually use all 3 trays. So you can and I've even thought of getting a 360 troller to try it.
FFXI for PS2 was online game. Not sure how it's doin, but it's been up for sometime. So there are people out there that will do it. Keyboard for console? That's possibility, but what should happen if your console fries? PC most times you buy a part and good to go. I've had the same basic computer system for 6 years now.
PC vs Console? Well another issue is compatibility. Either in soft/hard ware. You have to develope for the standards/specifications to which ever has less. I'm sure 360 are kicking powerful. But w/ directx 10 coming out and new vid cards pushing our horses running from the glue fact.
It's smart marketing but risky to cross platform let alone making another game that follows the same style.
*************
*Third Note*
*************
They said that about MACs. They thriving and spec wise kick ass, just no one supports them. The console concept, is just a specific manufactured setup that is mass produced. aka is just a limited computer based for game/entertainment.
The new consoles have branched out from the earlier version generation wars, but they still serve their purpose.
Again, from 2nd note. PC vs Console wars are just now closer race than before. Console was great for gaming, but previous issues mainly were multiplaying. Well got the internet in most houses and more online servers than before has brought it up to compete. PCs were more broad usage than just gaming and still are. Console breaks - whoops. PC breaks - crap another part.
Heck they've even got a mind controlled stuff out there now that actually reads like stuff off brain or whatever. Won't need keyboards then. LOL

Yeah, but a lot of the new game systems...or well, I think ALL of the new game systems from the PS2 on up, have USB ports that will support Keyboards.
So there you go. Keyboards will make you able to do an MMO with no downside on a console.

Yup, after 20 years of hearing the PC is dying and about to be replaced by consoles, all major consoles now have Keyboards, hard-disks, and web-browsers and other amzingly PC-like features...
Keep in mind folks that the PC is an obsolete dinosaur, on the way out. Or so it's said.

Yar, we have a USB keyboard hooked up to our Wii right now. It rocks. =]
None of the games that are online though are 'Live'. Pretty much for brawl/guitar hero, it randomly sets you up with anonymous people and you can only do basic stuff. Its free though, so no complaints.
And I seriously doubt that consoles will take over the gaming world. It's kind of like all these new cell-phones that are trying to be mini computers. It just doesn't fly. CoH has had more time to mature and work out bugs. I'm not sure I want to go back to the "good old days" where the game was more limited. Right now there are so many story arcs and zones it keeps you quite busy experiencing all of them. I'll stick with CoH (only one addiction at a time please).

Yeah, Nintendo is really really weird about "protecting" kids from the evils of the internet.
To a point, I can understand it, but it's kind of annoying that you won't see any kind of REAL interaction on a Wii because of it.

What I'm thinking is that the 360 will run it just as a PC would with the keyboard and mouse. It would run similar to Final Fantasy Online except for it should be a lot smoother with the transition because Microsoft is on board with it, i.e. the achievements, online mode and such. I just hope they don't stick a monthly fee for the 360 owners because we already pay 50 a year for the gold service. If it becomes a good game then it could be one of the first great crossover games.

Exactly!!! good point Cr33s. I wouldnt try it myself, not anytime soon that is. I have a couple of kids in the house and have been putting up with the badgering about getting another console, (we have a PS2). I am trying to teach the $ for value and utility point to them. Consoles are good for a short period of time, but IMO PCs last a while longer.
Rock Band, and Guitar Hero are fun as heck, but you cant write a term paper on a Xbox, PS, or Wii.
Back on topic, Champions may be a possible next gen COH, but ill stick w/ the original. Fun for over 3 years, new content quarterly, still has kick a$$ graphics, and lately the devs have taken a keen interest in the subscribers requests.

Completely agree. Thats why I love having my own computer. And then we have a family Wii which is in the game/rec room.
Thats one of the pluses of MMOs. 15$ a month, or 100$ish a month for new games on the console?? I do love ze console games though, i'll always be a console gamer. Actually, i've been in super nostalgia right now (thanks to brawl) and im about to go to gamecrazy and buy all the 5$ old splinter cell/metal gear games and stuff for the gamecube. Since we have a wii now I got the gamecube in my room so I would just sit in here and play old nostalgia games now. Looooove it.

the whole "pick your own powers" thing isn't as bad as you were saying. Ok, imagine that you have a tank and a blaster on your team. You're about to pull a couple of mobs off of an AV. Would you rather the tank pull with a sniper power, or the blaster pull with a sniper power? The tank, because if it goes bad, aggro is on the tank. Now, this isn't possible in CoX, but in Champions Online, it will be.

