Sjeng's Art Commission Contest 500k+ in prizes!

Hello everybody, artists especially! 8-)

I've been saving up in GW to get a commission done of all my characters last year, but unfortunately, the commission was cancelled due to lack of time of the artist. So now I'm sitting on a lot of gold which I can either spend on stuff for my HoM, and probably be disappointed by the things I'll get for it in GW2, OR host a drawing contest and hopefully get a lot of enthousiastic artists to draw some group portraits of my characters for me. Needless to say, I choose option number 2!

Here's the deal: PLEASE READ CAREFULLY I have 10 characters (one of each profession) which would love to be drawn in a group portrait. What I'd like to see:

- a scene in which they're all together. Fully in view (not just busts or faces).
- What they're doing is entirely up to the artist. I'll make some suggestions later on just to get an idea, but you're totally free in the setup, as long as it's within the world of Guildwars.
- Minimum: line-drawing.
- Preferably: coloured in.
- Style: anything you like. Although I prefer more "realistic" drawings, anything is allowed from scetches to anime art (even chibi).
- Can be hand drawn - scanned - digitally coloured or completely digitally drawn, whatever suits you best. I would like the end result in .PSD though (or a compatible format so I can play around with the end result in photoshop, for wallpapers, signatures and such).
- Resolution at least 1280x1024, preferably higher.
- When the contest is over the winners will be announced here and the prizes will be given away in my Guild Hall for safety (I will send you a message and a guest invite if you have won to plan a time we can meet to hand out the prize).
- The judge will be me and perhaps some guildies of mine if I can't decide ^^
- I've posted a thread on Guru and INCgamers as well to give the people there an equal chance of winning. link: Click me and Click me

The location / surrounding of the scene is also entirely up to you.
Some examples as promised:
A battle scene, a relaxing scene (campfire, pub, festival, whatever), a certain location (Shing Jea island, Shiverpeaks, Charr homelands, etc.), a dungeon perhaps, anything goes, as long as it's a guild wars related area. Artistic freedom of imagination is of course allowed.

Now, the most important part: the PRIZE MONEY:

1st prize: 300k in ingame gold!!
2nd prize: 100k
3rd price: 50k
4th prize: 20k
5th prize: 10k
6th-10th prize: 5k

Everyone who participates beyond the 10 first places also get a prize!!! (I have some jewels, such as rubies, sapphires, onyxes, diamonds). Nobody will be left unrewarded!!!

Deadline:
The contest will run as long as it takes for people to finish their work for now. I will eventually add a deadline if there are enough participants. There's no rush. (I'm thinking max. deadline july...ish).

Important notice:
There is one condition for this contest to start, which is that I need at least 8 serious participants across the forums where I posted this contest. If I have enough participants, I'll give the green light for this contest (so don't start drawing right away!). After that, you can still enter the contest, and I'll set the deadline.
If there aren't sufficient entries I might consider not giving the first prize but instead the second or third prize (which I hope is not needed ofcourse).
This is just a little safeguard for me, so I won't be forced to hand over the first prize to a single participant, and maybe be left with a disappointing result. It is after all supposed to be a contest, so I'll need contestants to make it interesting. I hope you'll understand. The more, the merrier! :)

Here are some screenshots of my characters. I will add more if needed. You can also pm me ingame if you need to make some screens yourself.

Good luck!!! :D

Of course not. I will invite the winners to my own guild hall as a guest, and hand over the prize money there.
Besides, it's all over these forums, so Anet can always READ if in doubt, but I'm 99,99% sure nothing will happen.
Besides contests like these are plenty!
Don't worry ;)

I think he mean that if Anet see it, they'll think he sell the gold, as a alrge amount of money is transferred for nothing in return.

Another thing i have to fix when i notice it tomorrow...

I'm not sure, but isn't this against eula? At least what you are doing is "sorta" "trading" in game money to gain something outside the game. In this case it isn't real life currency, but a drawing. :P

Sounds silly, but im not the one who makes laws.

I got 300K that im most likely not spending on anything until the beginning of GW2 when it is clear what you get in there, but im just not dedicated enough to this game to actually request portraits of all my characters, still, if you've spend ages on each character, and its basicly interwoven in your life, no surprise you'd might be tempted having a poster above your bed of those characters.

