Well, i first heard of this in my networking class at school. IPv4 Which is currently what we are using has been in affect since the 80's and we are slowly running out of IP addresses, by 2011 or even sooner the internet could just stop working with an overflow and lack of IP addresses. Thats where IPv6 Apparently comes in, kicks v4 Out and takes over, leaving us with so many IP addresses available, that practically every physical, electronic powered device in this world can have an IP.
A silly way would be to say even your TV remote could have one, there will be so many available and we supposedly will not run out.
With this comes a compatibilty issue.
IPv4: http://192.168.1.100/
IPv6: http://[2001:0db8:85a3:08d3:1319:8a2e:0370:7348]/
This um... leaves many questions.
Windows XP, 2000 and below may become useless to the Internet, only to be used on old IPv4 LANs that may exist in the future....
Games:
What about FPS's that use IP Addresses for servers, that wont let you put anything else but 000.000.000.000 in instead of that weird line of code looking new v6 address?
What about MMO's?
With IPv6 looking similar to MAC addresses and being so many of them, things will be easier to track right to the source computer right to someones front door, if only it was like that today on AMP huh?
2011 is a few years away yet, Mac OS X, and Vista are already set to be ready for v6..so we will still be able to access the internet, but how will we make the switch how many things will be rendered useless or be affected by the new Addressing scheme?
What do you guys think?
Discuss...!
EDIT: More info on v6 here, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPv6

The game developers will have to update their game to the next generation. Progress is great but sometimes things get left behind. It will be many many years before some of these games will be needing to be upgraded though.

I heard of it, but as i shocked some people before, my knowhow of Software is too limited that i take in no regards whatsoever to bother protecting any such statements i make about software or any other thing in that category.
I have heard of IPv6 a few times now, as for Compatibility issues, IPv6 Won't be going instantly the other day, it will go gradually, replacing one computer & router at a time, due to that it will be a slow process that will give it enough time for incompatibility issues to rarely occur, simply because it diminishes at such a sluggish rate it's not that noticeable.
It's funny though, with so many networking units, if we'd also add every office computer on a network we'd be out by IP's already.
I think the more debatable/discussable object here for the masses however (excuse me) would be;
{The Grid} (LINK)
The Grid is the so-called N3w InterWebz 2.0, proclaimed to be 10000 times faster then our slow, dreadfully awful and completely filled intertubes (all those trucks filling up those series of tubes)
I have my doubts, Yes, Internet will at some point in the future be improved, as goes with everything, no, the coming decade will not herald a 10000% increase in Faster Pr0n Downloads, sorry lads.
Everyone would need Optic-Fiber cables to their homes to actually benefit from this speed, as the older cables, no matter how much speed you are given, you can't always utilize it all.
Still, The Grid is a thing of the future, just is everything else, keep in mind not to laugh to much at the idea and it being impossible, i thought 32MB of RAM and 200Mhz Processors was the maximum limit of Awesomeness back in the years when i got my first ever Pixel Pushing unit.

Lawnmower man 2: Beyond Cyberspace explains this pretty well.

worth a view if you really want to understand the internet

Well wait till we push a TB of Ram and a THz (terahertz) CPU :)

I'm kinda wondering what the issue is here?
Windows 2K has network software for IPv6.
Windows XP has software for IPv6.
Windows Vista has IPv6 integrated into the network layer.
Every other OS has been patiently waiting for Microsoft to catch up. IPv6 has already been in use the entire third millennium...
It's not like IPv4 will suddenly disappear either.
What about all those games that have human-interfaces for IP addresses with only the IPv4 namespace? What will happen to them. Absolutely nothing. They'll keep using the IP addresses until the makers decide to push out an update to use IPv6, which in some cases they won't bother to do as it won't be needed.
What about all those FPSes using IPv4 on your LAN? Same thing as with all those FPSes uisng IPX (that alternative you needed before Windows 98 became IPv4 sane). You can still use it. If I recall correctly my classes on IPv6 in 1998, IPv6 is backwards compatible with IPv4 anyway.
So what is the panic about?
What about your Internet Router? Well, if you have one 10 years old and still working, you may need to invest $25,- in a decent new one that's IPv6 sane/ready should your Provider switch to IPv6 any time soon. The ones coming out this millennium are IPv6 ready.
The ICT business at large has been preparing for IPv6 for 15 years. Amazing as this may seem, the sky will not be falling as a result of that effort.

About that TB RAM and CPU thingy. Lets say now Dualcore is the shiat. It can run everything smoothly. So does your 2 gigs of ram.
But when time goes by programs and games will be more edemanding and soon that TB wont even be cool to have since its required.
I swear, SOMEONE IS HOAXING MY POSTS TO MAKE MY GRAMMAR LOOK BAD!
