Powers you regret getting

So I got to level 18, and, since I generally team with a mutation tanker, I thought an additional attack power would be nice for those pesky minions who tend to find their way to me while the tanker is taking most of the hits, so I could fight him off.

I figured AIM would be good, since it seemed to work really well for increasing my aim in attacks. WRONG!!!!!!!! I am finding this power useless, because it only lasts thislong, and my current electrical powers don't recharge fast enough for it to make use of my other stuff. Am SO deeply sorry I got it now..just sits there being useless, most of the time.

Anyone else get a power you wish someone had warned you about before...

Re: Powers you regret getting

Actually Aim is a great power. It isn't very useful until you are able to drop some slots into it. I would say add about 4-6 slots with Red Recharge and maybe a To Hit Buff. Aim will actually increasae the accuracy of the shot and add a tiny bit of damage to the attack. Now being defender your primary is your bread and butter; with that being said it may take sometime for you to get those slots into the attack. Right now you are probably focusing on adding those slots to your primary powrs. But no you didn't make a bad decision. Aim is useful but you may want to respec later and rechoose the power later on.

Re: Powers you regret getting

I think I'm about to respec out of the worst power that I've witnessed on CoH - Salt Crystals. I understand the idea behind the power, but it has never been incredibly useful. Even after adding a few slots and filling them with Accuracy enhancements, I can hardly ever hit anything. My recommendation is to stay far away from this one.

Re: Powers you regret getting

There are two powers that I wish I would not have taken. In my secondary as an ice/ice blaster there are two holds that you get in your 30s...both of which are horrible! As and ice/ice blaster I love my holds so I thuoght oh goddie more holds! Frozen Touch is worthless it is a melee hold....I don't wanna be in melee range and even with acc. enhancements misses a ton. And Frozen Aura is an area sleeping hold that looks realy cool cuz you stomp the ground really hard, but again rarely hits, and besides in cold mastery there is flash freeze which is the same as frozen arua but does damage and actually works, I cannot wait to respec in one lvl and get aim and buildup instead of those two powers!

Speaking from my dark/dark scrappers point of view, CLOAK OF FEAR omg what a waste! So worthless, it does not hold it does not do much in lowering accuracy, the only thing it does a good job at is sapping my end. Even against a lvl 6 (i tried this one day) it took about 6 seconds before the fear kicked in. LVL 34 respec here I come....

Group Teleport. Useless as Group Fly, and more inconvenient. Joe Neptune has used it only once for emergency evac. While it was a life-saving maneuver, the same can be done using Recall Friend to a safe location.

Re: Powers you regret getting

Now, I just want to step in and remind everyone keeping score at home that just because people here say they wished they hadn't gotten a certain power, it does not mean it's worthless. For example, Hasten can be very usefull with different builds, while not so much with others. Likewise, moves such as salt crystals can be imporved with a different secondary powerset. Kepp in mind that our words are not law.

Anyways, I rather dislike gale on Storm defenders, if they took it instead of O2 boost. This is cause as a defender, you should probably spring for the heal instead of the almost worthless knockback.

well as an PA troller... I actually hated deceive... at low lvls it was great, I could have teh bad guys beat each other up , but as I got higher and was teaming more 1 of 2 things happened... either people would attack and kill what I'd just deveived... OR they'de get mad cause I could't deceive the boss.

Now I've heard of other PA trollers that Hvae no problems with that and LOVE deceive... I personally think it's crap.

Re: Powers you regret getting

After a bit of play with my Fire/Ice blaster I don't realy regret the following but I do find some powers that I hardly ever use:

Blaze-I can only use this shot when someone standing 5 feet away. It's powerfull, but nowhere near as powerfull to drop someone quickly when they're running towards me. Not to mention the accuracy on it really sucks. It's got about a 70% hit rate I think, and it always seems to miss when I need it the most.

Frozen Fists-I use it rarely, yes it does some damage, and it has the benifit of slow, but it's a rather wussy mele attack.

Rain of Fire-I only use it as a "panic attack" to get mele fighters off of me. It's far to wussy to do anything decent damage wise as a solo power, and as an added benifit, it's useless in a team situation unless I want everything to change it's focus from the tanker to ME.

Re: Powers you regret getting

Rain of Fire is the single power that I hear the most griping about, so it needs mentioning. But I have not played a fire/fire blaster in many moons, I have an elec/elec blaster that is a lot more fun. With that in mind:
Short Circuit. It sounds great, and I have found uses for it, but they are few and far between. Any power where you only use it once every 4-5 missions is usually a waste of space. (Note that this is not true of Resurrection powers, not using them just means you are doing real well with your other powers). If you don't use it, it was a bad choice (unless it is a power pool lower level power that you needed to get a movement pool).

Gale is far from useless, but it took me a little while to figure our what it was for. It's not an attack. It's for taking those guys who snuck past the Tanker and putting them back in front of the Tanker again. Slot it for accuracy and knockback distance. I regretted Gale only until I figured this out, and now it's one of my favorites.

The only one I still regret wasting a slot on was Super Jump. I never managed to get it to work right. I'm not saying it's a bad power, though, but I should have stuck with more familiar travel powers. The TP/Hover combo is my favorite!