Temporarily Sir! Temporarily, it was resolved within a few hours when the support ticket barrages started firing, it appears there Is an actual auto-ban system of sorts, as people making transactions, and for instance sharing websites www. and so on in local chat can get banned in seconds, however when the bans are being investigated they find out it was not in place and remove them.

LaZy Nation for sure isn't the only one affected, they just get it more frequent cause they give out large sums of cash.

The prizes seem a bit off, 6th-10th place only get 5k while people below 10th place get rubies etc. worth more than 5k.
Also, if I was submitting something I wouldn't want to do a whole group shot 1280x1024 just to get 5k/10/20k. Even though I'm not submitting an entry anyway, it just seems a little off for anyone who gets 4th-10th place.

Pickletron,
Consider your self lucky to even get something for placing 4th or more. People are just never happy :(

Usually, if you do something competitive (like sports) in your life you'll understand that winner gets all, and in the end nothing else matters.

I think that this "event" is great and has generous rewards !

LOL, thanks :P. My guild is called the "Limburgse Jagers" (we have a site and a forum if you're interested in info).

@the rest: As far as prize money goes, I thought most jewels were already worth less than 5k.
I might reconsider raising the prize money though. But like I said: everyone who enters gets something.

For now, I have 14 entries already, so it's going the right way:

satomz
Nikhera

Guru:

Rayala
Rohan Boru

character personalities

Someone at INC asked me for some info on my characters, and if I RP'd. I don't really, but I do have some made-up backstories for each of them, and a short personalty deion. So for those of you who like to read about them for inspiration, here's their story:

The History of my characters
by Sjeng

Huubke Dn Helle:
In the lands of Ascalon, before the Great Searing, there lived a soldier in service of King Adelbern, trained in combat and protecting the people of Ascalon against all sorts of monsters threatening their everyday lives.
His name, Huubke Dn Helle.
He had learned to be a soldier in the land of Rin, where he mastered the wielding of sword, axe and hammer. Later he was posted in Ascalon, to aid the King in the war against the Charr.
It was a few days before the Great Searing that Huubke met an elementalist by the name of Sonya Fireheart, who had been studying at the Nolani Academy for 7 years, untill she was drafted by the King's army to help in the fight against the Charr Invasion. Huubke decided a beautifull mage like her could use a strong bodyguard like himself, so he took it upon himself to aid and guard her in the Charr war. When the Searing hit Ascalon, and war raged at it's fullest, Huubke and Sonya decided to form a guild and recruit willing soldiers and adventurers. They quickly found a monk by the name of Tietske Tietsma and a ranger named Pieke Potloed.

Huubke is the typical warrior who fancies himself the hero of the day. His burly attitude is kind of a compensation for his short size. What he lacks in length, he makes up in charisma. He likes a good brawl, but luckily for his comrades, he doesn't rush into battle (a lot). He's the front man, the title hunter.

