Well, sometime soon I'm going to be coming back into the game. I'm posting a nearly identical post to this on the Villains side, but just ignore it because the questions asked on this post are going to be specific to the Heroes side.
First off, when I was last playing, I seriously realized how good controllers really are. After playing as a blaster, scrapper, kinetics defender, brute, mastermind, corrupter, and dominator, I picked up both the Tanker and the Controller ATs to try to get some variety into my play-style.
Well, first I made a Fire/Trick Arrow Controller. *Yawn*
Then I made an Earth/Storm Summoning Controller, and DANG that was fun. Having the lockdowns with snowstorm and gale was extremely fun, not to mention when I added quicksand to the mix.
I also made an Illusion/Kinetics Controller, which I liked, but it just wasn't as much fun the the Uber-controllerness of Storm Summoning.
So, I was wondering, would Illusion/Storm Summoning be a good build? I know that soloing would be next to impossible, but I would make this toon on Freedom anyways so that I could always get a team. How beneficial to teams would this guy actually be? Would Earth/Storm be better for teaming? Can anybody make a sample build for me? Thanks in advance.
Then, Bigspeer got me interested in the Ice/Ice tanker after the guides that he posted (I've been a member of Amp for a while as Shock Trooper 0083, but I forgot my password >.>) and I made one who got to about level 12. Wow, I was amazed, but I could never hold aggro very well. I never really took too much damage though, so it was a fun set. My only complaint was little to no damage, but I still liked being a meat shield.
Well, I've heard (and witnessed) that Granite Armor makes you next to unkillable. At the same time, I've heard that other than that, Stone armor is a very slow set. Would I suck too much before I got to level 32, or would it all be doable? next, which secondary set would be the best? I can't decide between Fire and Energy, or I was even considering Ice as odd as it may seem.
My reasoning was this:
Energy- It does the most damage, therefore I would attract the most aggro. But, what I did realize, is that most of it's damage is single target, and its highest damage attack sacrifices some of your Hp. Will I still be able to maintain a high amount of aggro with just the single target attacks?
Fire- This has the most AoE attacks, so I'm guess that it would be a good choice. I've never really liked the animations in this set, but I can get over that. Will this be a good choice for aggro management because of it's high AoE damage and DoT effects?
Ice- I would pick this for Ice Patch. That's it. It already has low damage, so coupled with granite I would probably be doing a very low amount, but oh well, that's what teammates are for.
Stone Melee- High damage, AoEs.. Eh, maybe.
So, any suggestions?

Hey Panzer, welcome back. As for a controller, Illusion/storm actually can solo pretty decently once you get Phantom army and later Phantasm. They put out pretty decent damage and you will essentially be nigh unkillable by anything short of an AV by level 35. Earth/storm would be a great team build, terrible soloability though. Earth has the best lockdowns around and storm compliments that very well. Personally, I'd go with Illusion however, its packs quite a bit more punch.
As for an ice tank... back in the day I made a fiery aura/Ice melee tank. Whoops. Back then burn was actually a useful attack and combo'd with icepatch you had a great group killing tool, alas, those days have past, and he is now near useless as Ice melee outputs such incredibly low amounts of damage. Ice armor has the single best taunt aura in the game called Chilling embrace. If you want aggro, throw a taunt enhancer or two in there, problem solved! Ice melee, while it may combo well with ice armor, has such terrible dps that it is not even close to worth going for these days. Personally, I'd recommend Energy melee myself... great damage, one very good AoE and you'll have very little to worry about in sacrificing a few HP to use energy transfer as you are a defense based set. Not to mention with the new invention system and defense as your primary defense (allowing the use of red fortune recipes) you can get near perma hasten which means near perma hoarfrost! Fire is a great set, but I think energy melee surpasses it in DPS and actually, the other set I'd recommend is Superstrength. With rage, you have an almost permanent buildup (especially with IO's) and some good crowd control as well. For me, its either EM or SS for an Ice armor tank.
After issue 12, one good combo may be Ice armor/Dark melee as defense and the -tohit debuff should combine for near ghostlyness goodness.

I love stone armor. Even before granite armor you can take a whole lot of punishment, and you have either good defense or good resistance to all of the common types of damage in the game.
The slowness is due to Rooted. Rooted is a great power. It makes you virtually knockback/knockdown/mez/web/disorient/endurance drain-proof. It also makes you regenerate health at a much faster rate. With it you can keep doing damage and drawing aggro no matter what gets thrown at you. It's the power that makes the other tankers look like wannabes (I'm kidding about that, mostly). The downside it that it slows you waaaaaaaayyyyy down and you can't fly, teleport, jump or run at superspeed.
What some people forget about it is that it's a toggle. When you're rushing into a fight, turn it on. When you're running with your teammates to the next mob, turn it off.
The other issue with stone armor is that prior to getting granite armor, you have a whole lot of toggles for the various types of armor you have. Here's where being a bit knowledgeable can be a very good thing. Knowing your enemies, specifically knowing what kind of damage they put out, and tailoring your armor accordingly is key. For instance, if you're rushing into a mob of Family, understand that they only dish out smashing and lethal damage, so you really only need rock armor and rooted. Brimstone armor, crystal armor and minerals won't help you and will only needlessly drain endurance.
One final note about Rooted: I've found that when fighting the Cabal it's best not to put down roots. They have such a tendency to run or fly around and attack from a distance. In that case all Rooted does is greatly lengthen the time you're taking damage and not dishing it out. In any other fight I start by toggling it on, though.
I'm an incurable altoholic, but most recently I've played as these characters:
Abana (hero, Champion), lvl 40 mag tanker, stone/stone/fit
Etain Echraide (hero, Virtue), lvl 21 mag controller, plant/therm
One Man Vs. The Mob (hero, Virtue), lvl 8 sci blaster, nrg/nrg/fly/stealth

Yes, you can teleport while using Rooted and/or Granite Armor. That is the reason most stone tanks/brutes take Teleport as a travel power, as it can help them get from one mob to the next pretty quickly.

Cabal do move around a lot, but they are also full of endurance drains, knockbacks, and various stuns. I seriously don't think you want rooted off, as you'll be on your back and stunned and drained fighting them without it. It may be harder to get to them, but you'll be much safer with it on. Just my experience.

You betcha its a good team build, two words, SNOW STORM. This is your AoE enemy anchor toggle. When a few slow enhances are placed in there it puts them on snail speed. Just make sure you call it out so that some (*@ing blaster or scrapper doesnt take him down first.
And Hurricane is a pretty good one as well, It will knock anybody close to you on their butts and -ACC on them as well. Great for corner pinning Lt's and Bosses.
The Illusion set can easily dish out the damage, I would recommend getting Hasten, your gonna want your PA up as much as possible. Flash is a great group hold, and illusion has one of the best Stealth powers. Spectral Terror is a good mob neutralizer. I have only had trouble solo'ing against an AV with mine.
Tank'ns my Bidness and Bidness is GOOD!

Ah. I was under the impression that rooted pretty much negated ALL travel powers. I stand corrected.

This is interesting, because it is so completely the opposite of my experience. I don't discount your experience; I'm just saying mine has been vastly different. When I first started out and insisted on staying rooted because it had always worked for me before, I would be protected but I'd have to leave battles unfinished because I couldn't reach one or two of them often enough to do lasting damage. I really didn't have much problem with knockbacks and was never stunned.
I would guess you had a ranged attack, which I didn't. I also wonder if you had crystal armor, as that would make a big difference.
