Powers By Nature

I was thinking this week about City of Heroes and Champions Online, and thinking about how I might do things if I were to try to reinvent the superhero game. And I think I managed to come up with an interesting and different classification system besides the Origins and Archetype we have in CoH. I present to you: Powers By Nature

ASTRAL: These are powers that are either mental or spiritual in nature. Examples: The Spectre, Charles Xavier.

COSMIC: Mainly the ability to wield or manipulate energies or forces that are natural but not contained by this world, i.e. stuff we usually associate with outer space. Example: Silver Surfer

ELEMENTAL: Copying abilities or controlling forces in nature that are not living. Examples: Ice-Man, Fire, Storm.

ENHANCED: This is just taking normal human abilities to fantastic levels. This also includes normal human beings who are simply highly skilled. Examples: Batman, The Hulk, The Flash, Superman (for the most part).

PRIMAL: The duplication of abilities found in nature among living things. This may be the copying of powers of a specific species or more general feral powers. Examples: Hawkman, Spider-Man, Wolverine.

Notes:

** There's always those who are hard to classify. Where do you classify J'Onn J'Onzz? Then again, he's always hard to classify. Is Green Lantern cosmic or astral? Still, this seems like a fairly robust basic framework.

** You can make an argument that the original X-Men represented all five classifications: Cyclops (cosmic), Jean Grey (astral), Ice-Man (elemental), Angel (primal), Beast (enhanced).

** This can be considered complementary to the CoH classifications. Origin explains how they got their powers. Archetype describes their role in a fight. This describes the nature of their powers.

RE: Powers By Nature

My whole thing would be more open to pick. Not just "Class Powers". I'd like to see stuff from "Heroes Unlimited". I had a character that used "Force" powers. He could replicate objects, shoot bolts, even basic animals from transparent / translucent material. It would give him a temp armor.

Part of that issue of more free / open choices is "balance". Like Fire/Kin build is most common for farming. The "uber" powers will be most common. Like w/ SWG, if you don't use it you lose it. And they've revamp the ENTIRE game like 4 times.

But I would like more diverse powers in CoH. And I hate when they swap classes with other sides. Like in DAoC they unlocked one class to another realm which degrades the uniqueness from that realm.

As for the future of CoH, check out DAoC. They've vamped up the engine which is aweome now and when you siege castles now, you actually damage the structures, not just the front door that would swing open.