Sonya Fireheart:
At the age of 12, Sonya was living a peacefull life on a farm in Ascalon, in Lakeside County near Ashford Abbey. She spent a lot of time exploring the lands around her home, and came to take a liking to the snow-covered mountains of Wizard's Folly. Her parents often worried about their adventuring daughter, and warned her about the dangers of the mountains. There had been rumours of great golems made of ice and stone, that would sometimes attack an innocent traveller if provoked.
On an exceptionally foggy autumnday, Sonya had been exploring quite a lot, and discovered a mysterious tower in Wizards Folly. Dispite the warnings of her parents, she went to investigate. She couldn't see far in the thick fog, so she moved slowly and carefully towards the looming tower. It was a great double spire, that looked as if it had been made of ice. At the top, there seemed to be some sort of chamber, but she couldn't find an entrance anywhere. She imagined it to be the home of some great wizard, who had conjured the stone and ice elementals that were wandering the lands.
All of a sudden she heard shouting. She froze in place and looked around for the source of the sound, but she couldn't see anything but fog. She heard it again, and this time she thought she recognized her mother's voice. She jumped, and ran back the way she came, taking great strides to avoind tripping over rocks. She ran into a little clearing, and to her shock she saw her mother standing against a mountain wall, surrounded by 2 gigantic shapes. Her mother screamed in fear as she saw her little daughter, who she had been looking for all afternoon, and tried to run to her, but the ice elements were blocking her way. "Run Sonya! Run home!", she yelled, but Sonya couldn't do anything. She panicked and looked around for something to distract the ice elementals with. She threw a rock at one of them, but it just bounced off it's icy back. They closed in on her mother, who now crouched in a ball against the base of the wall. Sonya felt the fear of losing her mother creeping in her mind, and she desparately wanted to save her and scare away the golems. She picked up a long branch lying near a tree, and ran screaming at the nearest golem. Blind with fear and anger she swiped it at her foes. The elementals turned around to face her, seemingly surprised by this interruption. But instead of attacking her, they stood motionless and she continued waving her branch around. Sonya closed her eyes and screamed: "Run, mother, run!". She felt a sudden heat blazing up inside of her, and feared she would die at that very moment. She braced for the impact of a great icy arm, holding her branch out in fromt of her. Then there was the sound of a great thunder, and a flash of red she could see even through her closed eyes. Then silence...
When she opened her eyes, she didn't see the golems anymore. She saw her mother staring at her unbelievingly. No, she wasn't staring at Sonya, but rather at the branch she was holding. Sonya moved her eyes from her mother to the branch, and saw it was completely charred and smoking. Only then did she notice the puddles of steaming water at her feet.
It wasn't long after that her parents decided to take Sonya to the Nolani Academy, and ask the scholars there what it could have been that she had done that day. The scholars looked extremely happy after hearing the story, and told her she had an extraordinary gift: the gift to manipulate the elements. She learned she had unwittingly cast a fireball with her makeshift wand, instantly melting the ice golems. They offered her a scholarship, in return for her aid to the King in times of need. She quickly accepted, as she was overjoyed at hearing she had the makings of becoming an elementalist, just like the wizard in the great tower of Wizards Folly.
It had been 7 years at the Academy, when Sonya graduated as a Fire Mage, and the King had decreed that every man and woman able to fight the Charr threat must come to Ascalon City to enlist in his army, and so it was that Sonya traveled to Ascalon City.
After having served the King during the Great Searing, she cofounded a guild called the Limburgse Jagers, and gained many friends over time through this guild. Fellow adventurers, warriors and wizards of all kinds, joined her and with the aid of her friends of the Limburgse Jagers guild, she has since defeated the Undead Lich that threatened Tyria, and Shiro in Cantha, and is now on her way to fight Abaddon's forces in Elona.

Sonya is a headstrong fire mage. Not quite as hot-tempered as her colleague Cynn, but she can still burn down the house... literally. She does like to travel with her friends though, she has a strong connection with her guild. She is not the type to have arguments with friends, instead she vents her emotions on the creatures she faces in battle. Firestorms and meteor showers and lots of panicked monsters running away in flames are a common result of this. Fortunately there are plenty of monsters to kill, so she can still be quite charming in company.

Pieke Potloed is a Tyrian born ranger, who spent a lot of time honing his archer skills in the catacombs of Ascalon and roaming the lush forests. Always quick with a joke, the funloving Pieke regularly enjoys a cold ale with friends. After the Searing, Pieke traveled through Tyria, and met up with his fellow Ascalonian adventurers and Guildmembers, Huubke D'n Helle, Tietske Tietsma and Sonya Fireheart. During a daring adventure in the Underworld with trusty allies from befriended guilds he managed to charm his pet Black Widow "Little Tank".
After having fulfilled the Flameseeker Prophecies, Pieke travelled to Cantha, along with his friends Huubke, Tietske and Sonya, where they were soon involved in another adventure. It was during the search for the cause and perhaps a cure to a mysterious affliction that tormented the lands of Cantha, that the heroes met three brave travellers from Shing Jea Island: the macabre necromancer Ingel Oet Mestreech, the deadly assassin Sjeng De Nachraof and the ritualist queen Kitsune Orihime.
Pieke's latest adventures have taken him to the desert lands of Elona, where he has joined the Sunspear warriors in their quest to stop the land from succumbing to Abaddon's Nightfall. But Pieke has long since wanted to return to the lush lands of Ascalon, and has set his mind on returning to Ascalon once his crusade in Elona is done, to find undiscovered regions north of the Great Northern Wall, hoping to find lands yet untouched by the war with the Charr. Rumours of strange lands and races have reached many adventurers, and many Limburgse Jagers are getting ready to travel to these new undiscovered lands.

