In the real world, there's debt and deficit and countries barely making ends meet. If the comic book world reflects this world, it makes me wonder where the find the money to rebuild streets and buildings destroyed in major battles.
Think about the Hulk alone. One landing from his leap usually causes a crater in the streets. Who pays for this? Taxes must be insane in New York and other super-friendly cities.
After perusing my Onslaught collection, all the major bridges and exit tunnels were destroyed. Not only that, but buildings damaged by Sentinels and near the end, Onslaught unleashed a wave of energy that totalled all the buildings around Central Park, not mention the park itself.
Where does the money come from in this comic world...
Then again, maybe I'm just looking to deep into a thing that shouldn't matter. In a world where men and women can fly and hurl buses across entire cities, I'm concerned about who gets the clean up bill...

I would bet that your average super hero would have some pressure to participate in programs that donate money and time back to the community, much like sports stars do in the real world. Not that it would account for all the money, but it would definitely take care of some of it. And let's face facts, the reason why you never get to see it in comics is because it is boring... who wants to see Spidey spend a day in community service, helping clean up a park he trashed?

Right after the Inferno storyarc many years ago, there was a great Christmas issue of X-Factor where the crew helped clean up the problems that happened due to the invasion. (Ice Man even made a giant ice christmas tree on top of the empire state building).
That's the only reference I can remember to helping clean up after something like that.

Its funny you mention this, DC comics (I think) had their own comic dedicated to post-super human clean up, in the recent Fantastic Four, as in 2004-2005, when Reed goes bankrupt and the U.S. Gov pulls all funding from supporting the team, New York jumps on the band wagon and says that Reed has to pay the bill for all the clean up NY has had to do that the U.S. Gov was paying the city...so they are evicted from the Baxter Building...Avengers is pretty much the same deal with the Gov watching their back in every heated debt some wise ass general always pulls the "We have to clean up your messes" and what not...well not so much now in the New Avengers...
If you checked out the Justice League on Cartoon Network, you could see an episode with Booster Gold, where all the second hand hero's are used for crowd control while all the main superheroes bust up the city, in the end all the hero's are on "clean up" detail.
Most of the old Transformers episodes involved the Autobots doing clean up at the end of every episode, and the comic did as well, the DreamWorks comics now a days doesn’t really focus on that too much.
A touching scene if you have not checked it out is in HEROS, the Marvel Comic dedication comic for those that were victims and/or Heroes during 9/11, in the book you can see all the superheroes and villains trying to help the Firemen, Police, Construction works, doctors, and everyone else there.

Fantastic Four is Marvel.
IMHO, it seems that what the comic book world lacks in funding, they make up for in cheap workmanship. That's why Hulk leaves a crater when he hits the pavement, but not when he lands on a mountainside. Haven't you ever noticed that even heroes without any powers can break through walls and doors? That is really shabby construction!

This comic comes HIGHLY recommended. We were talking about pop-culture response to 9/11 in school, and I showed the online version of this comic to my teacher. (This was also the class in which I argued that comic books are our culture's mythology)
*spoiler*
Possibly the greatest scene is when the heroes are cleaning up, and the villains come along to help out. Dr. Doom even has a tear in his eye...

Sorry, I was typing to get all my ideas out...yup FF is Marvel so is the Avengers...
Here is the real question to get the grey matter going...If we are to believe that superheros live in Buildings and have jobs, and eat at home or out....Do superhero's use the restroom? If they do is it reflective of there power?
This is on the lines of clean up, If the Hulk has to go number 2, would that truly be a gamma bomb?
Talk amoungst yourselves....

In Champions, the RPG, well before MMORPGS of any kind, I played a Tanker type that manipulated minerals. He worked his "day-job" rebuilding roads and bridges that had been damaged in superhero fights. How else do you think we rock-manipulating heroes can pay the bills? I imagine that the mind-effecting ones act as psychologists, the fire ones help with waste disposal or, if they cancel flames, fight fires. Every hero can find a day job, except maybe scrappers. They would make lousy door-to-door salesmen.

I think another great example is the critically acclaimed series "Marvels." The story is told from the perspective of the humans in superhero populated cities. The main character, and many of the supporting cast, converse about the issue of repairing the damages caused by superhero battles. It's an excellent view of exactly what this post questions.

I heard about the comic with the Marvel Firefighters and Cops coping with a world of heroes but never had a chance to check it out. I guess that would answer a few questions I ask...
Also, the comic with the heroes and villains in 9/11 was the now famous and very well done Black Issue of Spider-Man.

Actually, most of my favorite heroes have day jobs that have nothing to do with their powers. Many of them have high paying jobs, and that's how they can afford all the gadgetry they use when they moonlight as superheroes.
Just a few examples:
Batman: Owns and sometimes runs Wayncorp.
Professor X: Runs a private school.
Ironman: CEO of Starke/Stane International.
Spider Man: News photographer.
Superman: News reporter.
Beast: University professor AND has dozens of patents.
Mr. Fantastic: Top scientist in his field.
Wonder Woman: Spy for a secret federal angency.
Nick Fury: Gets paid to be a hero.
Captain America: Gets paid to be a hero.
The Atom: Top scientist in his field.
The Blue Beetle: Top scientist in his field. (Though that's his only power.)
Huntress: Teaches high school and spends her rich father's money.
Aquaman: Head of state.
Sub Mariner: Head of state.
I could keep typing all night, but I'm hungy, so I'll leave the rest for others to type in.

Man,
Turning on my geekhood here....
Marvel had a short lived series called "Damage Control" which had a team of super powered "cleaners" who would come in and help fix all the damage that super powered teams would cause.
The super powered team in question was Squadron Supreme...Marvels knock off of the Justice League.

Another good point that might be worth making is that technology, thanks to the minds of Reed Richards and Stark in Marvel and those hired by Bruce Wayne and S.T.A.R. Labs in DC have probably made advanced in repairs, not to mention the patents probably make a tidy bundle.
Also, as I recall, Bruce Wayne usually his hands in the repairs of Gotham after Joker or Two-Face blew up a building cuz they didn't like it. Stark probably reacts the same way.
And before I forget, another titanic battle is the Superman/Doomsday brawl that spanned half way across the country and level most of Metropolis' industrial area. 'Course, I'm sure Luthor had no problem picking up the tab on that one...
*sigh* Boy am I a geek...

I actually remember this group. They were a bunch of freaks. The Fantastic Four had to move in with them after they got kicked out of the Baxter Building...And hilarity ensued. :)

That looks like you switched sides, because Metropolis stayed largely destroyed for a couple of years after that. To my knowledge, It still hasn't been completely rebuilt.

Hmmm...I don't follow Superman regularly, if at all, but I did read that story simply cuz you have one of the greats falling. Appealed to me a bit, but I did not know that Metropolis stayed that way for a long time.
I'm accustomed to seeing a major battle then a month or two later the cities fine again, which of course led to me wondering what that was all about.
BTW, what do you mean switched sides?

You argue both sides of the issue. You post arguments both in favor of and against the existance of money in comics.
Also, DC got a lot of good stories out of the devastation from that battle. Batman, Green Arrow, Nightwing, Steel and many others had to go to the demolished areas for various reasons. When they started the Zero Hour crossover, it was still damaged and the heroes involved were still talking aout it. I think it was the end of Zero Hour that finally repaired the damage, rather than the efforts of human beings.
BTW, if you think Metropolis was devastating, read Zero Hour. Hal Jordan destroyed the entire universe, not just in the present but also its entire past and future!
