sorry, this is a topic created in response to Lani's comments about beer, but figured it was too off-topic to put in Wyat's contest thread ;) any insight into the world of beer is greatly appreciated.
Beer Talk i'd heard some talk about holland's / dutch beer and feel as a canadian i need to comment about beer being that it's basically a mainstay part of my diet... most branded beer is complete crap compared to local micro-breweries. the micro brews cost less as they aren't imported 4000 miles and taste better too, mostly based on freshness but also the water used. though once beer is brewed any impurities in the water are no longer there (that's why if you're unsure of a countries water, just drink the beer) if it's funk-water the beer is still going to have a funny smell and might have a bit of an off-taste to it ie: Corona tends to smell skunky so a lemon or lime is used to take that smell away. (if you want the Corona taste but don't want to risk getting sprayed in the eye when you cut up a lime, try Brahma from Brazil.)
anyway, i tend to support local like Paddock Wood, Big Rock, and Great Western, the latter has one heaps of awards in europe and north america and is brewed right here in my home town. though if there's a promo one say, stella artois and it comes with a free set of beer mugs, then i'll bug the stella ;)
my beer sampling has pretty much been from every place on earth and Zhujiang beer from China isn't bad (it's 6.2%) so it gets you ripped quicker and is dirt cheap.
here are some beers that i can say in my mind are piss-water:
Coor's Light, actually, any light beer, but especially Coor's, that really is taking a silver bullet for the team...lol.
Labbatt's = CRAP!
Pabst, Black Label, Old Millwakee, OV, Boheimian (B'oH) Brewhouse, and finally Foster's.
those are beers that i will avoid at any cost and no matter how much people say to use Clamato in them to make it better it's still not good!
anyway, that's beer talk, post your favs and most disliked if you want, heck, if you ever travel at least you might know what to try and what not to!

Guinness is nice for a day after work. Nice dark beers, mmm.
An excellent imported beer is Grimbergen. It's a Belgian ale, and it is utterly delicious!

Ty for the suggested Grimbergen will need to see if we can get that here! the wife and i actually are into ale and like guinness quite a bit.
Kilkenny is pretty decent too. =)

Dutch beer is pretty good actually. Try Grolsch or Hertog Jan for instance.
I also like Murphy's Irish Red.

I rarely go out to drink...having a young kid and all. I prefer to brew my own. Only takes about 1/2 day and by far better than any beer I have tasted in the states. Portland Oregon has 33-35 breweries just with in the city limits. So for any beer drinkers that gets the chance to go the trip will be worth it.

I don't like the taste of any beers.
The real ale "Moonshine" is ok though.

ED, what a great topic. I mean, I'm a huge beer connoisseur! I agree with your statement about micro-brewed beer being of high quality. We have a local micro-brewery in Edmonton called Alley Kat - it's worth checking out sometime. They make some pretty funky and innovative beers. They have a coffee porter that is pretty amazing.
I have to admit, though, that one of my all-time favourite beers is Newcastle Brown Ale. It's the one that got me hooked on darker beers.
I've also delved into the art of home-brewing, as Guardian has. I've had many more failures than successes, though.
And.. knowing that ED has just finished one of the biggest days of his life so far... we actually made our own beer (and wine) to be served at our wedding.
Great topic ED. Hopefully people will continue to enlighten us on beer that we need to try!

I got to agree with you ED. As far as American Beer goes there is only 2 I like. Budwieser of course tops the list, and Sam Adams isn't bad. After that I can't really stand to much. However there is a resturant on the other side of town that micro brews thier own beer, and they server over 100 kinds. So we are going to get over there soon and sample some.
The best beer I ever enjoyed was Molson Golden on tap at Jason's in Windsor Canada. When i lived in Detroit, and was still under 21, hoping over to Windsor for a weekend of drinking and titty bars was a blast. Maybe it was the titties that made me enjoy the beer so much, I don't know. LOL
Anyhow, thanks for the insight on the brew-ha-has
BTW, In college our fraternity was called Tappa Kegga Brew

Although I'm still a novice in the Beer business, my preferables are:
1) Hoegaarden: my personal favorite
2) Blond/Dark Leffe: only tasted the Blond so far and was actually quite good, yeah
3) Kriek: if you want a either a bitter or sweet light 'beer' this one is very good. Is mostly drank by younger persons.

