Video Game Violence?
Okay, so the story is my friend gets an ISS because he was thinking that adults are stupid for blaming video games and the internet on devestatingly stupid things kids do. It was about a minute until the teach started to talk about GTA and gangs and stuff, so my friend goes "your totally right, 'cause the Devil was definately playing Grand Theft Auto when he tempted Adam and Eve to eat from the tree."
Immediately after this the teacher sent him to the principals office to "collect what he was earning" (teachers words, not mine)
So my question to all of you are; why are indirect causes blamed as the reason when sometimes some people are just plain stupid?
Anyways, Video Game Violence? Who to CALL? JACK THOMPSON Sir, the man with the anti-plan, he will ruin everything that works based on Pixels and Polygons.
This discussion will be unpromising in constructive replies, but will be promising in length on endless arguments and so on.
My View, it could've just aswell been blamed on the following subjects, subjects are also viable to be mixed;
- Religion
- Terrorism
- Group Persuasion
- Acting Tough
- Internet
- Impulsive/Erratic behavior
- Playing war while young
- Speak First, Think Later
- All kinds of things i am too tired to name.

Hmm, if I could rate a post for more than 10 I could. Most of this is true, but on the slip on why he was gettin an ISS was because he was smartassing the teacher. Figures.
Sorry that you've just read a post by Hydras First!
People blame what ever so they don't have to take the wrap. A kid does something bad.. oh my blame video games instead of the parents just letting it happen. Sometimes the person is just messed up in the head.

You just pointed out two different opinions between two different people. Now I would solve this using my theory...however I'm not anywhere near discussing it yet. Thus I'll just say this much...
Every person has "the right". That right is divided between "Right and Wrong". Without the wrong, their would be no right and as opposite. My point is that, in this world, would it make sense for everyone to believe in the same thing and nothing else? Any thing else being of dis-agreement with what everyone believes and thus "it's wrong"?
Arguing against the teacher was a foolish move. Unless your friend could explain the meaning of life to your teacher, then I'm sure theirs nothing that would convince him otherwise. Thus he should have done what everyone else was doing...listening...not caring...and then forgetting that teacher even said what he did that day.
Ignorance doesn't solve problems...but at least it will help from causing them.
So my question to all of you are; why are indirect causes blamed as the reason when sometimes some people are just plain stupid?
because people are stupid...
the people who make up the causes are stupid. for every person that plays a violent video game, how many of them do you think go and try 'haduken' there someone to death?
if one person does something that almost imitates a game, its reason enough for people to start to jump on the bandwagon. Soon this will all be forgotten, and there will be another 'hot topic' for people to sell newspapers over and have people listen to them for.
the people who make this stuff up couldnt care less about the effects the games actually have, or the real solution to the 'made up' problem. All they want is a platform.
surely if video games are the cause of violence, then every known media should have the same effect, tv, films, books, even the people that place the blame on games have their outlet through some type of media, the news for example. the news itself probably makes people more aware of violence and problems than any other type of media in the world. Now surely without national news, people would feel safer. Would believe the world is a better place.
Yet they would never give up that platform if it meant they couldn't get the attention and the income they so desired. Every single person on this planet wants to be praised in some sort of way, they want to be recognised for something. Some do it by doing stupid things, and some do it by blaming stupid things on stupid people. As long as people are willing to listen.
How many times have you opened a newspaper to read a story that really made you feel good about the world? that there was some sort of hope out there? Everyday its nothing but death and war and problems. The more people read, the more dangerous the world becomes, the more people fear everyone else. I'm not saying that everyone lives in barricades in fear of their lives, but kids dont feel safe anymore on the streets because of what everyone reads in the papers.
So if kids cant go out as much, what should they do indoors? play video games? watch tv? the things that everyone says are bad for you?
its a never ending circle, as soon as something else happens in the world that people can make a fuss over and have an audience, the sooner the last problem will just be washed away and forgotten...
You know what i want to say about the video game haters, im not because i would get banned if i put down what i would say, it would not be pretty.

My View, it could've just aswell been blamed on the following subjects, subjects are also viable to be mixed;

- Acting Tough

From this list, I think, in this order, these are the major contributing factors:
1) Impulsive/Erratic Behaviour
You really have no control over this.
2) Group Persuasion/Acting Tough (pretty much the same thing)
Peer pressure makes people do things they don't want to - for example, theft, smoking, sex, drinking, violence
3) Religion
It can be argued that religion is the basis of every conflict. But that argument is way too long to post here, and way to complicated for most to understand, so isn't worth posting.
4) Speak First, Think Later
This pretty much adds to the previous ones. A simple slip of the tongue can be taken as malicious.
Video games may be guilty of introducing violence to their audience, but it is still personal choice to reenact the violence in games.
I remember seeing violence in games and movies when I was little but I was still able to distinguish between right and wrong. Violence in real life may resemble video games, but the act should always be blamed on the person not the game
it's like the NRA says, "It's not guns that kill people, it's people that kill people!"
but as Eddie Izzard says, "The gun helps a little bit..."
Regardless, I'm calling shenanigans on a crap teacher. Don't know bout teachers these days, but when I was in High school all two years ago, when I disagreed with something my teacher was talking about, we had a discussion on it, not an argument, or me going to the office, but a legitimate, real-world discussion between two(or more) people who have separate opinions...
And another thing, How could GTA be responsible for gangs? Gangs have been around for god-knows how long. I don't think the Hawkhurst Genge was playing GTA...
There are many contributing factors to the violence that every generation goes through. In todays world violent video games are a contributing factor. But they aren't the only ones.
Lack of discipline because of this belief that to spank a kid is abuse.
Lack of respect by todays youth for authority because the rights of parents to discipline has been taken away.
Violence in music, movies and television.
The list could go on.
But in short, videos games do play a small role. but they certainly don't hold all of the blame.
You have your entire life to be a jerk. So why don't you take today off?
On related news I've recently stumbled upon the answer to why Jack Thompson hates video games.
Seriously, people now a day's just have an opinion 'bout everything. Well, they always had opinions 'bout something, but now they also can more easily make it more known (especially if it's a bith sensational)!
They read something in the newspaper and they think they know the 'truth' and how to solve it/complain about it. So they all just throw it on the 'News' or the Internet (harhar, notice the irony).
And they don't even know half of the story (Mass Effect is a good example, not to mention very recent).
Theres the report on mass effect by fox "news". Can't wait to see what they do when they hear about Age of Conan, I mean... Blood and Gore,
Intense Violence, Language,
Nudity, Sexual Themes
Thats from the ESRB website alone, they aren't ever saying the drinking, gambling etc... sounds like the best game ever =D.
If you guys wanna get some more info on this sorta stuff, check out http://gamepolitics.com/ great site.
Edit: also something from the AoC forums: Why is it that most American parents prefer it if their kids are unexposed to violence more then sexuality? Is America THAT afraid of sex? (Goes on into a long winded convo that I won't repost.)
