Minionless Mastermind

If you're reading this, you're probably already wondering what it is that I'm smoking and if you can have some. The answer is no, it's mine and you can't have any.

Anyway, I was thinking of something new and out of the ordinary to try and this is what I came up with. A mastermind sans minions. Looking through the different Mastermind powersets, it doesn't seem like going minionless is going to lend it self well to my survival.

Regardless of whether I live or die though, here's a couple combos I thought would be fun to try minionless...

Ninja/Trick Arrow -ninja already uses a bow anyway, right?
Necro/Dark -dark has life drain which would come in handy
Thugs/Traps -I dunno, seems to go together

Also, I would consider the power you get to call a single minion as fair game and still be considered minionless because of all the other ATs that get pets, though I'd probably start out pure minion free to see how it goes.

Anyway, enough yappin' from me. Discuss.

Well fine then :P

On to the subject at hand...

I will say that the Thug/Traps would work. Granted you will reach the debt cap at very early age in your characters career. I have a Thugs/Traps Mastermind and there are many times I place my Thugs around a corner as my traps do most of the work. Now this doesn't work all the time as I have found some groups are impervious to my plans and I have to run like hell while calling for my henchmen to bail my rear out of trouble.

But over all I would say it is an interesting concept...

RE: Minionless Mastermind

I did a bit of digging and found this thread. It is almost two years ago now, and I have long lost contact with the person that tried it. So I have no idea how far it got. But if you would start it now I would go with thugs. The thugs MM pistols seem to be doing the most damage of all MM primaries. And probably traps could go with it. But it makes you basically a very gimped AR/traps corrupter. Nice idea, but I doubt it will fly very far.

RE: Minionless Mastermind

I got a Necro/Poison to about level 12 a while back, and let me tell you, it sure was fun.

If you want to play a minionless MM, you should pick a secondary set that isn't available to other ATs like Trick Arrow, Poison, or Force Fields. Also, Necromancy is probably your best bet for your primary because you don't need to draw a weapon and you have the built in self heal.

RE: Minionless Mastermind

I was running a Thug/DM henchmenless MM...Lady Gunslinger :) She was actually pretty fun to play and with the decreased activity on the Devastators atm, i'm thinking of dusting her back off....

That's what I went with last night. Thug/DM, DM for the self heal. Seems to me to be even slightly successful as a minionless mastermind, you'd have to have a self heal. PanzerEXE's Necro/poison sounds quite fun too. Might have to give that a go one of these days.

That might have matched my costume a little better too. My Thug/DM is a hairy little monster lookin guy. Named him Chup A Cabra. Looks kinda funny to have him whip out some pistols and go all gangsta on his foes.

So far I made it to level 3 with him and he does seem much more difficult to play than anything else. Not that 3 levels is any indication of how a certain build will play...

Thanks for posting that Phe. It's kinda funny, I even posted in that thread, and here's what I had to say about it then.

I would say it's entirely possible to hit 50 that way. Only thing is, she'd probably spend a lot of time grinding on blues and greens. 1 xp per kill will get you to 50 too, it will just take forever. So yeah, possible, but not the most desireable way to play.

Funny how time has a way of changing people's minds about something. I don't think I would have considered it back then, but here I am now, doing it myself. :)

so i was thinking to use that with the mercs. get the final summon and give him serum, it would only be one hench, but he would be one killer hench.

and then there's thugs. does gang war count as a henchmen since its not perma and non-controllable?

I would say that gang war most certainly counts. They aren't actually controllable minions. I'm not so sure about the final summon though. Is it controllable?

What I'm thinking of when I decided what counts is my Illusion controller. He's got Phantom Army and Phantasm, neither of which are controllable by him. They're just kind of there. So basically, I'd say it's fair game if it is not controllable when summoned.

Gang War definetly fits. They are like a group of Tazmanian Devils, just tearing up everything they get near. They should come in a crate with a warning label to "OPEN AT YOUR OWN RISK".