Re: Powers you regret getting

Agreeing with Arcane. I don't like Rain of Fire. The only time it's worthwhile is when you have a controller holding the whole group. Otherwise they just bolt out of it anyway and it amounts to almost no damage. When I respec, I'll probably add Stealth in it's place or something else that's more useful. Maybe just get my other powers earlier. Heck, I'd rather have one of the Energy Melee attacks than that. It's expensive and the only use I've had for it is defensive. Drop it down right in front of me and mobs tend to stay out of Melee. Not worth it, IMHO.

Re: Powers you regret getting

Torrent, the dark blast knockback attack. Although it is fun to watch the baddies go wooosh (and that is roughly the sound it makes) it was a waste of a slot for me. The reason is between tar patch, tentacles and Petrifying gaze not much gets close unless I either let it or make a mistake, and even then if I haev my pet out he keeps in held/immobilized and I can simply backup or TP to a better location. I shoulda taken moonlight, nice ot snipe when solo and good to quickly take down baddies that are held. Oh well respecing is such a slow process at 35 wish respec had a "backup __ levels" so it would go to how it was at say L32 and I could just repick my most recent power without all the repicking and slotting, oh welll

I don't make a /Dark defender without getting Moonbeam. It's incredible damage and great for pulling single foes while you're soloing. For a level 4 power, I consider it a necessity.

Just a quick word to defend rain of fire. Check my reaons here. I use it all the time in solo missions, most of the time in small teams, and quite frequently with big teams. You just have to pick and choose when to use it, but that is kind of the whole strategy behind being a good blaster. There's my two cents.

Re: Powers you regret getting

When you use this combo right, you lock down 2 enemies for your melee people to attack. They are getting damage the whole time from the rain. This can work for small groups of enemies, or in large herded groups that start to wander. In the latter case it allows you to control some of the battle so the tank doesn't have to work so many angles.

My issue with this is the endurance cost involved, for one and two, I'm a Fire/Energy, not a Fire/Fire. So for me, Rain of Fire is almost totally worthless. I don't have holds. For a Fire/Fire, it's alright in the right situation. For a Fire/Ice, it's a great power. For Fire/Energy, I've been able to use it now and then. (drop the rain, bad guy runs to you, use the knockback from the energy secondary to knock him back into the rain...he takes a lot of damage while he's trying to get up)

But all in all, it's just a big endurance drain for me and will probably get respec'd out soon.

Re: Powers you regret getting

The Tsoo caltrops don't really bother me much. It's those damned Tsoo Ink Guys that I can't stand. The ones with the Psi attacks. Uugh. I hate not having any mez protection. Plus, I'm level 21 still, so my enhancements are all yellow because I don't want to waste the money I have on "greening" my DOs when I'm getting SOs in half a level.

As far as regrets. Sometimes I regret taking Energy as a secondary until I remember how easy it made levels 1-20 getting build up at level 4. But the rest of it bites. The only thing good about it is that I'm not wasting power slots on my secondary and I can get the pools I want.

Re: Powers you regret getting

KK a few notes.

Salt crystals...very useful power up until you get uber tanks who can hold aggro continously. The occasional team or bad situation still requires it. I had mine 2 SO accuracy slotted and 1 sleep.

Against my lvls I hit nearly every guy....higher lvls around half of em.

Yes its a sleep. IT's basiacally just a pbaoe form of mass hypno. Used effectively its good...used badly it sux.

AIM. It works very well with powers that cause controllerish effects.

Or if you want to be absolutely sure something hits.

Rain of Fire. Aside from teamwork or the correct build its a panic button.

Re: Powers you regret getting

Hmmm, powers I regret getting...

For my blaster, anything melee in nature, or requiring me to be within melee range to use. I took a few in the beginning but quickly respeced them out. All range all the time, baby!

With my Empath/Dark Defender, I respeced out Regeneration Aura. I just didnt notice the health boost. Maybe slotted its awesome but I didnt give it that chance.

The worst power I had (now respec-ed out) was handclap. The power knocks back all the nicely herded villians without any damage. So not only do you have to struggle to get within range again, they have lost their aggro on you and start going after the now nearby blasters.

Grif regrets no power choices but in his "kindergarten" days of heroing he made bad slotting choices. How about slotting Rest with 3 slots (2 heals and recharge) and then add in the extra slot to Brawl (2 damages). DOH! Ok lets just say that character doesn't exsist anymore.

Anyways, I rather dislike gale on Storm defenders, if they took it instead of O2 boost. This is cause as a defender, you should probably spring for the heal instead of the almost worthless knockback.

ah yes, but you should see a whole group of storm defenders.... now THAT is some fun there.

There's an entire SG on Protector called OMGKB... nothing but storm/nrg defenders... more fun than a barrel of monkeys. I had a ton of fun teaming with them. :)

But a new regreted power... for my Kheldian.... Orbiting death.... it's a really pretty looking power, but at low lvls, when you have no endurance, and no slots in it... it's pitiful. I haven't had any experiences with it now that I'm over 20, but that's because my human form is so weak that I'm practically useless.

There are so many great powers to choose from as a WS... that one is just crap.

I'll have to let you know if I come across any with my PB... she's going strictly human, since she's a teamer. :) Go Miss Orion!
