| Creative process for a new latin toon or |
|
|
|
Many people can play just one character and level them to 50. Others, like me, just love the creative process, the background story, the uniform, the power sets… This is what got me addicted to CoX. Usually it starts with an idea in my head, an inicial concept that will just consume me till I flesh it out. Basically I start bugging my wife and friends with the idea, throwing random thoughts around till stuff begin to stick. From there, you begin to make the idea into a concept and from there into a toon! Now, thanks to Game Amp, I have access to a wider, wackier, creativer (if that is even a word) group of gamers to whom I can throw around ideas. So without further brown nosing…here’s the new idea.
Spaniard, Latino or Hispanic toon.
In the lines of Zorro, Vega (street fighter), Desperado (the Mariachi sequel) and Machete(Danny Trejo), Puss with boots, and even Tibolt (Romeo and Juliet, the new one). I want to make the Latin matador character without falling into the tipical stereotypes. As a latino (puertorrican with direct Sevillian and Gitano desent) I have always loved this type of characters yet none of my original tries, falled to make me happy. I want to go beyond the simple Zorro imitation, to many out there after the Dual Blades introduction. That and the fact that I find Zorro just goes better with fantasy than with Superheroes.
Random thoughts in the creative process?
Zipota is a Basque martial art of “questionable reality”. Relegated to Fighting games and Movies (the Spanish guy in The Quest) that looks a lot like Savate (French Kickboxing)
“Navaja Sevillana” of Sevillian Knife fighting is real fighting system around the use of the Spanish or Gypsy switch blade.
Bull fighting or “Paso Doble” . Although a lot of people condem bull fighting, You have to admit the cool image of the Matador. Same goes with the dance of Paso Doble. The arrogant stance, sleek look, coolness at an Nth level.
Gitanos or Spanish gypsy are a common image to relate to the theme. Everytime a Gitano takes a step in a movie or game, you can just hear the acustic guitar in the background.
Roses and thowing roses? Everytime you see a bullfighter or a Gitano, you and almost see the ground littered with roses. Also, there are loads of images of anime Spaniard like characters throwing roses as weapons.
More concrete thoughts on…
Archetype:
The toon must be a fighter. This reduces him to a Scrapper, Brute or Stalker. Tanks absorb agro and selflessly place themselves between the innocent and danger, not really the matador way of thinking. They might get into that position, only if it means getting the spotlight. Although Vega may cualify as a Stalker, his vanity/arrogance would not let his stay hidden for long. So I guess maybe Scrapper of Brute. Dual weapons (navaja sevillana or Machete) or Martial Arts (Zipota). Maybe spines (you know, roses have spines) maybe even claws (Vega?). As for secondary? Super Reflexes (dodging bull will give you that) or Willpower. Maybe an old gypsy blessing is regen or invulnerability.
Wait a moment, I DID mention Roses. How about a Plant/thorny Dominator? Take the whole rose and thorn thing to the next level. Not all Plant/thorny toons have to be plant like guys with green skin.
I also mentioned Desperado. Maybe a thug mastermind without the thugs? Maybe the thugs are the other Gitanos
Uniform:
Ok, What can we have to make him look the part without being stereotypical. For some reason I am drawing a blank here, just having some thoughts:
Belt: a wide belt
Shoes: use the Kung fu ones to make it look like matador shoes, maybe the folded boots (Puss in boats look, but that would look kinda French) If he has normal pants, go for the Cowboy boots.
Other than that…..blank
Here is where you come in, throw some ideas, no mater how absurd or farfetch something might come out from them.
Thanks for your help.

I'm definitely in favor of making any super-characters that are non-Anglo. I do like the idea of using Zipota. A martial arts style of "questionable reality" just adds to the mystique of the character.
As far as the look, I suppose you could do an internet search to get ideas.
I'm an incurable altoholic, but most recently I've played as these characters:
Abana (hero, Champion), lvl 44 mag tanker, stone/stone/fit
Etain Echraide (hero, Virtue), lvl 21 mag controller, plant/therm
One Man Vs. The Mob (hero, Virtue), lvl 11 sci blaster, nrg/nrg/fly/stealth
Ballplayer Reverend (hero, Champion), lvl 19 nat tanker, will/mace/speed

I would go with the
| QUOTE | | “Navaja Sevillana” of Sevillian Knife fighting is real fighting system around the use of the Spanish or Gypsy switch blade. |
Then you could even educate others by explaining the what he is all about in the background.
Hero and teacher...

Although the merc thing emediatly brought to mind Sarcastro (a character in "The Tick") and the image of "El Che" is a constant in the Antilles, that's not the line I am going for.
Ok, up to now we have Dual Blades. But what secondary? Is he a scrapper or a brute? Heroes are easier to level at low lvls, the old swere teams, but the arrogant matador thing leans more into the Villian style.
Super reflexes or willpower?
