With caster weapons, you don't even need to meet the requirement.

really? whys that though? wont u not get the max damage its capable of? or do requirements only matter to whether you get a percentage chance of blocking an attack or increasing the length of a hex/enchant?

You can use the weap but you won't get the damage, armour or energy bonus listed enxt to the req.

Ie. If you use a 15-22 R10 sword but only have 6 in Swordsmanship you'll not get the full damage from the sword.

If you use a +12 energy Death staff with no Death attribute you won't get +12 energy.

Weapon mods like +5 energy & +30 health will still work for you tho.

RE: 2nd prof weapon question

Your weapon is your damage and energy

I thouhgt a staff doesn't matter what attribute req they have, you can still get the energy from them, although on saying that the damage of the staff would be considerabley low.

Whilst when you have a FOCUS (which is an offhand type caster weapon, goes into your shield slot) you need to meet the req in-order to get the potential energy. Same with a wand as to the staff, you won't get the right damage if you don't have the correct req.

Basically go with what your highest attribute is, you can't go wrong that way.

(Remember if you get weaken on you your attribute is - by 1 so if you JUST reach it, when u get weaken you're pretty useless, and will lose energy with a focus)

At least that's what I think :o

You actualy will get the +12 nrg from a staff. I think you're confused with an off-hand there ;P

It's pretty simple though, WEAPONS need the req to do dmg but you get all the other bonusses on it. With SHIELDS and OFF-HANDS you get 1/2 of the bonus (so if shield has 16 armor, req 9 = 8 armor for you. If the off-hand has +12 energy req 9, you get +6 energy).
But if there's a -5 damage (chance 20%) mod on the shield you will still receive that bonus. Same goes for the Halves Casting Time or Halves Skill Recharge mods on off-hands.

You'll probably find this helpful after getting the basics down:

Rouge's Guide to Weapon Swapping

It also contains reassurance that weapons outside your profession are okay, (and encouraged, in certain cases), as well as some good information about using them effectively.
