RE: Your thoughts now!

I have really mixed feelings about WAR. I love MMOs, as they give you the best chance to customize your characters and play styles. However, they always end up simple grind-fests.

But, the real problem I have so far with WAR is the look. Is it just me? The game looks dirty and gritty, the models stiff and simplistic, the armor and environments overly elaborate. I cant imagine feeling immersed in the game. Maybe beta just looks bad. The character faces are terrible, and the textures are either bland and boring, or so massively ornate it is silly. Everything is spikes and scars and slashes and venom.

I want a game that looks good, that has cool models, and neat looking equipment. I just think WAR has gone way way way too far. If you look at the screenshots, and concept art, every single class seems to be swamped with belts and buckles and sashes and spikes and claws and spines and points and huge weapons and huge armor plates and and and and and..... I dont want 100% realism, but I would like to think that my character could take a step without impaling himself on his belt buckle.

Maybe it is just me..... (sigh)

I currently play city of villains. the level of character customization is way beyond what you get in any other game. And, while it is all beautiful, it is also at least somewhat functional. WAR looks like some 14 year old boy's attempt at making a good looking game. Spastic and over the top, with a little ADHD mixed in.

That is my thought. The game may be fun, but at the moment, from the looks of the shots and concept art, I just cant seem to get excited.

I understand what you mean, it does seem over the top characters and the enviroment is crammed full of stuff, but the gameplay by the looks of it outweighs any doubts in my mind.

RE: Your thoughts now!

That is what I hope. And, today I watched a beta video, and it looked like they toned it way down. Maybe all the stuff they show on the website is just high end uber epic stuff, not every day equipment and environments.

The faces still look bad, but maybe beta has low rez graphics, and the release will look better :)

If game-play is good, it will make up for any graphical shortcomings. Well, some anyway!

RE: Your thoughts now!

Well, WAR will not have the same amount of character customization as CoH/V has, I can tell you. Very few games will.
Counter-side to that though is that if you look closely to high quality vids you can see faces having actual expressions, changing ones. Like EverQuest-II has. So you have a "combat face" and a normal face at the minimum. Beats the dressing doll look of those CoV textures.

I can understand the "too spikey" argument as well. I don't mind as much. The character concept pictures are over the top, they're supposed to be actually. Don't expect to see carbon copies of those in game. Where there's 5 different spikes in a concept picture, those get divied up to 5 different armor sets following that look.

I'm a teensy bit worried about the games' looks as well though. As I understand it Closed Beta is focusing primarily on gameplay, and not showing all the art assets. Additionally I believe Mythic to be running Technical Tests separately. At some point those will come closer together, probably around an Open beta time.

But... With WAR taking a page from Blizzard's axim of well-copied is better than poorly thought up, is going for as low system specs as possible and a toony art-look that helps with keeping specs low. This means we won't see the same graphical g(al)ore as in games like Vanguard, Huxley or Age of Conan.

RE: Your thoughts now!

Also, they wanted WAR to be gritty, they wanted to fill in the gap of the less gritty MMO's, e.g. WOW has cartoony graphics and no blood etc. Age of Conan has just burst onto the scene now full of gore, it did entice me at the beginning, but now ive gotten swiftly bored of looking at the same old repetitive finishers etc. seems a bit to grindy to me aswell.

Hopefully War will be as epic as its being made out to be! only time will tell!
