Not a real Guru, but I picked up a basic acer for under $200. It's a 20" nothing spectacular.

try newegg.com and pricewatch.com, new egg has alot of helpful tips and explinations on all the acronyms and such.. pricewatch is like a index of sites and they track prices on comparable models of this and that.

From what I have been researching most of the Flat Screens are basically the same with a variation of prices because of a brand name.
What I am more interested in is if anyone has encountered any problems and which brands they were. I don't think Im going to go any bigger than a 17" at this time, unless I can find a good deal on a 20" or so.

I have a 22 inch lcd flatscreen. It is a Westinghouse, and it cost me about 450$. i am very happy with it. The size is wonderful for everything from gaming to graphics applications. It has every type of hookup you could want, so no matter what kind of graphics-out you have, it will work fine.
I definitely encourage you to go flat, and to get the largest one you can comfortably afford. Once you go big, you will understand. I have a 17 inch screen on my laptop, and it feels really small now :) It is better to get as good as you can now, rather than having to upgrade sooner, and spending more money in the long run.

I personally prefer my old 19" CRT monitor (CRT: giant 100kg piece of plastic, tubing, and glass. Just like the intarblargs.) To be honest this 19" wide screen LCD seems kinda like a downgrade at times. I felt resolution and image quality was much better on my 10 year heater.
Then again, my parents picked these up for me and my bro (to save money on the electric bill) as a special 2 fer 1 deal at only $120. Of course the monitors are X2gen brand and the company that made them was already bankrupt when we bought them. So, I would say look for a good deal first and foremost, then when you've found something you like do some research on it to see what other people have liked or disliked about it. After that you should have a pretty good idea of whether that monitor is right for you.
In all honesty it's hard to go wrong with a flat screen. Just find something in your price range that catches your eye and you'll be fine.

I take it you're all dog people, except for Mzzkc that is?
I mean, no self respecting, god fearing cat-lover would dream of doing away with their CRT body toasters now would they?
Still happy with my two 20" Sony Multiscans that have been good enough for me and the cats since 1994 :-)
But if you must go for one of them shallow things, go for one that has all the new connector types, like DMI so it's future proofed. Also, with flatscreens for TV's there's some types where the color blue will fade over time and other little known issues that you might want to consider. Dunno if those translate to TFT though. The blue was plasma screens I think.

I guess they are trying to free up some space since they just moved into the new house and all. I had to upgrade my monitor as I went with a wireless connection to put the PC in the bedroom :) :) :)
Yeah, just make sure you look for future usage capabilities and a cheap price. Again, I got mine for under $200 at Best Buy. Can't remember if it was on sale or not, however, it was pretty cheap compared to others I've seen.

Thanks guys for all your replys.
All in all the upgrade is like Bishops said due to the fact we just moved into a new place and we want to free up as much room as possible. The "heaters" that we have now are just way to bulky to fit on our desk safely. Plus it is just time to modernize.

While we are talking about flat screen monitors... what is the best way to clean the screen? The kids do a good job of sticking their fingers on it.

it appears that almost every manufacturer of TFT screens has their own, different, recommended method of cleaning!
All agree that care must be taken not to put pressure on the screen however. And that use of abrasives like paper towels should be avoided and that liquids should not be applied directly to the screen.
I think just about everyone recommends against the use of ammonia-based cleaners and solvents such as acetone. I've seen suggestions for using a soft, lint-free cloth slightly moistened with just water, or diluted vinegar.
In the end it's best to check in the screen's manual for cleaning instructions or on the manufacturer's web site.
Oh, and don't use the word modernize in front of my monitor. It's sensitive.
/hugs monitor and drifts off

I had to adjust my UI when I logged in because all the screens were huge.
We did come out pretty good though and it was fun watching all 6 people behind the counter trying to make sure we had everything we needed. They were kissing our butts the whole time.
