Whenever I try to download the new patches, it seems to start off fine, decent speed, whatever. Then it just trickles down to basically not downloading at all. I'm PRETTY sure it's not an internet issue, because I can surf the web at the same time, but having to cancel out of the download, and reboot the updater takes forever. Anyone have any idea what it may be?

Not really.
The behavior sounds like what can happen with Torrents, everything goes smooth as long as there's enough peers to leech from, then suddenly you're farthest ahead and there's only your as peer and the seeder. if the seeder (original source) is down or having bandwidth issues, you're down to a crawl.
Not sure though if AoC uses torrent for patches.

This was happening to me when I first installed the game i just had to keep restarting the updater and then it finally stopped trickling down and stayed steady at about 200 KB/s which is slow as shit for me but I just went to sleep and when I got up in the morning it was done and ready to play, so just go do something else and see if it is done later on.

The problem is that it literally drops all the way down to not downloading at all, so even if I let it sit all weekend, it still wouldn't be making any progress. Lame

Yea, it was doing that to me too, you just gotta let it sit for a little while and if it drops down restart the updater if it stays at a hella slow speed then just let it keep going.