Hmm Belgian beer :D
Just the plain old Stella Artois is good as just 'a beer' (een pint in 't vlaams)
Then we have:
Blond/Dark Grimbergen: Utterly delicious, has some vanilla hint in it but is still strong flavored. To be drank calmly,so you can enjoy it.
Blond/dark Leffe: This beer looks a bit like the Grimbergen, but is even a bit better in my opinion. The taste is "fuller" than Grimbergen, it's heavier and you can drink it even slower. (Although I tend to be a fast drinker)
Duvel: Duvel is Flemish for Devil, and that isn't without reason. This beer is dangerous =p It's so tasty you can't get enough. But! It's a very strong beer with a high carbondioxide level, so it makes you drunk pretty fast. Still delicious, the taste is somewhere between a normal pint and a leffe.
I could go on for ages, but I have to study ;)
Beer ya later =p

glad you liked it beano, next time i'm in edmonton, shouldn't be more than a few weeks, i'll definately be trying that Alley Cat, porter's are really good!
out of american beers Budweiser is my favorite, though on the label it says "Brewed in Canada" but hey! whatev.
i do like going over to AB to stock up as the pricing isn't Gov't regulated so the SuperStore Liquor store and some private stores have some pretty good buys sometimes.
same with Rev, glad you like the topic =)

ED... there's a really great liquor store called the "Chateau Louis Liquor Store." If I'm right, it's on Kingsway Avenue and about 116th ST or so. AWESOME selection of beer. It's out near the Airport in the middle of town.

I just turned 21 and therefore legal (in America) but have been drinking for awhile...on my birthday I bought something called Dragon's Milk just for the hell of it. It wasn't that great...
But my roomates and I have a kegerator and love it...we typically have something domestic because imported or micro brew kegs are way too expensive, Budweiser is our beer of choice.
Otherwise I like some darker beers like Guinness, others I like are Blue Moon, Amber Bach, and a newly discovered favorite called Longboard...its from Hawaii :O

Duvel is indeed devellish; especially on a hot summers day sitting outside in the sun... but there is one that is worse... I think it's even from the same brewery: gulden draak (golden dragon). it has 12% alcohol in it >.< It is a very nice tasty dark ale though; really to be enjoyed drinking slowly (not like i once did; drinking a 0,75l bottle in 30 mins...) on a summers evening.
As for beers i like... there arent many i dislike; but my favorites are mostly dark ales and triple ales (Leffe tripple for instance is weally weally nice). For hot summer's days i prefer pale ales like hoegaarden (belgian), wieckse witte (dutch), celice (belgian) or Korenwolf (dutch).

im 15 i know, but i have enough beer experience :P
heineken really really tastes bad. but palm, hoegaarden(wich is not regular beer), hertog jan taste pretty good.
even though i really depends in what mood you are, because i really cant stand pure beer in winter, i always mix it up with 7up or coke or something, but in the hot summer, a nice 'wiekse witte' or 'hoegaarden' can be the best drink ever. so it really depends on mood/weather.

Me. I prefer spirits.
Jagermeister+Red bull, Vodka + coke, Jack Daniel's and coke.
Or
Apple Sourz/Mickey Finn, Red Aftershock, sometimes Tequila, sometimes Absinthe.

Mmmmmmm, beer.
At home I tend to drink Alexander Keith's India Pale Ale most often. When I went to Amsterdam last year I tried a beer that I really enjoyed. It was called KWAK . I loved the taste, and the glass it is served in was fun too. It is difficult and costly to get here in Canada though, what a shame.
