Scamming attempts increasing - why?

there have always been scammers, still are and will always be... just now since last few weeks the amount of scammers have increased dramatically; for some reason.

seriously, i don't pve that extremely much but when i do a fow run here or uw run there and afterwards try selling my ectos & shards...there are always more people trying to scam. it's pathetic really.. u know how it is: they say they will pay 5k per ecto and put 5g in trade or say that the trade keeps canceling itself so you must go outside into an explorable area and he will ask you to drop the item and he will drop the cash, then he will quickly pick up his gold and then shadowstep to you and pickup your item before you even realize what happened. to not talk about all the people that never pay for their runs, i don't even run cof anymore.

that has never happened to me but the attempts are increasing per day, i don't know why. do you?

people scam because they get frustraded from failing or getting unlucky at farming or whatever they're doing to try and earn gold so they recure to thievery and scam?

the thing is, i laugh at them when they try to fool me but you wouldn't believe how often people get scammed because they're impacient or in a hurry, or just stupid... and then get themselves banned due to verbal abuse or waste their time reporting them. reporting to anet, does this bring anything? no..they don't care IMO
i'd say if you open a service to the community with your own rules you'd have to pay for the consecuences(gettign scammed) as it's not officialy hosted by anet themselves.

it's so sad to see how low gw is dropping in terms of community...for example people ripping others off for like a few gold coins and then being proud of it...ofcourse there are still many nice and fair people, but they're getting rarer by the hour.

what are your views on this?

I've never personally been scammed but the times that i have almost been are too many to count. The scammers in game are usually bums that steal in RL and will end up in jail or have already been in jail or probation... I just ignore them and rarely trade.

The only occasion i was scammed was a very serious attempt;

Someone said: ''Free Gold 1K who wants'' so i trade him cause you know, heck you might just get summin', AND he only gave me 10 gold, that's a scam right there!

On my part honesty is the guideline in everything i do..
I have faced few 5g ecto buyers.. i deal lots of greenies and maby im lucky but so far no scam attempts (only with ectos)..

Some times ppl waste my time.. but that cant be called scamming.. anyways i honestly hope its not getting more regular..

ive never been scammed but ive helped people who have.
i seen lots of people askin for advice on what to do when scammed. i help out. all i can say is be mroe careful and try to make pitstops in hard to reach locations when running and ge th emoney there. that way they cant say youll just run of as soon as your paid and they cant run of on you.
i usually do runs for guild or allaince memebrs only and for free. i can do beacons to la and desert runs and probs other is i tried.

You never know. But still if you give anything to the "scammed" be it advice only, you can never be too careful.

Players are too lazy to go out and make money on their own. Either by actually playing the game or even farming for an item they want or just plain money. Seems that the community has fallen into a state of decadence.

I think I was only scammed once and it was very early on when I began playing Guild Wars. After that I became more aware when trading other people. You just have to pay attention to what you do now and that's basically it. Be aware of the scams that go around and triple check the trade menu if necessary.

There's currently a thread on GWGuru about the "Most pathetic scamming attempts." Check it out if you want to be enlightened.
The unofficial Guild Wars Wiki also has a section to give players insight on how to avoid these scams.

Just be smart about what you're doing while trading and have common sense. When someone wants to try on one of your weapons to see if it fits their character, that should strike as being a bit odd. Same with someone requesting that you drop an item on the ground.

the scammers are starting to get out of control.
I wonder how long before Anet decides to do something about them. Personally, I just want the ability to report scammers the same as abusive language people.

i love scammers, they keep me entertained. I have never been scammed but people have tried to scam me before. some guy was messing me around with an ele sword, it was r10, so i was selling it for 25k at the time, just wanted to get rid of it. he kept doing 25g, 250g, 2.5k etc.

i kept saying to him, 25k, or nothing, yet he persisted to mess me around, so i kept submitting, then cancelling on him, eventually i put in a crappy r5 longsword and sold it to him for 2.5k :P

he kept pming me calling me a haxor scammer... was awesome

Scammers log out immediatly when they scammed someone. And for the /report system the person has to be in the same town/district as you.
Maybe they can update the report system to recent teammates/tradepartners.

Ive been scammed for 80k once but my friend managed to get them back for me. After that scam i have never been again.

I swear, SOMEONE IS HOAXING MY POSTS TO MAKE MY GRAMMAR LOOK BAD!

when in a run sometimes the runner says pays half way which kinda stops the scam. in CoF just say pay before boss. and in games people try to do a drop trade and scam not just GW. torches was one :P

Has scamming really gone up? I basically quit GW and have been focusing on Magic the gathering, specifically, my Morningtide/Lorwyn Treefolk Deck (forthose of you who know what that means).

I have been scammed once and that was for a r. 9 Perf fellblade. Yeah, I was mad.. >.<

I got scammed once with one of those pay half before the Droks run and half after. I was a noob and did not realize that a level 9 warrior with starter armor could not make that run.

I laugh about it now but back then I was pissed. Anyway I pretty much just ignore them now. If we all ignored them maybe they will go away!!!

A while ago my friend got scammed his account. The scammer promised him he would teach him how to "dupe" his Destroyer Sword (back when they were 150k) so he said they would try testing it in an explorable area, My friend would trade him 100g and then the guy would drop 100g on the ground so it looked like he actually "duped" it, then eventually they tried it with 100k and he didn't drop it... so then he played the part of his dad and told my friend were he would get an "item restore" he tried it and it was GWAreannet@gmail.com my friend not realizing it was Gmail... he gave the scammer his account info. Long story short the scammer took over a couple hundred k of items and deleted all this character every single one with at least one set of prestige armor.

He quit the game for a couple of months and now only gets on when i beg him to.