Personally, I say the blaster. Because the blaster is the ranged class. Not the tank. If thats how champions is going to work, everyone will be tanks. I don't want to play a game like that.
Nothing wrong with tanks, mind you.

I'm not much of a "gamer". I don't feel the need to check out every game out there, nor do I really have the budget to do so. I only started playing City of Heroes because the concept intrigued me, I saw that it got great reviewed, and my budget finally expanded enough to accommodate a subion fee. So I don't see myself getting the game when it comes out.
If it gets amazing reviews that say it blows CoH out of the water and the online chatter confirms this, I'll pick it up and check it out. If we're a month in and it just looks like an interesting alternative, not better or worse, I'll probably stick with CoH. If we're a month in and people are really complaining about it, I'll consider myself smart.
I'm an incurable altoholic, but most recently I've played as these characters:
Abana (hero, Champion), lvl 35 mag tanker, stone/stone/fit
The Ballplayer Reverend (hero, Champion), lvl 14 nat tanker will/mace
Shrathala (hero, Triumph), lvl 12 mag scrapper, dual/dark
Fat Kat (villain, Pinnacle), lvl 10 mut brute strength/will
Souleymane (hero, Champion), lvl 14 mag defender, dark/psy

So if I could be as deadly at range as a blaster, but as resilient against damage as a tanker... Why would I play any other type of character?
What need would there be for healers if we all put out max damage with max survivability? Where's the down-side? Suddenly everyone's the same character and PRESTO, we've hit "Game=suck" in two weeks of play-time.
Some freeshards of Ultima Online has a "classless" system. In the end, it's an entire game populated with the same character in different colors and genders. It's terrible. The class/AT system that WoW, LotRO, PotBS, CoX and every other MMO out there employs is there because it forces toon/team diversity. In ChO, why would I have more than one toon if the best toon ever is always the ranged tanker?
Plus, if the best person to take the first shot is a ranged tanke, then why would you ever need a team with anything else?
Are you starting to see just why the classless system is one big suck-bucket?

You're about to pull a couple of mobs off of an AV. Would you rather the tank pull with a sniper power, or the blaster pull with a sniper power? The tank, because if it goes bad, aggro is on the tank. Now, this isn't possible in CoX, but in Champions Online, it will be. |
Not necessarily. If you pick a power that isn't in your powerset or "class" then it will be much weaker. I'm just using that as an example for aggro puproses.
It's somewhat like APPs/the Incarnate system that they were talking about.

OMg if this game is ever produced and is half as good as city of heores I would leave. I was a GM and Gamer for Champions fo rover 10 years. I still have all the books and character sheets in my attic. I even bought the books on disc and everything. Champions was the best RPG I ever played I have so many fond gaming and GM members from it.

This is what has me worried about Champions Online.
It was a pretty successful system, lots of fans and it was very, very versatile.
The online game won't be.
If you read between the lines of their Q&A's, you can surmise that you will not, by a long shot, have the complete customization of powers e.t.c. in fact, CoX today might have more diversity in that regard than CO will have, and CoX is looking to expand on this as we all know. Probably due to pressure of Champions.
Cryptic is banking heavily on the name and reputations of Champions and the Hero system, but their game will not be using the same system at all. I greatly fear they'll go the way of DDO with it, which only has superficial similarities to the D&D Pen and paper game. I.e. there's things called Magic Missile and stuff, but it's not the Magic Missile you know and love as a Level 2 Mage. Background IP is what's the Champions game will be loosely based on, and that's where they're very proud of the stuff they're coming up with from reading the site.
In short, I'm worried that the game will be a let down for veterans of the P&P game, like DDO was to the D&D veterans, because it will be something completely different, but with familiar terminology.
MMORPG (Roleplaying): Mostly Men Online Role-Playing Girls
MMORPG (Acheivement): Miserable Malcontents Online Rehashing Past Glories
MMORPG (PvP): Macho Men Obviously Really Prefer Griefing
MMORPG (itemization): Misers May Obfuscate Recently Purchased Gold
MMORPG (Social): Virtual Worlds with Virtual Wealth and achievements, but with Real People with Real Feelings.

I agree with you Lani... Most of the time when they try to redo some kind of hero stuff. It tends to fall short of the original. Most Superhero movies tend to fall short of how I remeber the comics and expect the movies to turn out.
Champions would be hard because you had so much freedom in design and gameplay that to get an online game going without characters way out of balance would be hard.
