Making a decision.

So, I've been playing CoH for a while, and decided it's time for a change. I want to go with the red side of the game, so here's my question.

I know that there is no single "best" archetype OR power set.

I'm looking to play an AT that will best suit my play style. My play style is quite simple, a whole lot of soloing, with a minimal amount of teaming.

My question for all the knowledgable villains is, what archetype(s) best correspond to my style of play?

I'm open to any and all suggestions.

RE: Making a decision.

I usually solo and find that it can be done fairly well with any of the villain archetypes if you adapt your play style. However, brutes and stalkers do fit into the solo mode a bit easier because of their built in survivability and protection from annoying mezzes.

Pinnacle
Shadomancer - lvl 39 dark/dark cor
Krimson Krush - Lvl 50 SS/Inv brute
Ice Angel- - Lvl 34 Ice/Nrg blaster
Protector
Blackberry- - lvl 38 plant/thorn dom
Pheobe Nix - Lvl 35 fire/fire brute
Boojum- - Lvl 31 crab soldier
Ebon Widow- - Lvl 25 widow
Neo Slash - Lvl 37 BS/regen scrapper
Guardian
Dark Rumour - lvl 36 DM/SR stalker

RE: Making a decision.

Well, thanks for the advice, and by all means, keep it coming. I decided to roll a brute and went for Fiery/Stone.

So far so good, having a little trouble with the end at the lower levels, but nothing that can't be fixed with stamina once I get into the Fitness pool.

I'm thinking that I'll slot mostly for Accuracy and End Reduction.

RE: Making a decision.

My play style is very similar to yours. Lots of solo, with just a hint of grouping thrown in when my brother is online. Here is what I have found...

Mastermind: My personal favorite right now. Having your own built in group makes playing easy. And, I find it to be very light on the Endurance. I never have to stop to recover my power.

Stalker: My brother is FLYING through the levels with his stalker. You can burn through missions due to the perfect stealth. He groups a bit more than I do, but solos very well in most missions. He does have problems with bank-jobs however.

In my opinion, if you want to play light and easy, Mastermind or Stalker is the way to go.

Thats a usual problem for brutes at lower levels. But yeah, slotting with stam can fix it up.

Anyways, you can become a solo master with MM's at 32. With a shivan thrown in, you can solo EB's, Heroes, and some AV's on Relentless.

Also, Stalkers can plow through mishes by skimming through to the boss, and from there just kill the boss, if needed get a glowie. Might not work with kidnap mishes and such, which could be a problem skimming to boss.

what?! no love for the dominators?! awww.....

mind/fire, mind/psi, fire/psi, grav/psi are just the ones i've tried. very, i mean VERY solo-able. on all of these builds i was running relentless missions by lvl 14. they are pretty easy on the end at lower levels and do decent damage. and if your quick, you can stack holds and mezzies on bosses and EBs.

RE: Making a decision.

I've gone to darkside about 5 weeks ago and do a mix of solo and team play. I have 5 toons, 1 dom (fire/fire), 1 corrupt (dark/ice), 1 brute (elec/elec) and 2 MM (bots/eng)(mercs/dark).
All are pretty good if you are careful and don't try to take on too many foes at once. I've taken down EB's and heroes with all of them.

RE: Making a decision.

So far the easiest time I've had soloing is my Bots/Poison MM (how Alkaloid heals a machine I'll never know). If I was going to make another MM for soloing that I think might be even easier, I'd try Thugs/Dark. Thugs as supposedly they do the most damage of the MM sets and Dark for the debuffs, hold and heal.

Stalkers seem fairly easy, though I've come close to dying a few times. I'm really beginning to like Assassin's Blades skill from the Dual Blades set. Nothing much more satisfying than walking up behind an even level hidden and one shotting him. Soon as your not hidden any more though, you better hope he doesn't have a whole lot of buddies close by.

My dominator seems the worst for soloing. Despite the fact he has crowd control, even with 3 mobs of even level at once, I'm lucky if I come out alive. That's at lvl 20.

Haven't done much with brutes or corruptors to be able to say.

Stone can be a hassle so solo with because your a lot slower, and you have -75.00% (i think) recharge on all your powers. I would probably go with Will Power, or Invulnerability.

Will Power has a very good set of defenses and with quick recovery, fast healing, and the fitness pool endurance will not be a problem.

I don't know a whole lot about invulnerability but from what i hear it is a solid set but can be end heavy.

RE: Making a decision.

bots have the highest dps of all the mm sets. nothing is better than bots, period. i would say bots/ff, bots/traps, bots/poison are the top 3 mm builds pve and pvp (not in that order).

willpower is my new favorite sceondary for brutes. RttC is uber. invul is pretty good to with all the resistance. electric armor has to be a very close second to willpower. i also hear that energy armor is pretty uber too, but i've never actually tried personally.

RE: Making a decision.

This is all IMO and is based on the idea of soloing, not degrading any already stated ideas or beliefs, etc. Although, personally ild suggest a bots/traps MM for soloing as its on its own one of the greast solo builds, including having been noted to solo deathsurge, as well as being decent for teaming, although not as well due to its slower play style, which brutes hate, degrading the overall usefullness of its teaming ability, although its still great, bots/bubbles, ss/fire has no problem with anything once it hits 32 or 35, although its the squishiest and sometimes the most end heavy, ss/ElA is one of the most self contained builds, fire/rad or fire/dark is best for corrs while i personally love my mind/psy dom which has no problem post 20 with end with the addition of drain psyche and 22 with staminia, stalkers are very easy to solo with, although the very thing that makes them good solo builds limits them to paper missions as story arcs often include many kidnap and EB/AV missions, which are a pain for a stalker before he gets his tier 9 and sometimes even with his tier 9.

Yes, Stalkers are easy to Solo with and some kidnap missions are a little on the harsh side, however, it depends on the build.

As for the EB/AVs....Soloing an EB with a Claw/XX is going to be a little difficult based on the overall damage, or lack there of the build. Spines/XX or EM/XX is easier to rack up the damage and take down an EB (speaking from personal experience on this one...darn Ballista!!!!).

AVs, well that's a totally different ballgame all unto itself, although I did Solo Barracuda, as an AV, with my Bots/DM MM :-)