Pieke is the funny one. A tall ranger with a love for ale, he likes to tell slightly exaggerated stories of his adventures. Nobody believes them though, because most of his guildmates were there when his "heroic deeds" took place. This is not to say he's not a good fighter, he is an experienced ranger, who knows the tricks of the trade. He loves the Charr homelands as he loved Ascalon as it was before the Searing. He spent much time in those lands when he was in training (especially with the bear hunters, sharing an ale or two...).

Sjeng De Nachraof is an assassin born in Kaineng City. He grew up in the slums and alleys of the city, and learned stealth and dagger mastery in the streets, competing with Am-Fah and Jade Brotherhood gangs for territory. As soon as he reached adulthood, his parents sent him to the Shing Jea Monastery, fearing the new plague that threatened Cantha, to hone his skills as an assassin under the tutelage of the great Master Togo.
On the island he befriended a young necromancer called Ingel Oet Mestreech and a mysterious queen ritualist called Kitsune Orihime. When both women finished their training, and left the island to help Togo find a way to defeat Shiro, Sjeng decided he wanted to travel the world first. During his training at the Monastery, he learned of the Limburgse Jagers guild through a group travelling adventurers, who recruited Ingel and Kitsune into their guild. One of the Jagers, a ranger called Pieke Potloed, told him he had fought in Cantha together with other guildmates, and was planning on going to Elona. So, Sjeng joined their guild as well, and boarded a merchant ship to Elona. There, he adventured along with the Jagers, and fought Abaddon, after having met many heroes who accompanied him on his journey through the lands of Kourna, Vabbi and wastelands called the Desolation. There, Sjeng learned more techniques and found an ancient armor, once worn by soldiers from times long past, when Turai Ossa fought the undead armies of Palawa Joko. Eager to tell of his adventures, and showing his new armor to his friends, he returned to Cantha, where he met two other Limburgse Jagers. Together they are now on a quest to defeat Shiro...

Sjeng is a quick-witted mind. Not only fast with the blades, but also with a smart response. He likes to hang around with Pieke, and when in a festive mood, their jokes escalate quickly, and the ale flows richly. He's a person who constantly tries to improve his skills, learning new skill combo's, even trying different weapons from time to time.

In the deserts of Elona, the darkskinned Harie Bom Barie was raised in Kourna, and learned very soon in life the importance of good leadership. He joined the Sunspears after a short time in the Kournan army, which he left on account of a dispute between him and his captain. Harie felt the Kournans did not train their recruits to be good soldiers, but only as mindless grunts following orders blindly, without questioning the morality of their orders. So he left Kourna behind and travelled to the island of Istan. As a soldier in the Sunspear army, Harie always looked up to his strong, disciplined and righteous superiours, admiring their tactical leadership skills. Their capability of leading and motivating the Sunspears in such ways that insubordination was never an issue, not even thought of, motivated Harie to learn the ways of the paragon. He wanted to lead his troops into victory by inspiring pride and willingness to protect their land into them, not fear and blind obediance such as the soldiers of Kourna. Harie spent much of his life on Istan, climbing up in the ranks, and becoming a general. He joined the Limburgse Jagers guild to offer his tactical guidance and commanding expertise in their various missions throughout the lands of Elona, Cantha and Tyria.

Harie is the old, fatherly kind. He's a tactical genius, a true paragon, motivating and leading his guildfriends in battle. When in the guild hall or at other meetings, he likes to share his war-stories with the younger members. He is very kind and has lots of knowledge. He has a great admiration for Togo of Shing Jea Island, and is proud to help in the fight against Shiro and other villains.

