Before i defrag my computer... what does defragging do?

when you defragment your computer it does exactly that, it takes all the fragments and scattered files and puts them back where they belong. it can increase the speed of your computer because with the files back in order, it takes less time to search for and access them.
ps:
i may not be 100% correct but i think that is the general idea. i'll let fourmite cover the rest. ^^

to put in a more technical sense. it basically moves the data stored on your hard drive to the outer edge of the platters where rotation speed is faster.
