Setting a Static IP on Linksey WRT54GS (Wanting an Open NAT) Xbox 360

This should probs go in the off topic section So if it needs moving could a Mod do that for me please. Moved. ~Staff

I posted this on another forum so il just paste what I said on their.

Static Ip for Xbox 360

At the moment , Im set up on a Moderate connection. Iv gone to Port Forward and looked at their guides for giving my xbox 360 a static ip and forwarding the ports through my router.

The Router im using is a Linksey WRT54GS (Wireless) Version 6.

The problem with the ip im having is setting the xbox to correspond with my router.

My Xbox Allows
192.168.0.230 and having my gateway set as 192.168.0.1 - That allows me to connect but when i go on my Linksey router page I cannot port forward the ip address for 192.168.0.230 because it only allows me to change the last box as its setup as 192.168.1.X.

Sorry if thats confusing

If i change the Xbox to say 192.168.1.230 and change my gateway (Or leave it at 0.1) then my ip address fails instanly.

So my question is - How can I get the IP Address to correspond with my router. Once thats done i should be able to get an open NAT.

===========================================================

I got a reply saying I should make a static DNS. Which i tried and it failed. So I made another reply with some screenshots.

===========================================================

Thanks for the replys
I tried what you suggested and it still didnt work. Il try to explain it more in these screenshots.

This is on my routers page when I go to port forward. I need to forward the ports through my router to get an Open NAT. The problem iv circled is the Ip address :

192.168.1.____

Now when I go onto the Xbox and change the ip to say :

192.168.1.108 - I get failed everytime i try. Iv tried changing the last numbers and it still dosent work.

When I put the ip to :

192.168.0.108 - Then it connects straight away but I cant forward a port through my router because it only allows

192.168.1.____

I must be doing somthing wrong. When i tried the static DNS it just crashed my wireless so I must of added somthing wrong there.

The last screen shows my home page. If i need to change any information please let me know

I hope it made it a bit more understanding. Also I dont suppose I need to change anything on the gateway?

Thats set to 192.168.0.1

Thanks

So If anyone dosent understand , Il try and explain it better :)

In your router, look for an option where you can see the entire Network, from there you can usually edit one of the computers/network devices and say: Static/Fixed IP Adress.

AS said before, im a no-goer for most Network related issues, but some routers i've come across feature that by their own to assign a static IP to a certain machine.

Urgh, your images are already starting to say you've exceeded your bandwidth. Use your Gameamp Profile's gallery if you would and include the full image in the post if you would, makes following the problem a lot easier.

As far as I can tell so far, your problem is that XBOX and Router both want a different IP range. That's weird on the Router's part. I've still got the WRT54GL 1.1 and you can set up and IP range (like say 10.x.x.x as enforced by some VPN clients). If it's impossible with your

But... I think you're trying to do things in the wrong order.
If the XBOX wants an 192.168.0.x range and won't budge on that (shoddy design there MickySoft, but what else is new) you need to set that up on the LinkSys. And from the pictures, you haven't done that.

The LinkSys will not allow you to set up a NAT range for a different IP range than where it's in. Well, it will if you start setting up VLANs which is googlygook to me, so let's not ok?
Your LinkSys' basic out-of-the-box setup is for a 192.168.1.x network. You can set it to any x.x.x.x configuration you want though. But if it's set, it will take that x.x.x.x and not x.x.y.x which is where your XBOX is, in the Y-section.

You first need to stop looking into NAT and go to basic setup of the thing. Make it the DHCP host (should be by default) and set it to hand out IP's in the 192.168.0.x range. It might work like magic at that point.

If not, you may need to reserve 192.168.1.230 for the XBOX.
If all that fails, go looking into Static DNS routes 'n stuff, but getting the XBOX and Router to be in the same network segment IP wise should probably be your first step.

Btw, this advice becomes invalid if you're running a multi-PC network over that LinkSys as I have no information regarding dependencies built into your home network due to PC's. But I'm hoping you're smart enough not to put a gaming PC on wireless :-)

Thank's a mite mate :-)

This one was giving me the pohotobucket waste basket runaround.
In this screen, change the 92.168.1.x series to 192.168.0.x and see what occurs. What you'll be doing is telling the LinkSys Router to set up a LAN using the same IP-space the XBOX seems to prefer. You might need to reboot some devices, but that's normal.

Woohoo!

Edit:

Just realized something.
It probably would have worked if you'd changed the 255.255.255.0 to 255.255.0.0 on the LinkSys and the Gateway entry on the XBox to 192.168.1.1
Downside would have been that your LinkSys thinks it has to play router for 254 times 253 PC's :-)
Hey, it's a LinkSys! It can handle it!