Roei Toei, a dervish in the Limburgse Jagers guild, was found as a child on the island of Istan by a Sunspear patrol, under the command of Harie Bom Barie, a captain at the time. She was not of Elona, as her light skin color proved, but orphaned by corsairs who had raided a merchant ship traveling to Istan. The Sunspears that found her, witnessed a corsair ship sailing away from a burning ship near the Istani coast. They informed their captain and investigated the remains of the ship, where they found a small child. Harie adopted her into his home, and raised her to be a warrior, so she would never have to be afraid of corsairs again. Roei Toei is not her actual name, but a nickname given to her on account of her bright red hair and her fiery temperament. Her real name remains unknown. She learned of the five gods and was fascinated by the gods Grenth and Balthazar. She chose the Scythe as her weapon, and learned the ways of the dervish in the Sunspear army. Her affinity with mysticism soon granted her the power to take on the form of an avatar of the five gods, giving her divine power for a short amount of time.
After completing her training on Istan, she wanted to discover her true origin, and left Elona to travel the world. Harie could not leave her and joined her on her travels. They arrived in Cantha, where they met the assassin Sjeng De Nachraof, also a member of the Limburgse Jagers, who turned out to have been to Elona, fighting Abaddon alongside the Sunspears. The three are now fighting their way through Kurzick and Luxon territory, in pursuit of the villain Shiro.

Roei is a very lively girl, in her mid-twenties. She loves adventure, action, combat, but also relaxing and dancing with friends. She has taken a liking to the spirit of the Norn people, and fought at their side to gain honor and respect. This has granted her the right to have an amror made for her by Norn making. She often fights with the blessing of her favourite gods, taking on the form of their avatars.

It is not certain where the ritualist queen Kitsune Orihime originally hailes from. Her physical appearance betrayes the fact that she is Canthan, but little is known about the exact place of her birth. She remains secretive about it, only sharing the fact that she is a queen from an uncharted realm somewhere near the Kurzick forests. She claimes to have travelled to Shing Jea to become a powerful ritualist so she could be a strong queen to her country. During her training in the Monastery, she became friends with Ingel Oet Mestreech and Sjeng De Nachraof, both native Canthan students. She joined the Limburgse Jagers together with them when a travelling group of Jagers from Tyria visited Cantha in search of new adventures and recruits. She has followed Ingel on her quests through Cantha, then Tyria, and is now in Elona. Kitsune is a quiet, secretive lady, with strong sympathy for the Kurzick culture. She's a team player, who likes to be in the company of her guildmates. Her profession enables her to be very versatile, although she still has a lot to learn.

Kitsune is the silent type. She is quiet and mysterious like many native Canthan folk. She lives by courtly etiquette, but is known to sometimes forget about that when in good company. She is a great dancer, and she loves the rituals of the Shing Jea Monastery. She often visits Canthan shrines for prayer to her gods.

Ingel Oet Mestreech is a Canthan necromancer, trained in Shing Jea Monastery. A little impatient and very skilled in the dark arts, she finished her training quickly and joined the Limburgse Jagers guild as soon as she could. She became good friends with Kitsune Orihime, a ritualist that shared Ingel's interest in dark rituals, the afterlife, death and the spiritual. Kitsune first specialized in communing with the spirits from the Underworld, and Ingel called forth undead minions from the corpses of fallen foes. While they share many interests, they look like opposites: Ingel has snowy white hair, and Kitsune has hair as dark as night itself. After Ingel had travelled through Cantha, honing her necromancer skills as she went, and fighting Shiro with her guildmates, she travelled to Tyria, to help the people there with their quests. The Limburgse Jagers that had visited Shing Jea to recruit new members had told her many stories about Tyria, it's lore and it's people. She was intrigued to learn about a mysterious undead Lich Lord that was threatening the land, and wanted to prove to herself she was a better necromancer by beating him in combat.
She succeeded with the help of het guild, and immediately after she boarded a ship on it's way to Elona. One of her fellow students from Shing Jea, Sjeng De Nachraof, had left Cantha right after his training to visit Elona, and brought back many stories to the guild. Ingel is now fighting alongside the Sunspears searching for new dark knowledge to fight Abaddon's minions.

Ingel is a true necromancer. Sinister and dark, she takes pleasure in combat, especially when she can exploit the corpses of the fallen enemy to create minions that aide her as her slaves. She has a dark sense of humor, loves All Hallow's Eve, and is always looking forward to the return of Mad King Thorn. She wishes she'd had the opportunity to explore the catacombs of Ascalon, but those have been destroyed during the Searing. She will certainly visit the dungeons in other parts of Tyria as soon as she can, in search of new sinister creatures to fight.

