Ok, I loved the 40k minitures when I was younger, I just bought the limited collectors edition online, preorder. Here is my big question. Is this going to be a high level gear grind like WoW? Or is it going to be skill based and enjoyable? I never played Dark Ages of Camelot, I hear it is alot like that as far as RvR. WoW was a huge upgrade from EQ, but the gear thing is ridiculous in WoW. I am hoping that WAR will be the awesome game we have all been waiting for. Any advice from guys who have been on Beta?
Well, firstly i suggest you read and watch videos of warhammers official website WARHAMMER
My view is that it will mostly be not gear based, but how much time and commitment you put into your character. E.G. to get better gear youve gotta explore, and find little passages, then you must complete quests to get to the next tier (an advancement), however, compare this to WOW, WOW to me is more economically based, you dont have to "earn" armour in WOW if you have a wealthy friend.
WAR to me will be much more satisfying and warming, achieving something in WOW (e.g. a level) isnt really exhilarating. WAR will be mostly to do with achieving new highs and setting a bar for your friends to do the same (more fun)
Sounds good to me. I am really looking forward to enjoying the game and not being frustrated by it, and then feeling obligated to do well since I have already dumped so much time into it.
Great to see your devoted to a game with little hiccups in, i know some people who have already given up on it, so the more people involved, the higher the demand, the more content and press WAR will get, which is always good!
With regards to gear vs skill, I get the impression that WAR will be closer to WOW than EQ. Though actually both of those are a bit too item-centric. Not surprisingly as WOW copied a lot from EQ in that regard than did them one better by creating the whole drop-addiction/delayed satisfaction thing where you'd grind for weeks doing the same thing on end for enough drops to get into the next section where you can do it all over again.
The way WAR works (for so far as I can tell of course, it's Beta wot is Closed after all) you got a good shot at getting decent gear for your level by participating in the Public Quest system. See this as grouping without grouping. Where you get "guaranteed" stuff from accumulating Influence. That's decent gear, not top-of-the-line ultra-rare or unique one-each-per-server stuff. Getting better loot can be accomplished by participating heavily in the final tier of Public Quests (they have tiers with a progressing difficulty) through a random-deliver-reward. These are better stuff.
Additionally there's lots of "Special" enemy heroes all along the fronts that you can kill (probably with a group, they're tough I gather) and will drop great gear occasionally. As you can tell, there's some grindage involved, but there's also Renown (which is PvP points really) you can get skills and special powers through. So there's a strong skill (usage) influence involved as well.
There's really two (maybe three) main ways to Ph4t G34r, in the game. Influence and Renown are two accumulative counters, when you reach the maximum, you get a uniform good gear choice. Second there's the more conventional luck-of-the-draw drops of Named Mobs. The third way may be through crafting, but I haven't been looking into that a lot yet.
The best loot will be for the hard-core players, which I personally don't mind, as long as being a casual or not-quite hardcore player doesn't cut you out of whole sections of the game. I don't mind if certain elite-content isn't available to me. But it should not be more than 10-20% of top-level stuff. I get the impression WAR is shying away from that grind for gear so you can enter the next dungeon as an alternative to leveling.
You might be inclined to go alting a bit sooner than in WOW as a result though. Something I for one will probably be doing anyway :-)
Hope this gives you an idea of what to expect. Do realize that as the game is still in Beta wot is Closed, all of this is conjecture based on information that's available in the public domain and not through actual Beta Access, ok? I wouldn't want to break any NDA's.

Sorry for hi-jacking thread and being totally offtopic!

Out of interest are you in the closed BETA?
Stay on topic, you :-)
Seriously, the speculation I imparted in above post can be gleaned from publicly available information, some of which I linked to in recent News Posts.
So whether or not I'm in Beta has no bearing on the topic and I refuse to make public comment on it.

