| Cooking, Fishing, First Aid - are they worth it? |
|
|
|
Simple question are they worth investing any time into ? Got to admit the fishing thing has got to be one of the most mind numbingly boring things to do I've ever come across in a game. Cooking I can see the rewards may be worth it but theres little enough hours in the day as it is and the amount of drops from mobs of food and liquid has kept me amply supplied. First Aid I can see the point of but again I'd rather just sell the mats and use the potions I get through drops. In a raid situation I can see First Aid having it's uses but in the long run is it worth it?
I ask because I've been looking through the guilds on my server (Bloodhoof) and getting past the ones that only accept 70's I find alot of guilds ask what your rank in these professions are? So are they really worth any effort or can I continue blissfully ignoring them?
Thnx :-)

Yes, yes and yes.
I'll mention first aid first as i find it the most usefull. Typically while killing mobs i find i end up gathering more cloth that i use to make bandages there for my bandage supply is always well stocked. This means i very rarely need to buy or use food. On top of that first aid heals more health much faster than sitting to eat and if you need a quick boost in a fight aslong as your not under attack directly a quick bandage can stop downtime
Fishing next, you'd be supprised at the money you can make from fishing if you know where to go. Theres plenty of recipies that need fish and they can sell for a dewcent amount oh AH depending on your server. Typically i level fishing in large chunks after a while of leveling so i can be undisturbed by nearby mobs of just kill them quick if they come close.
And last cooking - Considering i'm leveling fishing why not level cooking at the same time with all the fish you've just caught.

First Aid - Definate yes. Basically almost what you would consider a requirement. I still bandage in long boss fights to take the stress off of the raid healers.
Cooking - The food drops you are getting at your level just replenish health, they offer no buffs. Straight from Raza's Roadkill Grille:
Blackened Basilisk
Requires Level 55
Use: Restores 7500 health over 30 sec. Must remain seated while eating. If you spend at least 10 seconds eating you will become well fed and gain 23 Spell Damage and 20 Spirit for 30 min.
"Seared to perfection!"
Ingredients: Chunk’o Basilisk
Roasted Clefthoof
Requires Level 55
Use: Restores 7500 health over 30 sec. Must remain seated while eating. If you spend at least 10 seconds eating you will become well fed and gain 20 Strength and Spirit for 30 min.
Ingredients: Clefthoof Meat
Warp Burger
Requires Level 55
Use: Restores 7500 health over 30 sec. Must remain seated while eating. If you spend at least 10 seconds eating you will become well fed and gain 20 Agility and Spirit for 30 min.
Ingredients: Warped Flesh
There are a lot of others, this is just an example. One thing that will be expected of any player will be to supply their own consumables. Buff foods are on the consumables list.
Fishing, as mentioned is a great money maker. And yes, the absolutely most boring aspect of the game. But other buff foods can be made and sold on the AH for good money as well:
Spicy Crawdad
Requires Level 55
Use: Restores 7500 health over 30 sec. Must remain seated while eating. If you spend at least 10 seconds eating you will become well fed and gain 30 Stamina and 20 Spirit for 30 min.
Ingredients: Furious Crawdad
Blackened Sporefish
Requires Level 55
Use: Restores 4320 health over 30 sec. Must remain seated while eating. If you spend at least 10 seconds eating you will become well fed and gain 20 Stamina and 8 Mana every 5 seconds for 30 min.
Ingredients: Zangarian Sporefish
Grilled Mudfish
Requires Level 55
Use: Restores 7500 health over 30 sec. Must remain seated while eating. If you spend at least 10 seconds eating you will become well fed and gain 20 Agility and Spirit for 30 min.
Ingredients: Figluster’s Mudfish
Poached Bluefish
Requires Level 55
Use: Restores 7500 health over 30 sec. Must remain seated while eating. If you spend at least 10 seconds eating you will become well fed and gain 23 Spell Damage and 20 Spirit for 30 min.
Ingredients: Icefin Bluefish
Golden Fish Sticks
Requires Level 55
Use: Restores 7500 health over 30 sec. Must remain seated while eating. If you spend at least 10 seconds eating you will become well fed and increase healing done by 44 and Spirit by 20 for 30 min.
Ingredients: Golden Darter
Having cooking and fishing leveled up also opens up 2 extra dailies that you can run for gold.
I also recommend going back and leveling fishing and cooking sort of behind your character leveling curve. It's a lot easier to level fishing if the mobs are so low they ignore you. And with all of the fish you catch leveling it, you will power level your cooking at the same time.

