There has been few things that have kept me away from Guild Wars, and one of them is the reason that i really dont have any characters other than pvp made. I really like PvE, but since GW2 is al most around the corner it has kept me away from PvE archievements.
It has been said that GW2 beta will come in second half of 2008 , which means around after september(?)
There is from my own experience different kinds of betas. Some are just for certain period of time and some are kept alive for as long as the game will be released.
My question is what was the beta of GW 1 like? Did it go on until the game was released?
Couse the reason i would like to continue with GW1 PvE archievements is the time i have to play it before GW2. So if the beta will continue all the way to release of GW2 i see no reason to continue with my GW1 archievements, but if it's just for certain period of time i see my self continueing with PvE, couse there will be lots of time before the actual release to get those good title archievements etc.
So, what are your thoughts of what will the beta of GW2 be like and what was the beta of GW1 like? I know there isn't really info of GW2 beta, but still i would say it to be pretty much the same as beta in GW1 was.

I wasn't there, but I believe the GW beta was only in certain weekends.

The open beta of Guild Wars started with"The World preview Weekend" Oct 29-31 2004. Anyone could download the client and play.
The open beta was the first weekend of every month, starting Nov 6-8. You got into the open beta by pre-ordering Guild Wars. The open beta lasted from November till April and the game went live 28 April 2008, if you had a pre-order key, you could start 48 hours early.
The rest of the month was closed beta - by invitation only.

I think you more or less mean Alpha Testing yes, as there isn't much for "Beta Testers" To play when the game's just a line of random console codes and whatnot eh? Beta is the stage you can basicly see as, "There's Something, but not Everything"

The thing about the way ArenaNet does things is, Closed Beta is really closed. TO the point where there's no sign-up procedure.
You hear next to nothing from it except through the occasional nephew of an uncle who has a brother that's in the Closed Beta.
Open Beta ArenaNet style really is "just" a weekend long trial Free For All. The nice thing about them so far has always been that they're actually good fun and representative of the game / chapter / expansion to be released.
I have seen nothing that makes me believe they will deviate from this way of working. Nor have I seen any official dates yet. And trust me, when ArenaNet's ready to announce (Open)Beta, you'll be unable to miss it :-)

I had a pre-order and was in on the BWEs (Beta Weekend Events).
Best thing about them was when Gwen showed up LOL.
I am willing to bet they will be handled in much the same way. Weekend events to stress test and find bugs.
However there may be a larger Closed Beta group since they are switching to persistent server areas. They will need a sample group of testers on each server testing fixes and such.
For the most part we will have to wait and see. Just 'cause they did things one way during the first games Beta does not mean they will do it the exact same way next time.
To the OP, I would keep working on things till we find out how they are going to work the Beta.

From what I've read thre in whats called Alpha Programming, they have the rough edges(i.e.GW1) and they are refining and adding things and only ANet can test it

Only thing that has been announced Beta so far is that it will be taking place in the second half of this year. Just keep an eye on wiki.guildwars.com, guildwars.com and gameamp.com for info. :D