Okey Kokey :) was gonna ask how you got in :P if you did get in....DUN DUN DUNNNNNNNNNNNNNN
Wellllll, unless you get a personal invite of some sorts, you would have the best chance of getting in by applying for Beta on one of the sites. I know there's two separate beta's and both let new 'batches' of people in periodically.
Also, the people that pre-ordered will get in eventually at some point. Of course registering for the Beta spots via the link lani had posted in the 'links' section in the top left corner is always a smart idea.

I should clarify this, you only get the Pre-Order Benefits such as a guaranteed Open beta spot by pre-ordering the Pre-Order Version of the Collector's Edition, which can be done through a select number of Stores (Check Link section for details).
As usual, Pre Order is a mess with some stores offering the Pre-Order Kit and some not. Some who are listed as offering it never heard of it, other stores have (deliberately?) ambiguous pre-order options which basically means reserving a copy of the "regular" Collector's Edition or plain box version.
And that's just the US. EU is even more of a mess with a plethora of Scandinavian E-stores and one UK E-store offering the Pre-order kit to residents of their own Kingdoms only. I'd never heard of GOA (EU publisher before) as a publisher, and I'm starting to understand why. Not that this is a bigger mess than some other Pre-Order situations I've seen.
So if you're pre-ordering, please read everything twice and make sure you're ordering the version with the pre-order benefits! If that's what you want that is, you're paying about a month sub extra over the 'regular' CE, for an undisclosed period of Open Beta.
I ordered online through the EAstore. I registered, but have no beta experience, which seems to be key, and rightfully so. One of my friends online got in, but he was beta for DAoC and SWG. Haven't seen him since, so obviously it is a good game. With my time for gaming getting less and less, hoping this will be the game to go to. EA has a lot to live up to in taking this game as a task, Warhammer 40k is an incredible game. Anyway, Lani obviously you have some insider knowledge which I do not want to know about and compromise your integrity, but I appreciate your replies and information on the game.
Meh, I'm not revealing anything really insidish here.
You have to realize there's really a ton of information out there. Just look at some of the
NEWS items I've been posting the last month. Or visit the Special Features Section at the main site. You'll find everything I speculated at mentioned right there. Or just watch this vid to get an idea about Rewards:
I'l just start asking a few questions aswell, no, i haven't done proper homework on this game, as even some FAQ's don't exactly have the one sentence answer.
I've played a few RPG's, and just one online which is Guild Wars, WoW never been my thing with all the grinding and all.
Warhammer seems promising, and atleast the storyline i like more, LOTRO isn't my cup of tea with the story, the books & films are nice, but to replay it again as an MMO is just off for my opinion.
Anyways, to the point:
What's the general storyline in this game, is it more or less linear (depending on each faction i read) or is it open, so basicly free-roaming around and do quests as you desire, or the: Primary Quest/Secondary Quest kind of game?
I could find a FAQ about payment, but its all pretty vague, i presumed i read about timecards.
And what about Factions, Clans or Guilds, is it tied to the race you play or can you make a mix of different people aswell? (though Good-Evil can't cooperate right?)
And a minor issue, though its not scaring me off, but i've seen games change, The Graphics, the screenshots i've seen look nice, anyone know if it will improve at the final release or stay the same way, i know from Guild Wars beta's that the game improved spectacular at the final release.
I've been taught dumb questions don't exist, just lazy ones in this case, i can't always bring up the will to read through pages of text and not being able to find the exact answers.

Not going to tell 20 years of IP background that's been ripped of by parties like Blizzard in one post :-)
Suffice it to say, it will be more sandbox-like than Guild Wars, but that game had a rather strong personal flavor in the campaigns. However, from what I've gleaned from the many different sources, it's not going to be without a personal story either. They're making much of that personal journal of yours, your Tome of Knowledge which is a big part of that. There's that Public Quest system as well, where you don't even have to group but are participating along with everyone else anyway.

Being a Credit Card carrying member of the populace, I haven't checked into Time Cards that much. Will get back to you on that.

Well, I just updated our Races page so take a look. I just realized I did not add the two main alignments as information though. You have Order (Empire, Dwarfs, High Elves) and Destruction (Chaos, Greenskins & Dark Elves) and three main War fronts.
Not sure yet if you can travel as a High Elf to help out the humans or the Stuntiez, I mean Dwarfs or not. I suspect you will though. Don't think you'll be helping the Greenskins though, except maybe as food supply.