Tietske Tietsma is a small Krytan monk, who has spent some years in the Ascalon Academy before the searing. She joined the Limburgse Jagers soon after they were founded by Sonya Fireheart and Huubke Dn Helle. She always travels together with fellow guildmembers, feeling she should aid them in their quests, healing wounds, curing conditions and protecting from harm.
Although small, Tietske has the skill to take on entire mobs on her own, using the widely known "invincimonk" technique. This requires hard practice and meditation, and she would rather help out adventuring parties by healing and protecting, but on occasion she is known to fight alone to acquire certain much-sought after items or skills. Like Sonya, Huubke and Pieke, she has visited Tyria and Cantha, defeating both the undead Lich Lord and the villain Shiro, and has recently learned of their return as minions of Abaddon in the hot deserts of Elona. Armed with knowledge from her earlier adventures, she has followed the Limburgse Jagers to Elona, and is now making her way towards Vabbi.

Tietske is a the most caring person of the group. This has of course lead to her choice of becoming a monk. She loves culture, music and art. She also likes animals and social events. Coming from a quiet town, she's fascinated with the splendour of great cities such as Lion's Arch, Kodash Bazaar, House Zu Heltzer and Cavalon. She's happiest when her friends are having a good time. Because of her caring, giving personality, the rest of the team love her. They look upon her as a little sister, wanting to protect her, while in fact she herself is the one mostly protecting her friends in battle.

Miss Claire Voyance is a young, beautiful mesmer, who also hails from the lands of Ascalon. She always wanted to learn magic, and decided that training to become a mesmer was the best way to achieve that. She wanted to be the best, so as soon as she learned her first skills, she went out to fight the Charr, who were pressing south, invading Ascalon. At first she trained with fellow students from the Ascalon Academy, later as her skills got better, she ventured into Charr territory alone. Her companion, a black bear she charmed in Wizards Folly on a quest for more knowledge, always accompanies her on her journeys.

Claire is the newest member of the group. She loves art and music as much as Tietske, and wishes to visit House Zu Heltzer when she is finished training in Tyria. She loves fine clothing, always saving up to buy the newest fashion (don't all mesmers :P). She's a seductive lady, using her flair to mesmerize the enemy, and then draining their power and preventing them from casting spells or fighting.

As far as I know, you don't get banned for buying gold anyway, only selling.

Look, I don't know exactly what Anet's policy is when it comes to handing over large amounts of gold ingame, but I assure you, these contests are plenty, and nobody was ever banned for winning sums of gold.
If it would make the participants feel better, I will even contact someone from Anet (through their wiki page or otherwise), to inform them about this contest, and to let them know who is participating, and that there will be large gold prizes, so the participants will not have to worry about possible bans.

Untill now, I've only seen positive reaction to contests like these (especially on Guru). Gaile has on occasion replied in topics that were about contests.
There have been many festival games, and events even, organized by guilds or individuals, and people hand out all sorts of prizes for participating.

It's supposed to be a fun contest, there's no real life monetary gain to be had at all, so you really don't have to worry ;)

I also can't draw, but I CAN assemble something using screenshots of your 10 characters.

Here is one I did for My Guild a long time ago. I've also gotten better with my paint shop abilities since.

Take a look and let me know if it's something you would be interested in.

Lol, my my, a lot of paranoid people here :P

Let me reassure you: these kind of contests have been around for a long time and nobody ever got banned for them. It's completely safe, and not against the EULA.

I know a lot of people from Lazy got banned for huge transactions of gold (100k)

If you give something for the cash, justa about anythign they will not "Auto" ban you since it will think ur trading.

Actually, it's supposed to be hand drawn (on paper or digitally). But feel free to try your hand at anything. I promise you I'll always save some kind of reward for your effort. (I love your animated signature btw. very nice indeed).

I've tried them, and they seem to work fine here (although imageshack can be a bit slow from time to time).
I'll msn them to you if I see you online. I'll mail them to that address as well to be sure ok?

Another contestant, fantastic ^^

edit: your email bounced... I'll try to catch you on msn.
