Ten Commandments for a Successful Forum Discussion

In the next weeks, I'll be doing a series of new topics on Forum Etiquette, and how to make you and the discussions themselves more interesting. This should be fairly known stuff for most people, but I think it is important to be conscious of it when your writing up a new post. It's just helpful to always have it in the back of your head. With that said, I will start off with the Ten Commandments.

I encourage everyone to participate

Essentially saying, just because someone is different, doesn't mean they can't contribute.

I seek out differences of opinion to enrich the discussion

If no-one disagrees, what is there to discuss? Opinions are welcome, even on controversial topics.

I stick to the subject and avoid dominating the discussion with long stories

There's nothing wrong with long posts, but you don't have to give examples on everything from A to Z. Use reasoning instead of examples.

I often restate what someone has said if it's not clear to me

This is to avoid misunderstandings.

I may summarize what the last person said before I add my own contribution

Quote the text you wish to discuss, not the whole, but just the part you want to comment on. This is is to make sure everyone understands what on to whom you are speaking to.

I criticize the ideas, not the people

This can't be stressed too often. Go for the ball, not the player.

I assume that there is something of value in every persons contribution

Even if you dislike the person, read it through before commenting. Yes, he/she might be talking rubbish, but highlight it then and comment on it. It will add structure to your post, and you will easier gain agreement if you can analyze other peoples statement (as rubbish as they might be)

I change my mind when the evidence is compelling

The bravest persons are those who are able to admit they've made an mistake. Don't be grumpy if your reasoning is faulty, just accept it and move on. At least you have learned something completely new.

If someone disagrees with me and can't give reasons for it, I move on

Don't get stuck into small details, they very often derail the topic and slips everything off. Just move on to the next argument contributed by someone else.

I focus on reaching the best decision/discussion, not on winning
Amen.

Have fun, and good luck.

Nice initiative!

I'll be adding my bit for those of us who need that little extra incentive by giving +cred to those who I see abiding with these commandments, and ++cred to those who do so in the face of adversity. I.e. when someone else is not abiding by them yet you don't lower yourself to their level.

RE: Ten Commandments for a Successful Forum Discussion

I often change my mind when I'm worn down by the same themed comments, appearing again and again and again with no substance, evidence or reason. its like the socratic cant proove anything, example:

player 1:
I play the game to enjoy it I rate characters professions skills etc on how much fun I have using them, combined with how effective they are.

player 2:
I play the game to be the best that I can be. It upsets me when I see player 1 having fun without considering the damage he is doing to me player 2 by lowering standards.

player 1: OK carry on player 2 I will continue to have fun while you are being l33t and clearly enjoying that.

player 2: no for some weird reson I can't let go of my now growing hatred of player 1. I will crush you with my dps table and ridicule you until you leave.

everyone wins :D player 2 grinds the noob into dust wrraaawww (yeah I usually leave). Player 2 however is a useful guy with obsessive compulsion comes understanding. Some freedoms are only freedoms when you see the darker side of human nature as a result. Complete anarchy is a dystopia to all but the strongest. as a forum is mainly here to learn from and learning is primarily done by people who are new to the game... perhaps rules harsh tho they might seem are a good thing in the sense that they ensure a welcoming environment, but a bad thing in that we lose some experience from players who cant control their emotions.

I'm sure we will hear allot of opinions on this. I hope I managed to stay within the boundaries while not loosing my opinion. I think many people water down what they have to say while trying to find the right way to put it so as not to offend.

one final note : I would like to see more topics about the game and less inward topics about the forum. I realise what has provoked this rash of inward topics and that matters will allways need to be looked at but i dont feel they ever will get closure and thus are best kept on the back burner away from me. I wont try and hijack this into a discussion on mystic regen however it takes a great deal of self discipline.

Ah that's great, made me laugh xD

The Commandments are a good idea, but I'd prefer them a bit less religiously themed really, but that's just my opinion, maybe cause its Easter that has an effect on it.

Anyways, good idea.

Well, if Christians find them offensive (a tad hard though, isn't it??) then I can just edit the title, the point wasn't to offend. It's just for an extra touch on what would otherwise be a quite boring theme and topic in my opinion. :)

:::EDIT:::
Oh, and I'm sure someone have seen this some place else ^^

Use proof in the form of something easy for everyone to find out, or simple logic.

If you don't use any kind of reasoning for your argument, and just say something, expect ridicule.

That only applies to Ice-hockey and then it's because:

A) there's no ball.
B) a game might break out if you did.

How about giving an answer in your own words instead of just sticking a URL to another fan site. There is plenty of talent here that surely we can answer the questions without running them off to Wiki every time.

BUMP

As some people obviously has forgotten some of these guidelines, I've just added them for a moment to the top 5 list. I urge everyone to read it carefully again.

Have a nice day.

Come on. Don't be just another anonymous dickwad, let yourself stick out above the faceless crowd in stead. Be someone. Someone worth our while.