Uhm, dunno. The screenies look ok, but not great. WAR is taking a leaf (back) from WOW with the should run on any hardware concept so graphics will not be state-of-the-art.

Suggestion: Go through the news posts of the last month or so, nearly all of them contain video's for the lazy, I mean reading disinclined. There's even one that links to 5 pages of Youtube vids :-)

I read on the main Website of WAR that if you know your way around say, you start as Empire and a friend as Dwarf, you can meet up, if your new, he stated that it would take an average 10 hours of gameplay before you are ''properly'' adjusted to the game and find eachother at the main city.
I cant find the source, i swear it was on the page somewhere in the FAQ.
Anyways, thanks, as for Paycards, not necessarily, i'd just have to request a creditcard otherwise, will do that nonetheless sometime in the future, makes things easier for buying things online aswell.
I haven't really gotten the purpose of some of the classes down yet. I.e. is a chosen the equivelant of a tank? It seems the Orcs have a warrior/tank class and a warrior/zerker/dps one also. The squid herder seems to be a hunter, and the high elves appear to have a lot of casters. Am I getting that part right? I like the look of the chosen, will probably play one of those.
Elves are a caster race in general so far i've read, as it keeps with the Warhammer Lore.
Basicly i think you can sketch this setup:
Humans - General
Elves - Magic
Dwarf's/Orcs - Melee
That's the simplest way i can tell how it is, each race also has its melee units ofcourse, but the Shadow Warrior of the High Elves isn't exactly Mr ''i can take it all'', as the name says, that class is more of an Assassin, sneaky, doing lots of damage fast and then getting out before they become a target.
Orks and Dwarf's are made for Melee really, they don't seem to harness that much magic capable classes at all, and Chaos/Empire are balanced.

Yes, and no.
Humans are the generic jack-of-all-trades (as usual), mixing Melee, Magic, Mysticism and Mechanics/Tech. (blunderbusses kick ass)
Dwarfs are Melee and Ranged Mechanics / Traps.
High Elves are Magic / Mysticism and Melee DPS. They do get a tank. More about grace than damage soak though. Think R/W Stancetank from GW rather than the W/M "Pally" build :-)
Dark Elves are High Elves on Drugs and too much Gothic Punk mmusic.
Chaos is the most diverse probably. Chosen will be the melee oriented class with a bit of mysticism thrown in.
Greenskins are.... Well.... Greenskins.
Meaning Crazy Mechanics / Mysticism and Melee.
Oh! And the only Pet owner class too.
Kinda hoping the missing High Elf class will be a Falconer, but that's reealy Wood/Wild Elves, not High Elves.
Don't underestimate the Mysticism and Mechanic lines, Melee and Magic are the most obvious ones, but that makes the other lines more interesting.
MYthic is on the one hand keeping it simple, you have 4 classes each per race, but they're not classic tank / mage / healer / DPS it seems. And keep in mind that these classes are really Careers, just like those were catch-alls for a wide variety of options in the P&P RPG, the Mastery system will ensure many different paths, or builds within each career.
Ah sorry, i just classed Mysticms and all that under the General Magic assumption, still, i was right about Humans, but then again, any game featuring more races then humans basicly follows that path, One melee, one casting/ranged, and one balanced. XD
Im more knowledgeable about the Warhammer 40K universe then the *normal* one frankly.
Im more knowledgeable about the Warhammer 40K universe then the *normal* one frankly.
In that case, let me give you a one-line descr!ption of the Old World:
A seeder planet that somehow managed to have degenerated members of several known races and if that wasn't bad enough, it's irrevocably corrupted by Chaos.
Suggested remedy: Exterminatus.
One of the cool things about the P&P RPG was that back-knowledge that the entire world was pretty much doomed.
Yes, this game came about during the cold war when a nuclear holocaust and following fallout winter were a distinct possibility.