All 3 are definatly worth it, but their need differs according to your class.
Mages can pull food and water out of the ether, so cooking doesnt really help them as much as the others. However there are some higher level recipies that give them buffs to their spirit or spell damage. Hunters LOVE cooking as keeping a stock of good food can keep their pets happy for a lot longer than your standard stuff.
Cooking also gives you buffs that might tip the favour in your direction in a difficult fight. Or in one case, might have a humerous effect for those boring down times (deviate scale delight).
I've found that fishing is a good thing to do while your your waiting for the boat at harbours or your waiting for your res sickness to go. Most towns have a pool of water either near them or in them, and some high level crafting recipies need certain fish oils. You'll also find debris floating around in waters where you can fish and get beer, crates filled with goodies of even (if your lucky) a rare Find Fish skill book!
First Aid has saved my life on many occasions. Im a warrior who hardly ever teams up. I have no access to heals or cure poisons. A quick bandage or a antidote for a quick heal has really helped me. Plus, bandages sell for a more than the plain fabric.
If your a tailor though, first aid might compete for the fabric you'll need so you'll need to think about that.

This guide I compiled(Can't really say I wrote it, I just compiled info from different sources) should help you get from base ot 300 with references as to where certain levels need to be fished at. I checked to make sure all the links still worked.

They are all worth, fishing may not be as "useful" as the other two - especially first aid - but it offers great fun and many chests and Mr. Pinchy... =P

I concentrated on Cooking and First Aid as I was levelling. I have not levelled my fishing past 150! O.O So far, I am not hurting on the fishing. So, I say (IMHO) cooking and First Aid. Although as stated, cooking is easily levelled when paired with fishing.
The benefits form the recipes are actually quite good as your heading towards 70, but at 70, you'll be looking for every little edge you can get and will need them.
I don't worry about tyhe Goden Darters (for Golden Fish Sticks) because I have 4 guildies supplying me. In turn I provide their bandages (in Outland Netherweave is in great abundance) and their enchantments. Plus I provide mana oils, wizard oils, or brilliant wizard oils for raids. So it's a great balance.
It took me 4 guilds to find what I was looking for and I am having loads of fun. Finding the right guild is a pain but can be very rewarding once you find it.
Good luck on the levelling!!

Thanks all for the great answers! So I'll go with yes, yes and begrudgingly (fishing) yes! ;p
I had noticed a quest reward food item with a nice buff early in the game, I'm going to have to research recipes, find out which best suit my immediate solo needs and increase my levels. Blizzard sure know how to make a game that has enough things to keep you occupied.
Already started increasing the First Aid. I'm level 43 now so went back to farm for the Linen (Silverpine Forest - tonnes of low level humans at Ambermill) was very quick and easy - My trusty Voidwalker is such a nice tank, guess he now must have a name and it shall be George! Wool seems harder to find and a lower drop rate in the areas I've tried so far (higher level Humans/Humanoids in places like Hillsbrad and Arathi Highlands), I may try and solo a bit of Shadowfang Keep tomorrow as I recall wool dropping plenty there. Silk I have come across lots in the last few levels, Centaur in Desolace dropped loads while I was questing, haven't yet got enough wool to get up to that level to use Silk in First Aid. Once I find a good farm for the wool it shouldnt take long (145/150 atm).
Good thing about working on First Aid tonight was being able to mine things like copper and tin again (to smelt bronze) so I can get mats to keep leveling Jewelcrafting.
As far as getting in a guild goes I'm going to take my time, I'm enjoying just playing along and teaming up with random strangers every now and then (starting to get invites to dungeons now). I want to be comfortable with my class first, warlocks are fun to play and I'm intrigued by this notion of Crowd Control in instances and raids, it's a completely different kind of game mechanic for me. Already having fun even when I do fear something and it comes running back with adds, want to be avoiding that while in a team though.....
Thanks again for the answers, I'll research some recipes, read that fishing guide and see what can be best suited to leveling me up and being useful.

Thanks for all your help folks, after reading your info and doing some research I spent a few days working on these professions.
First Aid : 300/300 'Triage' was a great quest, took me until the third try to pass. Expensive as I had to buy the Runecloth (not at any area where it drops yet). Worth the effort as I come across alot of mageweave and I'm not short of heavy mageweave bandages now :)
Fishing : 263/300 Enjoyed the quest to get the expert book, lots of travelling but I found catching the 'rare' fish a hell of a lot easier once I did the quest to get :
Nat Pagle's Extreme Angler FC-5000
Binds when picked up
UniqueTwo-Hand Fishing Pole
93 - 140 Damage Speed 3.00
(38.8 damage per second)
Durability 55 / 55
Requires Fishing (100)
Equip: Increased Fishing +25.
Cooking : 275/300 presently stuck while I wait to move on to areas that contain the ingredients for the req 275 recipes.
Again thanks for all the help and feedback, I am currently well fed, don't go short of a bandage when needed and actually don't mind the fishing thing espicially when you catch stuff other than fish (got a few pearls handy for my jewelcrafting).
